jaymc, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

1) who is this tard singing the chorus?? is this the cat from one republic or coldplay dude or what?

false coldplay dude called matthew santos. did some bad choruses on food & liquor too.

2) why does the intro sound like old acid house? is this sampled from a guy called gerald or something?

cause fnf's in-house producers are crazy

-- and what, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:20

xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

did some bad choruses on food & liquor too.

I'm sure I've said this before but "American Terrorist" was like my #1 keeper off that album.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 14 February 2008 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Why does the beginning of the "Superstar" video look like the beginning of the "U Got the Look" video?

The Reverend, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Lupe's bungling of Tribe Called Quest lyrics on some award show seems to have tainted him for some

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

lol welcome to three months ago

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

it did make him seem like a taint, yeah.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

I think cuz he's on tour now it was getting brought up again.

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

Lupe's bungling of Tribe Called Quest lyrics on some award show seems to have tainted him for some

-- curmudgeon, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:04

yeah i'm a little skeptical of his 'i never heard tribe before' shit cause "paris, tokyo" sounds straight off midnight marauders.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not usually one for grandstanding boycotts, but if he refuses to listen to a classic album (or several of them) out of spite or some misguided attempt to make a point, i'm happy to refuse to listen to his definitely-not-a-classic new album.

still kinda shocked at how well his new one's selling, though, even given the fact that bougie rap fans are the only kind that haven't stopped buying CDs.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 15 February 2008 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

rhymefest is probably rushing out his second album

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 February 2008 21:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'll stand up for Superstar guy! Great hook!

which one?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Does it matter? There's nothing about Lupe fiasco that Ethan would like anyway.

HI DERE, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

which one?

-- BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:29 (4 minutes ago) Link

dude who c+p's every other song posted on Nah Right to the ringtone thread can't figure out he's talking about the "Superstar" remix w/ T.I. that just leaked today? anyway I kinda like the remix, best case scenario for anything with such a terrible beat/hook anyway.

Dan, Ethan said he liked "Kick, Push" at the beginning of this thread, so maybe he's not hating on Lupe in general, just "Superstar" (which, again, is awful).

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

that superstar song is fucking horrible

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

matthew santos is the worst

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 March 2008 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

i like hearing "superstar" on the radio. not to get all okayplayer but it is kinda a breath of fresh air every now and then. jeezy is great on the remix

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 March 2008 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

"Superstar" is nowhere near the best song on the album but I don't really see how it's hatable or particularly awful.

HI DERE, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:49 (eighteen years ago)

am i the only person who likes rap songs with goofy coldplay choruses like "homecoming" and "beach chair" and "superstar"

max, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

haha i mean obviously im not or i wouldnt hear this song all over the place

max, Monday, 10 March 2008 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Beach Chair," but I gotta look at every Coldplay rap tune on a case by case basis, can't generalize with these things.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 10 March 2008 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

all those choruses are technically good imo-- in terms of melodies and such-- i just think their voices sound off

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 March 2008 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

just really thin i think

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 March 2008 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

like if lupe was gonna pick a weed carrier to sing the 'superstar' hook i'd much rather have heard sarah green than matthew santos

Life and music career

Early years

Matthew Santos was born on December 28, 1982 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His mother is Scandinavian and his father is Spanish-Filipino.

He graduated from Southwest High School in Minneapolis. He moved to Chicago in 2001 to study music composition at Columbia College Chicago. Santos released his first independent solo album Change is Better in 2004.

Music career

Santos launched the Matthew Santos Music Company in January 2008. His five-piece band includes Aviva Jaye (vocals, keyboard), Robert Tucker (drums) Graham Burris (bass) and Matthew Nelson (keyboard). He released his first live album "Matters of the Bittersweet," in November 2007 under Candy-Rat Records. Following his release of Matters of the Bittersweet, he developed a following surrounding his video performances on YouTube.

In 2006, Santos was featured on Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor album on the song "American Terrorist." Santos was featured on two additional tracks on Fiasco's following album Lupe Fiasco's The Cool, released in December 2007; "Superstar" and "Fighters." Santos performed the first single/video "Superstar" on David Letterman's first live performance after the Writer's Guild of America strike on January 2, 2008.

In 2007, Santos opened the mtvU Woodie Awards with Lupe Fiasco and Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. In addition, Santos performed at the Las Vegas Vegoose Music Festival, Lollapalooza Chicago, SXSW, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Summerfest, Bumbershoot and Chicago's Around the Coyote Arts Festival. He headlined with Gym Class Heroes, recorded his six-song EP "As a Crow Flies" and played with The Roots, Bob Schneider and Josh Kelley.

He collaborated on John Martyn's previously unreleased folk-rock inspired ballad, "Anna." As Santos took the vocals, Martyn played the guitar and Phil Collins was featured on the drums. The reincarnation of the song will be featured on Santos' own forthcoming studio album. Santos recorded "Days Like This" with soul singer Sam Butler, Jr. from Blind Boys of Alabama and he is recording "We All Fall Down" with L. Subramaniam Most recently, Santos collaborated with Taboo from The Black Eyed Peas for his upcoming solo album.

Santos says, "I hope to inspire people through music to own their talents, take responsibility for their talents and use them, hopefully, to serve the greater good ... I want to show the world that you can do something that you love and live in this society, finding a balance between coexisting in a social construct and following your heart."

Personal life

Santos is an avid painter, writer and traveler. Santos is influenced by India's spiritual teacher Osho and a professor he had in college, William Hayashi. Hayashi is a continual inspiration for Santos on serving the greater good. He resides in Chicago's urban neighborhood Wicker Park.
