Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, looks like the top 20-11 is much better than the top 10... Well, at least Nirvana didn't make it as high as people thought it would. I'm still hoping for a surprise victory for "Regulate".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Regulate and Windowlicker will chart very highly - they're still well-loved but not anywhere near as overplayed as yer Born Slippys or Smells Like Teen Spirits.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a fantastic list

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

660 unread answers and not into the top 10. COME ON

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the predictions game always bloats it

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine Stevem wearing a green visor and chewing on a cigar as he said that.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

GO EVERLONG

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I see that mentioned I think of the Pixies cover of 'Winterlong' and how much I like it.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

who is everlong by? don't think I know it

given all the "ILM wuvs soppy indie pop" comments upthread, what are the odds on Sixpence None The Richer making the top ten?!? i noticed it got a few mentions in the 'what did you vote for?' thread

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Everlong = Foo Fighters

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

WINDY AND CARL - "Antarctica"" (2332 points, 76 votes, 8 first place votes)

#4

SABRES OF PARADISE - "Wilmot" (3476 points, 82 votes, 17 first place votes)

(Not in this universe. Wait! Check the voting machines!)

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Kissed A Girl"!!! Hahahaha!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

20-11 is pretty great, in fact. I9-14 are all pretty classic. How could i have forgotten to vote for "Loser"?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This is that annoying question, but can someone tell me what is so good about 'Loser'?

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man bring on the last 10!!!

i've still got 11 that haven't shown up, by my best guess i'd say that no more than 3 of those will make it ("Soon", "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Lazarus") and probably only the first two actually will.

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

'Loser' is Beck's worst single

no way is 'Lazarus' gonna make it, wtf people

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

'Loser' is like, I dunno, the novelty single for people who think they're too smart for Afroman's 'Because I Got High'. It's so dreary!

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

in a tribe of chimpanzees i was a monkey. i love it. i don't know why.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i know - wishful thinking.
i just keep thinking of that part where the trumpets come crashing in with the drums and growling guitars and think "how could it NOT make the list???"

but then i could kinda think that about everything in my list (the part where delacy sings her first lines over the church organ/bass, the part where the first avh bline kicks in after the "sspppppiiinnnnnnnn spppppiiinnnnnnnn suuuugggggggggg-aaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh" timestretch thingy and all hell breaks loose, etc)

but most of all i just feel sad that NO ONE else voted for "Autobiography". you should all download it when i get the folder put together and shared. i guarantee you'll either love it or you hate music

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to steve m, obv

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i'm gutted about De'Lacy too - best house track of the 90s

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, Everlong isn't gonna make it. Despite the fact that it's the single greatest rock song of the decade. And you know why? BECAUSE ILM CREAMS OVER UTTERLY LIFELESS SHIT LIKE "SAY MY NAME" AND BELLE AND SEBASTIAN, THAT'S WHY.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

rock...?...UTTERLY LIFELESS SHIT

i think you may be onto something!

:-p

rentboy (rentboy), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to 'Everlong' because it was on my Michel Gondry DVD. It was one of those records that seemed to be made by people without soul, for ants. Why are people so scared of living? Stick on 'Sleep The Clock Around'. Open the windows. The future is bright.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i like 'loser', but it didn't make my votes. there was a time i thought beck was just grebt.

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always disliked Beck apart from a brief period when Loser still had some novelty value. The full length version of Lazarus is a grebt pop thing but there was no way it was going to go top ten.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAT IS THIS? A SONG FOR ANTS?

Freelance Zoolander (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What's this? A song for ANTS?

Zooalba (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

'Everlong' is great because to me it's the point where Grohl finally fessed up to loving Van Halen more than Sub Pop - all fun all the drivetime

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Unlike a lot of the songs in this poll, Loser sounds really limp ten years on.

The Foo Fighters placing above Nirvana would be some kind of victory against rockism, I feel (even if Everlong is the only song of there's a I really love).

I've no idea what's on the nominations list or what is going to make the Top 10. There isn't the unexploded bomb of another Belle and Sebastian song is there?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I might be wrong about the two D.I. songs, MiR, but if history has taught me one thing, it's to never underestimate the vote of the corny indie fuxx.
Corny indie fuxx in 90's poll = people who vote based on "moral values" in US elections

How do you feel about Corny Hip-Hop Fuxx? Because there seem to be a lot of those around.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still baffled as to why liking DI makes one a corny indie fuck nowadays.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

There isn't the unexploded bomb of another Belle and Sebastian song is there?

I suspect there may well be, sleeping at bus stops...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The best looking boys are taken
The best looking girls are staying inside..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps not. Judy and the Dream of Horses doesn't seem to have been nominated, so that pretty much counts out my prediction.

There isn't enough balance to this thread. Some of us should start to rant incoherently about how the list isn't indie ENOUGH.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you feel about Corny Hip-Hop Fuxx? Because there seem to be a lot of those around.

there are, aren't there? Their reaction when I say something like "Diamond Princess is a better album than Illmatic" is akin to the reaction of cornie indie fuxx when I say something like "Emma Bunton is better than Wilco". And they really hate Princess Superstar!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

HOW COULD THIS POLL HAVE IGNORED THE PASTELS WHY DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THE PASTELS YOU CRAZY BUNCH OF INDIE HATERS. FUCK YOU FOR HAVING YOUR OWN TASTES, FUCK YOU FOR VOTING FOR WHAT YOU LIKED AND WHAT'S ALL THIS AMERICAN SHIT DOING HERE?!?!?!?!?!?!

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, "from the Dr Dolittle soundtrack" says it all, really.
You are stupid.

So what you're saying is that you would have wanted ppl to vote for stuff *you* like, instead of stuff they like, so *your* tastes would have been better reflected on the list.
Uh-huh.

Um no not at all - actually I was suggesting the opposite, it was a little rhetorical trick, essentially I don't think ANY artist should have five songs in the top 100 singles of the decade, or if it is they certainly should have earned it. I LIKE st. etienne (in fact, I think I voted for "Like a Motorway") yet I think wu-tang's 5 best singles trump st. etiennes, but that point aside, I think its pretty clear where ILM's heart is in this matter.

wtf is Beck's "Loser" doing all the way up here?

(I'm not questioning the results, that this is what many ILMers really believe, but that doesn't mean I can't complain about it - you know, like that election that happened the other day.)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Loser" is still great and it's all because of the slide guitar and the wrong, deranged Spanish.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You are stupid.
Ha ha ha. Trolled someone after all.

(I'm not questioning the results, that this is what many ILMers really believe, but that doesn't mean I can't complain about it - you know, like that election that happened the other day.)

Sure, but you made it sound as if you thought the collated results should reflect your view of the nineties better. (When the point is that only your own list does that, and the end list reflects no one's)
