do you think it's really careful quality control, or just genius that makes like every verse so quotable?

im writing about this issue right now -- i break it down to an extent like, you know how he'll repeat certain lyrical themes once in awhile ... like you'll catch him biting himself -- cuz i think he'll go in the booth & just record for hours, but he's created basically this really enormous 'vocabulary' of lyrical concepts & ideas & basically he just sorta rearranges them on the fly when hes recording a verse ... so it explains how it sounds simultaneously off the top of the dome yet super original (& why a shitty gucci verse, or a generic one anyway, is just like him sorta riffing & not really digging into his own internal library or whatever)

like "higher than a --" is one idea, then hes got a bunch of rotating ones, higher than an eagle hes used a few timse (w/ difft modifiers to keep em fresh -- higher than an eagle on california reefer), higher than an owl, higher than a pelican, then once yr in that groove where u hear him just naming bird names he'll be like "higher than a mountain lion" or flip it off the animal thing entirely (i cant think of an example offhand with "higher" but one of my favorites is about how his car doesn't have a top -- "panoramic roof clearer than a cup of water" is just an evocative ((in a small bore way, not meaning to be on some "gorgeous is a big word!" shit)) image straight up, as opposed to the more traditional (yet totally underrated) line he does like "Eazy E drop top, call the car roofless" (ok that is genius yasmellme)
