It might be more interesting to ask "what were the last five records you listened to?" The answer of course never corresponds with the last five records bought. I've just knocked up a compilation tape for the Oxford Tube on Monday morning, the last five tracks of which are as follows: "Cool Cool Collie" by Hopeton Lewis; "The Music Goes Round And Round" by Henry Hall and his Orchestra, vocal by George Elrick; "Respect" by Rotary Connection; "There Goes Concorde Again" by . . . And The Native Hipsters; and a mix of birdsong recorded by me on Boars Hill at 6:00 this morning and Eric Portman's closing remarks about morality from Powell & Pressburger's "Canterbury Tale." Am yet to decide whether to segue into the Stylistics' "People Make The World Go Round" (album version) or Bomb 20's "Made of Shit" - but may well just leave the tape as it is.

See what I mean? Much more individual and interesting than the expected litany of REM/Elliott/Mouse on Mars/cLOUDDead/Elbow. Yes no no yes?

Marcello Carlin, Saturday, 19 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Electroloids - dunno (but it's made by half of Drexciya)
Brian Ferry - Slave to Love, but it came with a free 12" of The Cars 'Drive' and 'Only You' by the Flying Pickets, can't argue with that
Currently on the stereo, thou I didn't buy them:
Manitoba - Start Breaking my Heart (leaf)
Schneider TM - The Light 3000 (electronica remix of The Smiths - There's a light....)
Bobby Conn - Dunno which album, but I'm sure he's bit of a genius?

Last five things I listened to? OK:

Just now in work? Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction. Made me extremely miserable except for "Sweet Child Of Mine" and the changeover in "Rocket Queen".

On way into work? Mixtape which - again - seemed to take on a gloomy bent as I recorded it. The Dismemberment Plan's "Spider In The Snow" accompanying my 5 minute walk in.

On the Oxford Tube last night? Various Artists - The Rough Guide To West Africa. And before that Various Artists - Afrique Dynamique. African music seems to be the only thing that can relax me currently. Playing them I suddenly wanted to listen to and write about nothing but this stuff. Then it struck me I couldn't say much about it and I only have 5 or 6 records/tapes of it. When I got back in I stayed up for several hours but played nothing.

Before that? "Fear Of Drowning" a single by British Sea Power, who seem promising enough though not as interesting as the last two minutes of a set I caught suggested (consisting of them beating the stage and each other with branches).

Tom, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Marcello, you have anticipated at least one key element of the new site.

(and then he thrusts forward to "Southern Hospitality" again ...)

Can I kill myself in self-contradiction now?

Robin Carmody, Monday, 21 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Tim, Tuesday, 6 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hmpph. Seems that I've bought next to nothing since those five back in May. Did get that Beta Band thingie, but it sounds all a bit too even, or something. It's ok though. Sebadoh's Harmacy I got as a gift. Jamiroquai - Funk Odyssey, appeared mysteriously. I also got a commemorative CD from the Split Crow pub in Halifax. Almost bought a Pinback one, but the sticker price was a bit rich so feh... *yawn* I'm all terribly dull and stuff.

Kim, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now posting to the proper thread

The Raw and the Cooked - Fine Young Cannibals

Rag-na-Rok - GWAR

and a mini-boxset for 12 bucks that contained three Black Sabbath CD's: (Black Sabbath, Paranoid and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath) -- Lord Custos ([email protected]), November 07, 2001.

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And now we'll all have to meet in this thread in one months time and let each other know if it was a smart purchase or not.

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Today:

Alvo Noto - Transform
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions - Easy Pieces (This is on right now. It is making me angry.)
Genesis - Nursery Cryme
The Best Disco In Town (a 1977 Tee Vee Records compilation)

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sundar, is your Easy Pieces a CD? (I'd like to get it in that format.) How can 'Why I Love Country Music' make you angry?

Stuff I'm waiting for:
Negatives box set
Nowhere - Ride (rerelease with bonus tracks)
Going Blank Again - Ride (rerelease with bonus tracks)
The Early Hi-Ball Years - the Coctails (Finally. It wasn't the next next time, as I had predicted.)

youn, Wednesday, 7 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it seems to me this sort of thing is also good introductory material. hi!
1. death cab for cutie - photo album (with bonus disc!) and something about airplanes
2. burning airlines - identikit
3. my bloody valentine - ecstasy and wine
4. heavenly - heavenly vs. satan, le jardin de heavenly, space manatee single
5. amy linton/stewart anderson split single
annnd
6. simple machines neo metro box set

the first two were bought because i just saw them together in richmond & it was great great great... the heavenly stuff all came together in one blissful package of happiness... the neo metro box set (speaking of split 7s and simple machines, which people were) was tucked away in the used record store for cheap-o, and is uplifting to look at.

ginny, Thursday, 8 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

youn: It's on vinyl. I sat through the first side. The godawful fucking voice was what was making me angriest. What's he trying to do, parody a hillbilly accent or something? Aside from that, the mediocre guitar playing and the fruity arrangements didn't help. I'll probably give it another chance though.

And it's Alva Noto, sorry.
