does she have any other good songs? i've liked "habits" from the beginning but find it difficult to be v interested in her. i have to rmde at some of those track titles especially "not on drugs" (which seems to actually be a single??)

dyl, Thursday, 2 October 2014 05:03 (two years ago) Permalink

Love Ballad and Paradise are both very good. Neither of them appear to be on the album, though.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 2 October 2014 06:56 (two years ago) Permalink

This checks all the boxes of things I typically like, but enh...I dunno. Even "Habits," the song everyone seems to gravitate toward, goes in one ear and out the other.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 October 2014 06:58 (two years ago) Permalink

i think i have had the lyrics "High all the time. To keep you off my mind. Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh." in my head for over a month now. it won't go away, don't mind though.

this is pretty underrated imo

or it isn't

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 November 2014 20:52 (two years ago) Permalink

I will rep for pretty much the first half of the album at least as sharp, cynical swedepop with earworm hooks. Tove's voice isn't overly showy but it's entirely serviceable and fits the material nicely.

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 November 2014 20:55 (two years ago) Permalink

I still feel the same as I did upthread. Like, this is custom-made for my usual taste, but something about it just doesn't strike me. Don't know what it is or why.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 14 November 2014 20:58 (two years ago) Permalink

my gun / like em young / moments / got love / thousand miles
are legit high points

So beautiful cow (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 November 2014 21:05 (two years ago) Permalink

i shd check this out maybe. habits has been soundtracking my life for a a few months now

johnny crunch, Friday, 14 November 2014 21:24 (two years ago) Permalink

i first heard habits a year & a half ago, listened to it obsessively then. when the album finally dropped was kinda like "oh, she made a record finally." only listened once and wasn't like, bowled over by the whole album but deserves another shake

Been enjoying this the last few weeks although for some strange reason it's not getting officially released over here (UK) until 2015

groovypanda, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:19 (two years ago) Permalink

ilm is sleeping on this album, like forksclovetofu has said, there are some serious nuggets on this record. it does take awhile to get into it but the rewards are amazing, will be on my list for ILM's annual countdown.

Yeah, album is surprisingly solid.

Really like this album. For me it joins Cher Lloyd and Ronika as one of this year's great and underrated pop albums.

yeah i really dislike that song. "Talking Body" is great though.

Am I the only one who finds the line "we fuck for life" to be simultaneously nonsensical, gratuitous and obnoxious? Even as a second language thing it's just embarrassingly bad.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 19 August 2016 01:27 (one year ago) Permalink

i thought it was a somewhat disarming but ultimately great line. do love that song tho, by far the best thing she has done.

dyl, Friday, 19 August 2016 16:56 (one year ago) Permalink

xp I remember watching a video interview where she explained the process of writing that song and it was originally "we love for life" but she thought that was too extreme

art baengels (monotony), Friday, 19 August 2016 22:41 (one year ago) Permalink

That's the version I listen to as the kids like the song.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 23 August 2016 19:59 (one year ago) Permalink

p sure the speaker of Not On Drugs is actually on drugs, which is part of what makes it a good song.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Tuesday, 23 August 2016 21:36 (one year ago) Permalink

Yes because "we fuck for life"is just so much less extreme.

we fuck for SPARTAAAAA!

mh 😏, Thursday, 25 August 2016 02:01 (one year ago) Permalink

yeah it is a weird line -- does it mean marriage? Lifetime fuck buddy privileges? Strange thing to say in a song that's mostly just about lust too.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Thursday, 25 August 2016 03:50 (one year ago) Permalink

Talking Body came on when I was in the gym today and it sounded weirdly generic to me -- the way her voice is produced in particular. Also, the line is changed to "love for life" in the radio version.

spotify's image for her tour is kinda porny and i'm getting the impression that's how she's being marketed/is self marketing now?

i like that song about staying high all the time

Treeship, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 03:23 (nine months ago) Permalink

i made a terrible poll about it

Treeship, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 03:23 (nine months ago) Permalink

Her voice seems to have lost all its urgency and energy. There's some great songs here - "True Disaster" especially - but her delivery makes everything seem so monochromatic. It made me think of the Liz Phair self-titled album: it's meant to be pop and it's meant to be sexually empowered and feminist, but it doesn't quite come off.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 08:42 (nine months ago) Permalink

and I was really sad because the debut was one of my favourites of recent years.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 08:42 (nine months ago) Permalink

My kids were also sad as they really liked the first album and there's maybe two on this one that they can listen to #pottymouth

groovypanda, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 11:04 (nine months ago) Permalink

I mean, the whole point is that there's no urgency and energy. everything sounds monochromatic because it's portraying everything *feeling* monochromatic, but fortunately the current version of What Max Martin Sounds Like works pretty well alongside that, in a dead-eyed '80s way (there are a lot of similarities, sonically and otherwise, to the weeknd album)

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Wednesday, 30 November 2016 15:31 (nine months ago) Permalink

I totally get what she's going for! And I really respect that, at the point in her career where she could have really blown up, she chose to make this album and send the message it does. But I wish there was a way that the things I like about the first album - eg the desperation of Habits, the blissful cravings in Not On Drugs - could exist within this.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 November 2016 18:56 (nine months ago) Permalink

i love this album, it speaks to me

josh, Thursday, 1 December 2016 20:12 (nine months ago) Permalink

tove lo's lyrics are hilarious, she always sounds like she just stepped off the plane from sweden, learned some american slang and wants to awkwardly shoehorn "feels" and "zero fucks" into her lyrics
