counterpoint: Chief Keef is some bullshit

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Monday, 7 March 2016 16:45 (eight years ago) link

i guess we'll have to agree to disagree

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 16:48 (eight years ago) link

man, think of all the time we could have saved over the years if we'd started from here

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Monday, 7 March 2016 16:50 (eight years ago) link

the old (meek) and new (Keef) guard of what we broadly call street rap.

micro brewbio (crüt), Monday, 7 March 2016 17:08 (eight years ago) link

Deej, I plead guilty to underestimating Keef for a while but that still doesn't mean twitter dude and certain other guys (you) aren't overestimating his talents and output, not to mention Meek's. At Keef's best, he's good and interesting, and he's good and interesting more often than you would think. But there's a lot of bullshit in between. And a best of YT or Future would be way better than a best of Keef.

I will never plead guilty to propping up lesser talented people "in his absence" though. Lil Uzi Vert is cool enough but a lesser talent, and I never pretended otherwise.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 7 March 2016 17:56 (eight years ago) link

overestimating relative to what? you deciding to completely check out of his catalog in 2013?

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:05 (eight years ago) link

i personally like more keef songs than thug or future ones, or i feel more strongly about the best keef songs than i do the best future songs, but i realize that's not the dominant opinion. It's still a legitimate one

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:06 (eight years ago) link

(that lots of rap fans also agree with & isnt nearly as isolated an opinion as you seem to think)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:07 (eight years ago) link

the idea that hes some sort of soulja boy /lil b type figure has been so drastically overstated by people too lazy to keep up w/ his music when its no less incoherent or inconsistent than young thug (IMO he's more consistent than thug but ymmv)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:11 (eight years ago) link

I like both Soulja Boy and Lil B.Soulja Boy's talent is mostly for copying others but Lil B' is an original whose influence stretches to Chance The Rapper who is arguably the best and most interesting artist of everyone out atm. So that kind of outweighs his great stretches of mixtape desert.

Keef's influence is obviously real but I'm not sure if anything great will come out of it or if he'll make another great song or mixtape/album. Sounds like he's treading water right now. And while his best songs are good and electrifying I'm having a hard time imagining why you'd prefer them to Future's or Thug's best. That's why I think you're overestimating him. That I lost interest in him for a while is regrettable but to me at least it's also about me not living in a Keef-centred universe. I imagine I will lose interest in him again soon unless he follows up with something new and great. He's just not THAT fascinating to me.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:37 (eight years ago) link

the leek 5 dropped last week and is really great, it might be better than any tape he put out last year. (i know it's not an official release but whatever)

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:24 (eight years ago) link

Keef's influence is obviously real but I'm not sure if anything great will come out of it or if he'll make another great song or mixtape/album.

"If he'll make another great song" GTFO he's had hits every year since he came out, just because you're ignoring them doesn't mean they don't exist. Never mind tapes—you mean like AlmightySo, BFTD2, AlmightyDP, Finally Rollin?

Sounds like he's treading water right now.

a lot of his recent stuff, like nobody 2, has been leaks of shit from 2 years earlier...thats totally his xanned out music from 2014...

And while his best songs are good and electrifying I'm having a hard time imagining why you'd prefer them to Future's or Thug's best. That's why I think you're overestimating him. That I lost interest in him for a while is regrettable but to me at least it's also about me not living in a Keef-centred universe.

i don't gaf what universe you're personally living in, i'm telling you that whether or not you are, rap music is living in a keef-centric universe and you're just behind

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:34 (eight years ago) link

hes one of the only artists in rap not treading water ffs. every project sounds different than the one before it

this song (video uploaded in 2015) has 31 million views with zero airplay

Keef either manages to make a truly great song or album again or he doesn't.

the above video was uploaded two or three weeks before this post where you said the exact same thing

this terrible song having 31 million views is doing more to convince me that the American public is capable of voting Donald Trump into the Oval Office than anything else I've encountered this political season

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:43 (eight years ago) link

it really is amazing how Chief Keef is now an experienced recording artist but his stuff consistently sounds stilted and incompetent and awful even compared to the general baseline of quality for regional gangsta rap

ODD FUTURE WOLFGANG VAN HALEN ON BASS (some dude), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:47 (eight years ago) link

i dont understand how someone raised on, like, the production sounds of the rza who champions swizz beats cant understand an aesthetic that doesnt play by formal "rules"

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:51 (eight years ago) link

i'm not really talking about the production, he just raps weird! i mean the most charitable thing i could say is that he's like E-40 in that you either totally appreciate the ways he sounds different from other rappers or you don't.

where is the gentler deej from a few posts back

tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Monday, 7 March 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

Earned it is cool enough but Faneto is the one song that made me believe Keef might still have som life in him. It qualifies as a "truly great song" to me in that it makes me want to jump around and its chorus is stuck in my head. Would be interesting to read a "milestones of keef's career" breakdown, preferably song by song, since he's the only one who's not treading water right now.

there's a chief keef beat on the new lil yachty tape http://www.datpiff.com/Lil-Yachty-Sailing-Team-Mixtape.771285.html

ANU (sisilafami), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 11:19 (eight years ago) link

curious if they bought that from DP cuz he co-prod that shit

seems like Keef is just managing detroit artists now & hasn't been rapping ... I'm really into this Rocaine joint, I like how he raps, all unpredictable (a little eazy e flow in there too)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2jL26USV2s

also did a project pat remake

It was an honest mistake dude, it used to be hi def's place. You remember hi def, right? You hate that guy.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 18:22 (eight years ago) link

we have a complicated relationship

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 19:09 (eight years ago) link

Who said it was an "honest mistake"?

God damn don't cross the high handed moralizing of ilx's extremely recently discovered taste for sanctimony

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 20:36 (eight years ago) link

i just came across it today searching for rap on youtube and thought it was a weird/dumb story that involved my home city

robbie ca$hflo (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 21:04 (eight years ago) link

that was more about joe stork's response & the finger wagging when it was linked earlier upthread

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 21:06 (eight years ago) link

I mean, how dare someone respond to someone's shitty behavior with sarcastic reference to how shitty it was?

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2016 21:12 (eight years ago) link

It was more a joke than anything else, and I don't actually think you condone Keef being an asshole, but are you really taking people to task for saying that this was a shitty thing to do?

JoeStork, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 21:15 (eight years ago) link

Or what djp said

JoeStork, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 21:16 (eight years ago) link

ok guys lets shut this down before he finds out where i live!!!!!!

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 28 March 2017 16:57 (seven years ago) link

yeah good to hear him on something radio-worthy-friendly. wow nice those two recs are both a+

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 28 March 2017 17:17 (seven years ago) link

is that a harpsichord on the reload beat?

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 28 March 2017 17:19 (seven years ago) link

i kinda prefer when he makes futuristic jams that become influential staples cf 'faneto' 'earned it' than when he makes obv radio records tbh

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 28 March 2017 17:44 (seven years ago) link

makes sense yeah I just think its cool for him to hop on something like that once in a while

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 28 March 2017 17:46 (seven years ago) link

i went to this hip hop party this weekend & kids still respond to faneto like its 'knuck if you buck' here

https://www.instagram.com/p/BSFRy8YDpZ2/
