imagine a band where the first thing was to immediatly make people not want to listen. then, do the exact opposite on the next release.

now, we're back like a bad VD you can't get rid of, just hide from.

eedd, Monday, 13 June 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Time for a revive. I'm playing with a band called Begushkin at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ on July 7.

It's the project of Dan Smith, a sometime Will Oldham side-man. It's good -- literary, funny, and also kind of creepy. Filling out the band will be the bass player for The Occasion and the guitarist from my band, American Altitude.

E-mail me if you want a track and I'll send you one.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:15 (twenty years ago)

xpost - I love Swimmer One! I'm yet to see them live but will hopefully catch them soon.

My band - The A Forest (www.theaforest.co.uk) though there's not much recorded for you to listen to, we did have a split 7" out at the end of last year. We're part-way through the recording of our album, which should be out at the end of this year or start of next.

Michael Lambert, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

Clearly and the Mainstream

We're from Chicago and play out about once a month and we are real, genuine article power pop. Lots of harmonies and lots of melody. Our entire EP is available 4 FREE and located in the "Steal" section and we have a music video as well that was done by the same director of the new Viva Voce video.
Our next show is July 16th in Chicago - come see for yourself if you're in the Dirty Chi!

Matty L, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

b'angelo, I am actually rather enjoying "What We Learned in College" at the moment.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

hurting- great! thanks a lot. I have now at least touched that one heart, etc. etc.

I encourage you to check the site regularly if you dig it, I and some others are starting to really get it rolling and it will update a lot, hopefully. We don't really enjoy sticking to one style, so there should be a pretty good variety of stuff if one thing don't float yr boat.

b'angelo, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I'm listening to the demos now, and I like them too -- reminds me a little of Pullman, which is a band my band also has been compared to.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm a bit confused though -- are there more than one band on your site?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh sorry, nevermind, I see now.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it was a definite "american" phase, attributable almost totally to the acquisition of a lap steel. I like your stuff too! let me know if you're ever in the Chi. (it's I and another right now, but very pseudononinonomous)

b'angelo, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

mine is Pink Panzers : www.pinkpanzers.com

(it's in french, though).

you can download some tracks in "propagande".

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

The next Canasta show will be July 11th in Madison at the High Noon. Then, a few days later, on the 15th, we're back in Chicago, playing Schubas. We're still working on the album (currently lining up Dav3 Max Crawf0rd and Edith Fr0st, among others, to lay down some tracks) and shooting for a September release, with a record-release show at Subterranean.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Peter Smith and I have a band, the Fake Accents. I like us. But I suppose I kind of have to.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Cool to see all these new Chicago people.

I like Pullman. It's nice Sunday morning music.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

We're playing Mercury Lounge this Saturday, 7/2, at 11:30. If NYC ILMers show up, I'll do my Tindersticks-esque cover of "I Kill Everything I Fuck." Maybe.

cicatrix, Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

my friend tony, himself a one-time some-time arkansan, has just contributed to to this mp3 blog: ihttp://www.moistworks.com/ and wrote about some of his fave arkansas rock of the recent past, including two of my bands (affection and W/O). i wouldn't have necessarily picked the tunes he picked to share, but hey, he likes what he likes and i'm not complainin.

and for the very very curious there's this: ihttp://www.myspace.com/affectionlr

myspace for affection with some other tunes that my bandmate set up for kicks. there's some bloody awful looking pic of me on there, though. beware.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend and I have a band called Arins, and we have two songs so far. Here's the one that's not a cover: 4000 Miles

Really liked your songs, Naive Teen Idol - "Mary Gee" especially.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

My band, the Franchise, has the following shows coming up:

August 16: The Black Cat, Washington, DC
August 27: Laughing Lizard Lounge, Alexandria, VA
August 28: Continental, New York, NY (first show in NYC; w00t.)
September 17: Staccato Lounge, Washington, DC
October 16: DC9, Washington, DC

For more information than you could really ever want, see http://www.listentothefranchise.com or http://www.cdbaby.com/thefranchise.

(Sound samples on the first site are old and not especially representative--little too folkypoppy. Album songs are closer to what is happening now.)

I'm the drummer in The Hundred Handed

We're just pressing our first album which we recorded in a church hall in cornwall last summer with a good friend. All exciting stuff, well for us anyway :)

The newest mp3's are at http://www.myspace.com/hundredhanded

I guess one might say our influences are Bowie, Roxy Music, Fugazi...
Any comments welcome :)

So I am coming to New York to play a rock and roll concert next weekend.

That is, my band, the Franchise, is playing at Continental on Sunday, August 28, at 9:45. You could come to the show. Or, you know, not.

I Dream Of Sleep (kate), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

My band (www.thearticles.net) also put on our own little night every two months at the buffalo bar in London. We're very lazy and find it difficult to find bands, so if any of you would like to play sometime, email me.

It's fun, usually.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

for the DCish folk, FAs are playin at the Warehouse Next Door tonight

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Finally I have my stuff available on the net. It's a kind of industrial-folk-electronica, but one thing at a time. :-) The project is called Sq'Etch, and you can check the Homemade EP here:

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Mama Digdown's Brass Band is mixing the set of songs that we recorded in Switzerland this summer, which will hopefully be released within a couple months.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I have a dj "mix" cd out soon:

http://www.igetrvng.com/shop_mx4.html

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 22 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Dan - looking forward to your mix cd!

My band: Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds -- our new album is out next month. It's called "Philosophy and Underwear", out on TransSolar Records. The promos are out in Europe so won't be surprised if it's leaked soon. Fans of Kid's past stuff will be pleasantly surprised, methinks. Touring all over Europe this autumn (hurrah!) -- I hope we get to play Optimo!

We're doing a show as part of the Howl Festival here on NYC this Saturday, the 27th, btw.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

i have started a myspace thingy for the newer more whimsical and perhaps slightly more depressed me of late, which can be found at http://www.myspace.com/lighttoucher ... for the time being it's all processed guitar stuff... melodic... basically ripping off fennesz, tbh, but i think it's pretty good anyhow.
