Does this have to be a picture thread?

www.perry.como (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:49 (nine years ago) link

Environmental/field recording ambient:
http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/2828/cover_5435211212010.jpg
(Biosphere - Substrata)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:51 (nine years ago) link

No, you can list them without the pics, I'd just thought it'd be fun to include the covers, since most people recognize them immediately.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:52 (nine years ago) link

Also, don't rock fans listen to loads of music other than rock on the whole?

www.perry.como (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:52 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, that's why these are probably the only albums they own from their respective genres.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:53 (nine years ago) link

70s Soul.

Marvin Gaye : What's Going On

(and isn't this just a simple case of going over the multitude of mojo/q '100 best albums' list, and removing all the rock stuff ?)

mark e, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:54 (nine years ago) link

Drum & bass:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41uzpfzbAqL.jpg
(Goldie - Timeless)

Tuomas, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 08:55 (nine years ago) link

the drum'n'bass pick would be new forms over timeless, but yeah as mark e says this strikes me as a bit conceited and strawman-y, not to mention based on archetypes that died out some time in the last decade. would almost be tempted to start an opposing thread about the rock albums non-rock fans listen to, but i doubt it would be very interesting.

www.perry.como (dog latin), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 09:02 (nine years ago) link

Lol, is that Louvin' Brothers album really a genuine country classic? I've only come across it in various "goofiest album covers ever" lists.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 09:33 (nine years ago) link

It's a 'hipster's choice' Country Gospel pick.

I Don't Wanna Ice Bucket With You (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 09:41 (nine years ago) link

It's both, I think. The Louvin Brothers were pretty special IMO (and not just MO) but that cover seems to have elevated that LP to a different level of fame.

Tim, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 10:02 (nine years ago) link

Would fans of The Chronic like Biosphere? Is there a point to this dumb thread?

xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 10:17 (nine years ago) link

Does Tuomas own a token "rock" album?

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 16:58 (nine years ago) link

he owns every Wigwam album.

the point is to recommend unrepentant rockists like me new records to listen to, right? i never heard of goldie or biosphere. i'd say stuff like the orb, hall and oates, are non-rock albums with crossover appeal to a rock audience. and i mean, there's a lot of stuff that crosses over so much it's basically thought of as rock- "the freewheelin' bob dylan" or the beastie boys or whatever.

rushomancy, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

i don't know how much i like threads that are all "let's all speculate about how this large and amorphously-defined group appreciates culture!"

i mean any "rock fan" who has louvin brothers, public enemy, red headed stranger, SAW vol 2., and a love supreme in their collections probably listens to a bunch of music. i mean, what are the rock albums in this hypothetical fan's collection? are they any less canonical? these are all just really famous albums that lots of people like

marcos, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 18:42 (nine years ago) link

the only classical records i sell to non-classical people in my store are satie records. the freaks, of course, will buy my stockhausen and reich and glass and all that, but as far as non-freak rock fans go, satie is king. and, you know, just the sad piano satie. nothing fancy. i kinda flip out if ANY rock or jazz fan buys a classical record. it's very very rare.

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

what is this lamest thread possible week?

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

it's the radiohead poll isn't it

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

it's always the radiohead poll

sʌxihɔːl (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

OTM but I'm really enjoying the idea that AC/DC fans typically rate Substrata as their token 'environmental/field recording ambient' album.

that was totally my token freaktronica record! i bought it. played it once. don't think i ever bought anything else from that era like that. i liked the videos.

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:46 (nine years ago) link

i bought that famous dj shadow record too. played it once. did well on ebay with both those records.

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link

i also did really well selling my vinyl copies of moon safari and the dr. octagon record. also played once. near mint! moon safari sounded cool on vinyl.

scott seward, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:50 (nine years ago) link

what is the point of this thread

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:50 (nine years ago) link

I'm somewhat insulted that ppl decided to troll this thread over my "curate yr own 2014 music festival" thread

stacked as fuck & imposing (DJP), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 20:52 (nine years ago) link

is that Louvin' Brothers album really a genuine country classic

this album is 100% solid fucking country gold, the Louvins are giants of the genre

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 21:03 (nine years ago) link

but I guess it is not the token country album typically rated by silly 90s techno fans

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 21:13 (nine years ago) link

I still wanna know Tuomas' sole rock album, if he has one. Appetite For Destruction? Bat Out of Hell? The Eagles Greatest Hits?

Lordi?

I would consider myself a(n indie) rock fan but my collection includes SAW2, A Love Supreme, Red Headed Stranger, Public Enemy, & Erik Satie. Now playing: Celtic Frost, Monotheist

taking sides: who should be first up against the wall - rock fans who have token albums of other genres vs fans of non-rock who dont like any rock albums

strychnine, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 22:31 (nine years ago) link

I actually bought the Anthology of American Folk Music for my dad one Christmas! You can still fart on him tho, lord knows I would

ODB's missing grammar (bernard snowy), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 22:39 (nine years ago) link

Anthology of American folk remains on our wall untouched by rockists or folkies.

mom, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 22:57 (nine years ago) link

i guess some of these are considered entryways into their genres and that's why you see them on college campuses? if you really want to do a siqq burn on hipsters tho make sure to include heart of the congos.

own 27 Moe Bandy records or else

rap steve (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 23:08 (nine years ago) link

I don't own any albums at all, just T-shirts w/performers depicted on them

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 23:11 (nine years ago) link

we should just retitle this thread awesome albums everyone should own

you are an asshole if this is the only country album in your collection. I bet you can't even name 3 Hank Williams songs.
