I listened to this today, some of it is abrasive but has dance beats.

I want more stuff that goes well with the hip-hop and funk on my computer.

Virgin Prunes are a good example, I was listening to them too. I like reggae / dub with "goth" too.

The Worst Chef in America!! (u s steel), Thursday, 10 September 2009 06:44 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah def go for Bauhaus then.

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Thursday, 10 September 2009 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

Despite all their Crowley/esoteric inclinations, dont know if 23 Skidoo can qualify as "goth": but they knew a thing or two about funk.

Also some Clock DVA.

Marco Damiani, Thursday, 10 September 2009 07:11 (sixteen years ago)

Skidoo definitely new a thing or two about goth, even if they did precede it by a couple of years.

ch4rlie fr4m3, Thursday, 10 September 2009 07:59 (sixteen years ago)

The Wolfgang Press surely are worth a mention ?

mark e, Thursday, 10 September 2009 08:37 (sixteen years ago)

Can't stop binging on this nonsense today. Bimble would have loved this thread eh?

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Thursday, 10 September 2009 08:47 (sixteen years ago)

hang on, didn't the Mission do a dance styled album, with funky drum loops ?

and yes, i too thought that nick.

mark e, Thursday, 10 September 2009 08:50 (sixteen years ago)

hang on, didn't the Mission do a dance styled album, with funky drum loops

This sounds deeply horrific. Hook me up someone.

Not sure how 23 Skidoo precede goth by a couple of years, since they were formed in 1979, the same year Bela Lugosi's Dead came out, and they were playing DIY post-punk then anyway.

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

ah ha ..

"The Mission, for some strange reason, went for a little bit of everything. "Never Again," the opener on Masque, sounds like the Mission really trying to go big-league '90s U2-Achtung Baby style, but ending up a bit more like a dance remix of themselves than a multi-styled stadium filler. "

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:5dq7g4ettvoz

no idea as to whether its 'funky' ..

mark e, Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:08 (sixteen years ago)

"regiment" by brian eno/david byrne isn't strictly goth, but it would probably fit in nicely on a "funky goth" itunes playlist

messiahwannabe, Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:14 (sixteen years ago)

the Mission really trying to go big-league '90s U2-Achtung Baby style

Yikes, didn't order that.

'Never Again' indeed

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:20 (sixteen years ago)

Worth it for the clown playing the cello though. Literally.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:20 (sixteen years ago)

Worth it for the clown playing the cello though

surely that was the inspiration for psychoville

mark e, Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:23 (sixteen years ago)

Not seen Psychoville but if it involves someone repeatedly hitting Wayne Hussey in the nuts with a banjo, then the music of the Mission probably did inspire it.

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Thursday, 10 September 2009 09:29 (sixteen years ago)

oooh yes :

Einstürzende Neubauten - Yu Gung (A. Sherwood mix)
Tones On Tails - War
Anne Clark - Our Darkness
Medium Medium - hungry, so angry

Jacob Sanders, Thursday, 10 September 2009 10:36 (sixteen years ago)

Gosh, Wolfgang Press of course.

Mind you, their gothier stuff's closer to Nick Cave.

Lord Crutsos Omicron (Curt1s Stephens), Friday, 11 September 2009 04:39 (sixteen years ago)

"Go!" by Tones on Tail would be a better funky example wouldnt it? Still, theres that Bauhaus connection again...

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Friday, 11 September 2009 05:04 (sixteen years ago)

What about any Severed Heads? Seems like they could've come close to this.

QuantumNoise, Friday, 11 September 2009 05:14 (sixteen years ago)

Oh ok if we're getting into new wave/disco then that opens up the floor completely (and for creaky old ex-goths like me, that stuff totally does count).

Dearth Disco (Trayce), Friday, 11 September 2009 05:50 (sixteen years ago)

I dunno if I'd call Dead or Alive/Visage/Bronski Beat funky though.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 11 September 2009 20:47 (sixteen years ago)

Oh whoops -- I thought you meant not goth. Were Dead or Alive funky? I think so. I mean, Bootsy Collins didn't lose any sleep, but they certainly tried to be.

"So messy!" (HI DERE), Friday, 11 September 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

yep but "everyday (is halloween)" strikes me as the ultimate funky goth track

damo tsu tsuki (r1o natsume), Friday, 11 September 2009 21:18 (sixteen years ago)

Oh Alex. I gave up defending bands like the Cocteaus as notgoth years ago, just relent on the KJ thing ;)

love that video so much.
also, re the original question some new additions : Black Strobe.
their 'burn your own church' album : very goth, and very funky.
also, the brilliant, but short lived band, O Children, totally did the goth dance thing.
