Well it's good to be back in England and it's good to see all you again. Take it, dude!

Thanks to honorary Ramone Joan Jett for starting us off. (I think "Bad Reputation" is the best Ramones song that's not a Ramones song.)

We'll run through the side polls today, pick up with the tracks tomorrow.

First up: Favorite Ramones heroine.

This was an OPO vote, and I'm happy to report that the runaway winner, by a margin I didn't even bother to count, was P.J. Soles a.k.a. Riff Randall. There were a few votes for Sheena and Judy, but Riff is the embodiment of the Ramones ideal: naive, ingratiating, smarter than you think, prone to taking a chainsaw to her permanent record.

I actually have a personal story about P.J. Soles and the Ramones. I never met her, but when I was in elementary school, one of my best friends was her nephew. My friend's uncle was a session musician who recorded with Bob Dylan and T-Bone Burnett and other people, and he was married for a time to an aspiring actress -- whose big break was starring in a Roger Corman movie with the Ramones. So my friend and his older sister got to be big Ramones fans while P.J. was making "Rock n Roll High School."

I first heard the Ramones at their house, and I bought my first Ramones record ("Leave Home") on a record store trip in 8th grade with the same friend. The second rock concert I ever went to was with him to see the Ramones on their Subterranean Jungle tour. A few months later, when we were both in 9th grade, my friend was in a terrible car accident that left him in a coma for months and permanently, massively brain damaged ever after. He never recovered the ability to walk, talk or feed himself. For years afterward, I had dreams where he'd appear completely normal like he'd just returned from wherever he was, and we'd talk about what had happened in the world since his accident (including any new Ramones records). After about 10 years I stopped having those dreams, but for me the Ramones will always be bound up with my memory of him.

So anyway. Rock n roll, Riff.

I have to go do stuff for a while, so I'll let the board wake up and report back in a bit with the covers side poll.

sorry for the non-participation, I didn't vote in the subpolls. I can't freaking stand the Who, but it's easy to see how they influenced the Ramones. The one song that I've always thought was very Who-ish was "Don't Come Close", which sounds remarkably like "Let My Love Open the Door" to me. But I just checked and LMLOTD came out two years after Don't Come Close, so I guess the influence went the other way around as well?

Also, that Rock and Roll High School Clip is great! Dee-Dee looks so happy there in the shower.

Dee Dee totally seems like a guy you might find happily playing bass in your shower.

This song is such a natural that it's hard to believe Tom Waits didn't have them in mind.

I like "Time Has Come Today" -- partly because it's such an unlikely song for them. Love Joey's singing on it. And it has a goofy video. (For a band with basically zero hits, they made a lot of videos.)

Yep. He's a good, powerful drummer. I understand why a lot of people prefer Tommy's spartan aesthetic, but Marky definitely gave them a fuller sound.

I understand the sentiment for Tommy given the timing of the poll, and probably some people knocked him down a notch for his politics, but imo 4th place for Johnny is not really fair.

My favorite Ramone is Marky solely because of Dust. Guy was/is a great drummer.

Ok, since we're down to the last two, I think that although Dee Dee is my favorite songwriter of the Ramones, I could see him flourishing in other bands, had the Ramones never existed, whereas Joey Ramone wouldn't have made sense in any other context but the Ramones and is the "Ramonesiest".

I don't know, wasn't Joey in some glam band before the Ramones? But yeah, one thing the documentary really showed was that they were mostly very dysfunctional people, sort of amazing they formed such a solid unit and held it together for so long.

So, for the debut only:
ONE song with three chords
Six Songs with four chords
Four Songs with five chords
Two songs with six chords
One song with seven chords

So, in the debut, they used 4.7 ((3 + 6 * 4 + 4 * 5 + 2 * 6 + 7)/ 14 = 4.7) chords for each song, round it up, and they used FIVE CHORDS per song.

That said, I think writing a good song with just three chords is hard as hell. With four, well, is not as hard, but it ain't easy.

That will be useful if I ever have to figure out again what songs are within my capability; just eliminate all the ones with a #.

a fellow "Mental Hell" voter!

Mental Hell is one of my favorites of their 80s work. I tried to have one off of every album, but Halfway To Sanity was as far as I could get in their later work (I Wanna Live)-though I think Acid Eaters is great.

I had Howling At The Moon #2 as well how's life.

Yeah I hit every album thru Sanity. Could've gone for Pet Srmatary too. For a band with such an obvious early peak, they kept things interesting for a long time.

Oxfam record hunting yesterday, managed to find a great copy of "Its Alive" 2lp, and "Leave Home" a US pressing with "Carbona"

Alice, however, decided she wanted a copy of "Muddy Waters live at Newport"..
