so the emusic version is what i got when i bought it on itunes MINUS the two one-hour mixes.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 07:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i also bought the 2-CD set today at the store ... figure the itunes money i spent was payback for all of the c2 remix mp3s i've downloaded from blogs.

lol

but good for you! and thanx for the answer. I will have to remember next month since I just blew my wad on french pop and black flag

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 07:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow(!!!) at all the unmixed tracks being available on Emusic.

matt2, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Comparing the iTunes release (all the digital releases have the same tracklisting), it's missing Cesaria Evora's "Angola" (substituting Psyche's "From Beyond," not on the CD) and "Relevee" on the first disc. The second disc has "Angel" and the live "At Les" added (again, not on the CD) and has the track order shuffled around a bit.

Vahid, you say Relevee is "chopped out" of the mix? Please tell me it doesn't just skip forward like a track was snipped out of the mixed CD...

Telephone thing, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

^^ actually all of those changes ARE on the 2-cd set!!

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:32 (sixteen years ago) link

^^ that's the release CD tracklisting. i guess verve wanted too much money for "angola"??

anyway no idea why revelee was chopped out of the mix for itunes but it's nothing that major, they just fade out at the end of "the melody" and that's it.

the "sessions remix" of "revelee" isn't actually that great IMO. i mean, the new beat is pretty stealth (the ticklish high hat rhythm!) and sort of crunk in a way (those in-the-red bass hits) but i think that it sounds a little rushed compared to the old version and loses a bit of the grandeur of the original.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i would've also liked to have seen "barbiturik blues" on there, one of his most underrated remixes. so dope.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

it's a shame that the "angola" remix is missing because that's the record that ushered in the most recent phase of cc's style of remixing. i may be off by a release or two, but that's the one where i remember him really changing up his rhythm programming and the sound of the percussion, moving towards his modern minimalist style that works so well on the vocal tracks.

i am happy that the paris live version of "at les" makes an appearance!

picked it up on tues, but haven't listened yet.

tricky, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i think of "angola" as being outside of his most recent style of remixing, but regardless it is one of his best. i cant even count how many times i've banged that bitch out, it always rocks the dancefloor.

pipecock, Thursday, 28 February 2008 23:50 (sixteen years ago) link

you are right; it is outside of his recent style. i forgot that it's already been five years since it came out! i think i just associate it with when he stepped back into heavy remixing/dj-ing mode after the innerzone orchestra stuff.

tricky, Friday, 29 February 2008 01:50 (sixteen years ago) link

"the new beat is pretty stealth (the ticklish high hat rhythm!)"

this! it makes it so much more propulsive and funky. and i never noticed how similar the "revelee" remix was to the paperclip people tracks.

tricky, Friday, 29 February 2008 03:41 (sixteen years ago) link

juno have also put out two unreleased versions of the faze action remix - one's on 'sessions' and the other is different again.

haitch, Monday, 3 March 2008 01:06 (sixteen years ago) link

what is the difference between each of the versions?

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 3 March 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

oh god the digital version of sessions is over THREE HOURS LONG

another one from that timeperiod (that REALLY sounds like a Paperclip People jam) that has been all but forgotten is this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/197570

not that i dislike his recent mixes, but "angola" and "la mer est grande" are ridiculous. also not comped but awesome is his Hugh Masekela rmx:

pipecock, Monday, 3 March 2008 02:47 (sixteen years ago) link

what is the difference between each of the versions?
seems to arrange the elements differently rather than radically re-do anything. (samples.)

haitch, Monday, 3 March 2008 03:13 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah "angola" is a bomb record. i have not heard those other two. thanks for the tips!

Morgan Geist has a new album called Nocebo and, ridiculously, we are still
working out an exact release date for it. But we have some good news: we
just received some incredible remix action from Carl Craig on the first
single, fittingly entitled Detroit and featuring the man Jeremy Greenspan of
Junior Boys on vocals! More news on this soon, and sorry to keep you
waiting on it! Looks like the album will be out first thing in the fall,
but maybe we will let the single slip out a bit sooner...

