I guess the cat's out of the bag now, then. Was he a NYT contributor while the blog was still up?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 18 October 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no they pick people every week to write that column, and they picked that guy because he has a blog too.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 18 October 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

tmftml?

jed_ (jed), Monday, 18 October 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.popfactor.com/tmftml/
he's also an ilxer

Symplistic (shmuel), Monday, 18 October 2004 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Belgian crunk-techno remixes sound great! (ha ha I'm exactly the sort of music-geek friend tmftml is complaining about!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 October 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

tmftml was the king of NY blogs, but then he retired, and the game hasn't been the same.

Symplistic (shmuel), Monday, 18 October 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The blog game is corny now...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 October 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

the observer piece was actually about tmftml (i haven't read the times article yet so i didn't see who wrote it).

Cynthia Nixon Now More Than Ever (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 18 October 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The blog game is corny now...

-- Tim Finney (tfinne...), October 18th, 2004.

Why?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 18 October 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Cuz Corny is the new Cool, fool!

Nancy Boy (scottkundla), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering, is there crunk from outside the US? Because if there was, I'd really want to hear it.

The SPIN magazine article is out now too, it's in the issue with Green Day on the cover. I kinda hate the photo of me (but I hate all photos of me, so it's got nothing to do with Reuben Cox), but Jon Caramanica's article about mp3 blogs is by far the best one to date.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still waiting on the "fortune," by the way.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll come, beebs. Congrats.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 18 October 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

good luck, with the rewriting.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 18 October 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm glad he gets the fame, and i hope he gets the fortune. fluxblog is a great source of information and pleasure, i'm a regular (even if i don't post) and i'm always thankful that it exists.

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 18 October 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

fluxblog is the thinking man's pitchfork

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

feel free to use that matt

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

We Are The World reads Fluxblog.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

fluxblog is the white man's cnn

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, WAtW totally reads Fluxblog.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Marcello, I was making a bad Jay-Z joke after Symplistic's post about tmftml.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 18 October 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

geez,
someday i'll be able to reminisce about bickering with a BBC about pavement...

and my lame points will increase by 10.

eedd, Monday, 18 October 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahaa...and I got to make sure that Kix, Warrant and Rip Taylor are there to share in the glory!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!

I'd say that Matt's the bomb or something, but I'm clearly biased.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 18 October 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember there was a short time in Summer 2003 where every "We are the World" track was lifted from Gabba Pod. As if nobody would ever find out.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind when Pitchfork poaches material from my site - they have a lot more readers and a great deal more influence than I have in the indie rock demo, so if they can get their audience interested in stuff like Annie and The Mo, that's good news.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay Matthew! Nice hanging out with you this weekend, btw.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jay. You should make your way over to the CMJ panel thread - I need some help in getting across the terror of Tobi.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course ppl on PFM read Fluxblog! Why wouldn't we? In the past couple of months, I have put the brakes on posting things right after Matthew does - both the Chico remix and Love Is All singles are things I was going to write about but when Matthew did, I didn't bother. I'll write an Anniemal album review soonish (probably next week), and then everyone can say that we just copied Fluxblog again ;)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

*on PFM's staff*

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 18 October 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally well deserved. Just got the SPIN; will read the piece at lunch. Congrats.

Taxi Dancing in the Soft Prison (Ben Boyer), Monday, 18 October 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Go Go GabbaPod!

Nancy Boy (scottkundla), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that SPIN piece online anywhere?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

who is tmftml on ILM?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

He's always posted as TMFTML. But he hasn't for a while now.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

ah ok, thanks.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

No, the SPIN thing is just in the magazine for now. Tofu Hut gets a shout out!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! I'ze famoudous!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had a lot of very good feedback about that Racine song. It's pretty great.

six months pass...
The John Cei Douglas post on fluxblog is mentioned by Crayton Harrison in this week's edition of "Spin Cycle". Hardly the NY Times, I know, but still. You'll probably have to register to read that, but bugmenot.com will sort you out.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Here it is:

