livin in regret!

dc, Sunday, 20 March 2016 16:57 (eight years ago) link

two weeks pass...

her tour has been cancelled and looks like she is being made to re-record the album :(

art baengels (monotony), Thursday, 7 April 2016 07:28 (eight years ago) link

What the fucking fuck :(

boxedjoy, Thursday, 7 April 2016 10:48 (eight years ago) link

oh shit i totally did not read between the lines here!! I just assumed she'd gotten behind on the album, not that it was in the can and she's now being made to re-record it. That fucking blows.

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:28 (eight years ago) link

yeah, she said on facebook the album was finished but her label rejected it & is demanding new songs for it

ufo, Thursday, 7 April 2016 12:39 (eight years ago) link

goddamn she says she hasn't even seen the cover, either!

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 7 April 2016 13:46 (eight years ago) link

i always thought the existence of such a fully-formed, distinctive album as aquarius was something of a miracle for an r&b singer of tinashe's level and it seems we're all being made to pay for it. truly the New Cassie/Ciara

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:10 (eight years ago) link

label should just skip this part where they try in desperation to get her one more pop hit and just fast forward to the part where she makes her carly rae jepsen move as a pop star for indie rock fans

J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:12 (eight years ago) link

ha, Jordan is spot on.

I'm less bummed about this than the rest of the thread, though. As much as I want another Aquarius I want another "2 On," too.

Evan R, Thursday, 7 April 2016 16:12 (eight years ago) link

pretty sure Chris Brown is to blame for this.

oh man i am stoked for this

sexy dander (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 14 July 2016 13:37 (seven years ago) link

The new single sounds very Ciara Basic Instinct-esque. I don't know if this is the single to finally launch the album though.

http://popcrush.com/superlove-tinashe-new-song-single-joyride/

listening to this it occurred to me that aside from the 'popcorn' track and the closer from amethyst with the crazy guitars i don't have anything i immediately recall being crazy about by her from say aquarius, i'm just into immersion in the whole album as an experience, so what i'm really hoping for is that the commercial moves don't ruin that on the new one, if it's not going to result in super duper pop smashes.

j., Friday, 15 July 2016 08:05 (seven years ago) link

Good to hear The-Dream back on his game. Yeah I dunno how this squares with the persona she's carved out for herself, but it's light and fun and summery. My guess is she just tucks this at the back of the album (possibly as a bonus track if it bombs)

Evan R, Friday, 15 July 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link

I don't think it will bomb - at least not any more than any of the other songs she's been trying to push. Feels both weird and good to have a Terius & Tricky song pushing for the charts again though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 15 July 2016 14:47 (seven years ago) link

i didn't expect tinashe to do a bass track :D

(it will bomb but who cares)

dyl, Friday, 15 July 2016 17:33 (seven years ago) link

Guess it was overdue for someone to capitalize on the My Boo drum pattern

Spottie, Friday, 15 July 2016 18:13 (seven years ago) link

This sounds like something Rihanna passed on after "Super Bass" hit.

I think throwback is a pretty bad look for her. Aquarius worked in part b/c it paired her with hyper-contemporary collaborators (Boi-1da, Dahi, Mike Will, Mustard, Cashmere Cat), and she even when she was running with the zeitgeist she did something new with it. She loses some of her appeal when she's working with hand-me-downs from old industry vets.

Evan R, Friday, 15 July 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

I like this, but I hope it is just a bonus track. Like everyone else mentioned, her first album and mixtapes had great texture to them sound wise. Shame if the album becomes a "throw everything on the wall and hope it sticks" hybrid r&b/pop album.

not THE new album, just a new mixtape, but still

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 4 November 2016 15:30 (seven years ago) link

i wonder if this is the album she wanted to release before her label made her fuck it all up?

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 4 November 2016 15:30 (seven years ago) link

I haven't listened to this yet and I am not well-versed in the mixtape world but what would make this not an album?

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 4 November 2016 15:37 (seven years ago) link

there is no way this is not the original album

boxedjoy, Friday, 4 November 2016 15:40 (seven years ago) link

it's not if you say it's not, stevie

j., Friday, 4 November 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

manifestation, sigh

j., Friday, 4 November 2016 15:49 (seven years ago) link

ya I just read an article on Noisey that was basically like "a mixtape is an album that people release themselves and aren't trying to market like a proper label release"

i assume this to be all the R&B tracks she recorded during the JOYRIDE sessions, and her and the label settled releasing them as a ~mixtape~ so her proper album can be more of a pop record (where we'll probably find "superlove" and, more importantly, "player," hopefully without chris brown)

mostly empoweringly drab mood music with the unfortunate jojo quality of making you sympathise with the execs somewhat

hard to think of many capable artistes surviving being this polarized, in fairness

flickers in the last third; 'spacetime' is v cool on that reliable astral b sure tip; 'touch pass' is superb, the perfect elusive tinashe poise

r|t|c, Friday, 4 November 2016 18:45 (seven years ago) link

'touch pass' is actually probably p regulation cassie on its own but context gives it ballast

always-underrated amethyst ep now only getting better as artistic statement in retrospect

r|t|c, Friday, 4 November 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

not underrated by me!!!

low end production, esp in bass drum, seems a little itunes-cruddy on this, but oh well

i like all the ones where she sounds like she is sad and sits in her room

j., Friday, 4 November 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

i def like a lot of this but it feels really like a hodge podge of more introspective/odd stuff with attempts to be commercial r&b

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 November 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link

this mixtape is very excellent

Fluffy Saint-Bernard (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 5 November 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link

i love "touch pass" and "ghetto boy" but it felt like i had to sift through a lot of shapelessness to get there

i apologise for lowering the tone with str8 facts my guy

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:22 (seven years ago) link

the thing is that this case makes a pretty clear case for why it was shelved as an album but it's not like the alternative of turning her into 2006-era ciara is working artistically or commercially either so like....

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

this tape**

J0rdan S., Saturday, 5 November 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

i think she prob needs to break up w/ her label and skip to the part where she's the next carly rae jepsen. indie audiences like fka twigs and dev hynes.
