Always puts me in a great mood, though I REALLY don't like the two Barlow tracks (bad way to end the album) (gotta remember to delete those). Very much that classic feel though, which is more than one could have expected this far along.

I forget which one has that super jangly guitar riff, either the first or third track. I love that one, gotta listen to the rest again when I've got a chance

k3vin k., Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:28 (sixteen years ago)

oh yeah the lou stuff is kinda disappointing. the first one really gets going by the end of it but it's all sorta jarring in a bad way.

though I REALLY don't like the two Barlow tracks

Ah, see, this is the case with EVERY Dino Jr album for me...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 13:10 (sixteen years ago)

the one that ends the album definetely should go yeah.

Ludo, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

i really liked his tunes on Beyond, though (and he actually had a song on side 1 for once!). i don't think there's a single album this year i feel more conflicted/disappointed about not liking as much as other people. and i mean, i was pretty into Hand It Over and More Light.

some dude, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

"Your Weather" is amazing!

Simon H., Wednesday, 26 August 2009 14:06 (sixteen years ago)

some dude, hand it over was great!!

teef hoit (stevie), Thursday, 3 September 2009 12:17 (sixteen years ago)

"Alone" (from Hand it Over) may be the most miserable-yet-awesome epic J has ever recorded.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it was great! just doesn't seem to be universally well regarded, though.

some dude, Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

It has some less-than-memorable tracks (as do most of his/Dino's records), but it also has some pretty unique elements as well--MBV's backing vocals for starters.... I pretty much like everything he/they have done except for "Free so Free"--that one was just lackluster in every way.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i feel like he's never made a perfect album but he's really consistent from album to album (although i missed Free So Free and never got the impression i really needed to hear it, so i'll take your word for it). Hand It Over definitely has some distict sounds that make it probably my 2nd fav Dino album after You're Living.

some dude, Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

That's what I'm saying. This is a really good album. Actually liked the one before it a little more. Still, that cover art is fucking outstanding.

1. Don't Pretend You Didn't Know
2. Watch The Corners
3. Almost Fare
4. Stick A Toe In
5. Rude
6. I Know It Oh So Well
7. Pierce The Morning Rain
8. What Was That
9. Recognition
10. See It On Your Side

Don't Pretend You Didn't Know is a very Mascis title; Pierce The Morning Rain, not so much.

mizzell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 19:48 (fourteen years ago)

Album title doesn't seem very Mascis like. Good cover though.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

So many prime Mascis titles here. "I Know It Oh So Well" and "Stick a Toe In" are pretty good, but "Almost Fare" and "What Was That" are Green Mind-caliber

Evan R, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

been in a heavy Dino Jr phase lately, psyched to hear there's a new one on the way

some dude, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

the last two are so so good. they are total sanctuary records for me, I come back to them on headphones when I need them, either to fry myself to I Don't Wanna Go There or for the frazzled tender slow jams. I can see Pierce The Morning Rain as a J thing. his lyrics are so simple and sad now.

blossom smulch (schlump), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:14 (fourteen years ago)

I hope the bass makes an appearance in the mix this time.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:18 (fourteen years ago)

Sanctuary records is the perfect way to describe them. Dinosaur Jr. was my favorite band though middle school (which I suppose is odd in hindsight), so having them back and making honestly great new albums is such a source of comfort. It's vindicating to know that middle school Evan wasn't wrong; these guys were and are awesome

Evan R, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

why is that odd? they were my favorite in middle and high school too.

mizzell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:21 (fourteen years ago)

Eh, I guess it's not odd in and of itself so much as it's odd to think of a time when Dinosaur Jr. could have been a middle schooler's favorite band. And sometimes I forget that they were my favorite. It's easy to simply those memories and make Nirvana or The Clash or some other important band my favorite. But no, it was always Dino Jr.

Evan R, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

Hah, so true. Not sure why Lou let's that happen.

I downloaded my copy from e music and never got round to asking them why they had managed to upload it without bass. Is it reallymeant to sound that bad? Christ

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think it sounds that awful, but I really focus on J's guitar so much that I don't really find myself missing the bass all that much.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 21:25 (fourteen years ago)

Still haven't heard any recent Dinosaur Jr, but on their first few albums and live those rickenbacker bass chords were half the beauty.

Zaireeka Badu (NickB), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 21:28 (fourteen years ago)

fwiw i always thought the bass came through fine on the last couple, or never noticed its absence. it's obv way more prominent on the lou songs, too.

but I really focus on J's guitar so much that I don't really find myself missing the bass all that much.

I'd have to listen to Beyond again, but it's inaudible on Farm, AFAIC

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:26 (fourteen years ago)

the bass is plenty prominent on Beyond iirc but on Farm it felt like the guitar was way too high in the mix to the detriment of everything else, not just bass -- drums and vox too

some dude, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:38 (fourteen years ago)

Still haven't heard any recent Dinosaur Jr

Really, set aside a couple hours and hear those records. You will probably be surprised at how much they feel like the band just picked up where they left off a couple decades ago.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:42 (fourteen years ago)

seem to remember a huge amount of the first run of Farm were mastered incorrectly so i guess there are a ton of bad copies out there still

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

Never seen 'em live, so the three-day residency 5 mins from my house is quite a treat.

I actually prefer the new stuff

yeah it is obviously gonna sound like presentism/contrarianism, but i'm w/this - i'm way more likely to put one of the last two on. the weird angles some of them have - i got lost, said the people, &c - sorta match up with the weird, unique-to-dinosaur jams from the first run of records (gettin' rough, severed lips or w/e).

Vinyl or CD? How would I know which one I have?

Vinyl or CD? How would I know which one I have?

The vinyl is several times larger in diameter than the CD

Poliopolice, Thursday, 14 June 2012 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

both playable on my tape deck right

"The song itself is at least five years old, J Macis tells Rolling Stone: “We tried to play it on (2007′s Beyond). It really sounded bad.”'

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

the new tunes reflect a natural progression into fuzzed-out ballads with gentler melodies.

That sounds suspiciously like the two post-Green Mind albums that I didn't really like so much. Hoping Mascis has perfected the formula since then.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

slow jams on the last couple have been real nice, i think. & inventive. like with cellos and stuff.

blossom smulch (schlump), Saturday, 30 June 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

i like this jam. a lot. like the production, too.

if the rest of the record holds up, they'll be 3 for 3.

not quite as good as farm, i think

but it's a niche i'm unlikely to ever grow tired of hearing

I keep wanting things to be a little sloppier, but really liking this album a lot. Lou's "Rude" is nice.

dlp9001, Thursday, 20 September 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

man this album sounds really great, could easily see this becoming my favorite of the reunion albums

some dude, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

right now, this is #2 on my reunion list. (after Beyond)

whole record sounds so great. love the purple swirl vinyl, too.

lou's songs are particular standouts.