Digable Planets/"Blowout Comb" – Now that the jazz-influenced rap trio has reunited and will headline Chicago's Lollapalooza festival, it's time to dust off this 1994 album, which, in retrospect, was waaaay ahead of its time. The Planets got out of beatnik mode and started messing with some harder beats, and the results are funkier and a little angrier than the group's debut, Reachin'.

www.fluxblog.org – At this MP3 blog, art begets art. Cartoonist John Cei Douglas interprets Spoon's "The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine" in graphic short story form. "Valentine," by the way, is one of several sweeping, epic rock songs on the Austin band's latest, Gimme Fiction, due Tuesday.

Lil' Jon and the East Side Boyz, "Crunk Juice" (expanded edition) – The bonus CD features two notable mixes of "What U Gon' Do:" a version with reggaeton stars Daddy Yankee and Pitbull and one with dancehall rappers Elephant Man and Lady Saw. Also, you get Lil' Jon's remix of Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina," which is, in case you didn't know, the party jam of the year.

Crayton Harrison

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! I got mentioned!

Bring on the NY Times.

Suedey (John Cei Douglas), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

Congrats.

more obscure than what you find on commercial radio.

what an odd thing to say

choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

Why Lindsay Buckingham, why now? Did I miss an explanation post?

Over the past few months I have become fascinated by Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. I had always liked their music but for whatever reason this stuff has become a lot more interesting and resonant for me recently...Also, I figured that there were probably a significant number of readers who either were not very aware of Lindsey’s music or hadn’t given it much thought.

Considering who likely reads Fluxblog in 2011, this is probably true.

FMBB4LYFE

DJI, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:22 (six years ago)

the board was Barbelith, it's completely off the web now iirc but was originally fans of Grant Morrison's Invisibles comic series

mh, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:25 (six years ago)

oh yeah I knew that one too (although I didn't post there), mattybeebs linked it to FMBB more than once

but yeah, both are completely gone from the web, like they never existed

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:27 (six years ago)

what was FMBB? sounds familiar

mh, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:29 (six years ago)

Fake Matador Bulletin Board

I don't think the real Matador Bulletin Board is online anymore either lol

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:41 (six years ago)

i lurked on barbelith for years, it was grate

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 July 2019 20:42 (six years ago)

it was a bulletin-board style site similar to (but much uglier than) ILX for nerds to argue about 90s indie rock (Pavement, primarily). Morbz, Johnny Fever, and several other ILXors gradually migrated over here

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:43 (six years ago)

xp

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 July 2019 20:44 (six years ago)

lol of course you were there, bg

it was relevant to my interests

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 July 2019 20:52 (six years ago)

in the days before wikipedia that was p useful for parsing Morrison's references

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Monday, 1 July 2019 20:57 (six years ago)

lol no one's ever accused me of being a goth before

I don't even like Joy Division

Οὖτις, Monday, 1 July 2019 21:02 (six years ago)

Morrison's fanbase of that time was only part goth

at least compared to another Vertigo writer who'd wrapped up a series in the mid 90s

mh, Monday, 1 July 2019 21:04 (six years ago)

it's a continuum

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 July 2019 21:19 (six years ago)

I posted on Barbelith too (though not that much), and I've always been far from a goth. I assume Invisibles fans were probably more likely to be ravers, like the protagonists?

lmao what the fuck

were you haircare on barbelith too?

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 05:56 (six years ago)

Arthur Sudnam, it was my Other Pseudonym.

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 12:01 (six years ago)

i def remember that name! spent a few minutes earlier browsing through barbelith via the wayback machine - amazed at how many of those posters i remembered vividly

i think i might have ended up at ilx for the first time via it being mentioned offhandedly in a flux post, so i guess matty p is directly to blame for my benighted presence on this board

coroner criticises butt (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 12:09 (six years ago)

He told me directly to check this place out, so clearly he has much to answer for.

I Ate Those Food (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 2 July 2019 12:19 (six years ago)

yet again i am moved to wonder whether we are in fact the same person

when barbelith sends its people, they're not sending their best, okay
