when i played the the dude,his manager/caretaker seemed to genuely respect and care for him, and the crowd at the show seemed to not be the slightest cruel,but i dont know,maybe that was my perception.im not denying that theres a certain level of explotation on wesley,but if he wasnt doing music,he probably would of remained homeless for his entire life.when its all said and done,i think that doing music did a lot more good than harm for the man.

I mean the sentiments on this thread don't seem any more or less condescending than on any other RIP, with the exception of a handful of posters who think that to acknowledge the mentally ill at all it inevitably involves condescension (see also: indie rock's attitude toward black culture - 'we don't wanna be disrespectful so it's best to just not engage at all')

Just saw my friend, the one who'd made the documentary on Wesley Willis. He sad he last spoke to him three weeks ago, on the phone, and though Willis usually wasn't very good at the phone thing, this time he was totally lucid and seemed really happy.
