haha shakey got his lick in first

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

but as usual he is right

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Can we keep him like we did with D00m Patrol? You know sort of an ill tempered pet, like a lap dog.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

But he's not ill-tempered! That's a very poor equation to draw. He is supremely calm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I noticed, but still he doesn't seem to move, like some shitsu parked on an old ladys gown.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Geir Hongro would be a great name for a band:
Howsabout Gastr del Hongro?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock history is filled with overrated artists
(Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Animals, Stones, Who, Led
Zeppelin, Doors, Velvet Underground, James Brown, Sly Stone, any
rap, any early house), but Beatles are NOT among them.

Funniest thing I've read on ILM yet!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

...or a Fishbone b-side

LOL! But it's too short, it would be more like "Geir Hongro's Multitudinous Orrifaces of Dick Slamming Power Capitalism Shtick".

I've been reading WAY too much Dr. Madd Vibe. :D

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock history is filled with overrated artists [...] but Beatles are NOT among them.
[ RANT MODE ON ]
Bullshit!
Fact 1: No band, no matter how good, deserves THAT level of idolatry. I'm sick to death of the glazed-eyed cultists! It would not amaze me if some yoyo came up to be, grabbed me by the lepels and barked (in a perfect Dennis Hopper impersonation) "Don't understand, maaaaaan! Paul McCartney Invented GRAVITY!"; It's just pop music, okay, put away your nude photos of Ringo Starr and get a grip on something other than shmendrick. 'Kay?
Fact 2: They've never made an album without at least one genuine stinker ("yellow submarine", "oh blah dee, oh blah duh!"); So the pretense that "all their albums are perfect" is complete bunk.
Fact 3: They spent half their career as milksops and the second half as two pairs of Befuddlemint Twins! So they never achieved either the rawk grit of a good blues based act, nor the clarity of a finely tuned Classical quartet. So the pretense that they were the perfect balance of rock/pop/classical is bunk.

Now, on the plus side, I will admit the following:
Counterfact 1: They did innovate/popularize alot of nifty ideas BUT they didn't invent everything they get credit for. Concept Albums, foreign instruments and close harmony singing existed long before the Beatles.
Counterfact 2: It would the rantings of a madman to not admit They We're the Most Popular Band Evah. BUT this does not mean they are the BEST band. Especially in genres they aren't masters of. Their stabs at folk or country do not surpass the specialist masters (ie. "Rocky Raccoon" is NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a better Country Choon than Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire". In fact, it's a borderline irritating tune thats not even a match for "A Girl Named Sue"); So any claims that they are the BEST BAND EVAH overlooks the fact that to be the best BAND they have to be better than all bands in EVERY GENRE. Face it, they aren't better metalheads than GnR, Def Leppard, Metallica or Slayer. They aren't a better Jazz quartet either. And their combined funk doesn't even equal the Funk Level of one of P-Funk's roadies.
GRRRRRAAAAGRGGGHHH!
(pant pant pant pant pant....)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmmmm....donuts....

Or maybe not. It was the toffee popcorn I just ate that gave me the psycho-carbo energy to write that rant.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:37 (twenty-three years ago)

But he's not ill-tempered! That's a very poor equation to draw. He is supremely calm.

Just you wait until I consult my good friend Usama Bin Laden. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:14 (twenty-three years ago)

haha people died!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm... Perhaps he's friends with Rolci?

Prude (Prude), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Whose this Usama guy, I dont think he posted on A.M.A?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

No offense Geir, but until a couple days ago I thought you were an urban legend. Some practical joker's idea of the ultimate rockist.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:34 (twenty-three years ago)

considering how he gives more love to peter gabriel over stephin merritt his 'I'm all about melodies' stance is fraudulence and whitewash

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean if his 'melody - yes, rhythm - no' thing was for real, then you could agree with it or disagree with it whatever, but he clearly hasn't really thought it out - it's like he happened to like a bunch of bands already (genesis, xtc) and then tried to pretend there was some aesthetic guiding his choices when really they're more arbitrary then he'd like to admit, as he clearly doesn't really adhere to the aesthetic he puts forth, just pretends to.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a shame though as someone actually representing a 'melodies - yes, rhythm - no' outlook would really have something to add to ILM, but this guy just spits out soundbites. oh well.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:37 (twenty-three years ago)

plus clearly he's a bit of a social retard

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:40 (twenty-three years ago)

blount, the problem with meritt is he doesn't use enough chords, see? so his melodies are simple rather than harmonic.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:00 (twenty-three years ago)

someone with an adamant claim in melodies would want purity though - plato's wall, bushmiller's rocks, army-navy the 'best' college rivalry becuz its the purest, etc., etc.; hongro betrays true melodicists when he favors genesis over abba, and obv. gabriel over merritt. he tries to have his cake and eat it too.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Whoever said that melodies were supposed to be simple?

I am first and foremost defending the European classical musical traditions, and those popular musicians that help keep them alive, and those were not simple.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Just you wait until I consult my good friend Usama Bin Laden. :-)
Yeahh, he's a jerkwad, but his sister -- Ursula Bin Laden -- wow! What a hottie bling bling babe. Even with the beard, she's Babe-raham Lincoln.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

custos means "thanks to the beard" but is frightened of the lineaments of his own desire

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

which is cool obv

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Welll, you never see those Arabian babes without the veil, right?

Jess Hill (jesshill), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

honor Greig

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Gorge Rhino!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

honor Greig

That would be "Honor Grieg", only Grieg was actually among the less melodic composer, with an annoying fondness for frygian tonality...

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Rig her goon

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to welcome Geir to the world of ILX, and apologise for all the people who are being mean to our new friend.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to welcome Geir to the world of ILX, and apologise for all the people who are being mean to our new friend.

That's OK. As stated earlier (in this thread, which started half a year prior to my joining ILX :-) ) I have already put my friend Bin Laden on the case. :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Homegro = the new connor?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 March 2003 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

what is the big deal with Sirrah Hongro anyway? is he some kind of internet personality or something?

why is his having opinions about music and being prepared to argue them in a polite and friendly fashion seen by some as a mark of mentalism?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:42 (twenty-three years ago)

You have never tried arguing with him, I see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I never argue with people.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

His opinions about music is exactly what makes ppl accuse him of mentalism, DV, as they are stunningly unorthodox. Then again, anyone with standard ILM anti-rockist views would be seen as a bit of a mentalist in many circles, too.

I, too, think that the Geir-mocking happening around here is getting mighty tiresome, much as he might seem to invite it; it's also quickly gone from good-natured "You Are Fucking Insane" style mockery to rather tasteless personal insults, which is doubly unfortunate.

I've never tried arguing with Geir either, because *obviously* that's hopeless- he's set up this extremley strict system that seems to work for him and he won't budge on it no matter what you say, so why bother? (this last paragraph could basically be summed up as "Tom was OTM"

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Then again, anyone with standard ILM anti-rockist views would be seen as a bit of a mentalist in many circles, too.

Hey, I am not a rockist, I am a popist! :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

that part of the post had nothing to do with any sort of rockisms/popisms on *your* part, it was just about how ILM attitude in general would fit in with other types of listening groups.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 7 March 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

he's set up this extremley strict system that seems to work for him and he won't budge on it no matter what you say, so why bother

This is true, and it's cool. What is even cooler is that the guy's methodology indicates that the Supernaturals and Dodgy are the greatest artists of the 20th century. The whole of ILM is trumped in wilful contrariness, and therefore made redundant.