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 01:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Futurelovetheme is a fucking revelation. More Landcruising-style goodness please CC.

jng, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 02:19 (sixteen years ago) link

can actually answer qn about the new 'in the trees' mixes now - one is like an epic re-edit, longer intro, big beatless breakdown with the string section. the other one basically takes out all the recognisably 'faze action' bits like the strings and reduces it to more of a dj tool.

where's this info from? google revealed nothing.

Anyone know when Futurelovetheme originally came out or if it's slated for a future release? (couldn't find anything on discogs aside from it appearing on some French film soundtrack)

Kaliova, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 10:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the soundtrack to Vexille (Japanese, not French) is the only place it has been released.

braveclub, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 10:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, I believe braveclub is correct and I'm still confounded as to how it slipped through relatively unnoticed at the time of it's release. It is quite nice and Landcruising-y.

matt2, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:23 (sixteen years ago) link

none of my favourite Craig tracks and remixes are on Sessions...which is a good enough reason for me to buy it i guess

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 15:32 (sixteen years ago) link

fwiw, Amazon has the Sessions version with all the single tracks and the two long mixes for cheaper than iTunes. Same omitted tracks, though.

mh, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

is his Can remix any good then?

braveclub, Thursday, 13 March 2008 09:50 (sixteen years ago) link

the one going round the shops atm is, apparently, mastered off a low-bitrate mp3.

could it be the one offa this??

haitch, Thursday, 13 March 2008 23:35 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

His remix of Alter Ego's 'Gary' is ridiculous, feels in equal parts big room 2004 electrohouse, Krautrock and that overblown nu-Carl Craig sound we're not really supposed to call space battle techno anymore. Tremendous though.

Matt DC, Saturday, 29 March 2008 18:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I've not heard that Matt DC, I'll have to check it out. Also, I'm glad to see that "Angel" (not the Caya Dub version) is finally more widely available with the download version of Sessions. To my knowledge, that version, with the spoken vocals that I love for their I-really-really-mean-this-but-this-is-some-serious-over-the-toppedness, was only available as the "(Japanese Mix)" on the Japan-only From The Vault: Planet E Classics Collection Vol. 1 (http://www.discogs.com/release/782269). It is definitely top five of this decade for me.

matt2, Monday, 31 March 2008 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

"Angel (Japanese Mix)" is amazing, yes.

Cesaria Evora - Angola (Remix) for a start, also
Throbbing Gristle - Hot on the Heels of Love (re-edit)

I am using your worlds, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I can see why his less danceable/more ambient stuff isn't on it (esp. with that re-recording of Landcruising from a few years back - altho you can still pogo to Science Fiction or whatever) but most of my fave CC stuff is like that (Televised Green Smoke et al)

otherwise, Paperclip Man, Jam The Box, the Ultramarine, Tori Amos, Coldcut, DJ Q and Hot Lizard remixes, that 'Angola' remix maybe, 'Think Twice', 4 MY PEEPZ...

blueski, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:15 (sixteen years ago) link

Angola is on it.

the mix really only showcases his remixes from this decade. there are some older tracks of his own on there but they're only there for context and to make the mix flow.

jed_, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:19 (sixteen years ago) link

So many options Titchy, whether it's the 69 comp, the Paperclip People album, the rerecorded Landcruising (better than the original), the DJ Kicks, More Songs About Food & Revolutionary Art or Sessions. Andy K always checks for the double mix-cd he did for React a few years ago, but I've never quite connected with it.

Tim F, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Angola wasn't on my version - but I know there were differences between the promo, retail and download releases.

Never heard the new version of Delia and Gavin for this reason, too.

why are people recommending things that aren't The Secret Tapes Of Dr. Eich?

El Tomboto, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:55 (sixteen years ago) link

I mean if you want a stone cold classic from one end to the other, that's your album. The filler on Dr. Eich comes only at the very beginning and the very end & it's consistently great throughout, the rest of his releases not so much
