What's funny is that coming out Trent Reznor's mouth, this song sounds insufferably callow and pretentious. But out of Johnny's, only a little bit pretentious and not at all callow.

Where did you hear that they had seperated? As far as I know they're still together...when I saw him in concert a few years ago it broke my heart to hear the emotion in his voice when he introduced June. He seemed ready to fall down and kiss her feet right there.

This video really did bring a tear or two to me eye. It's even creepier and more moving remembering the NIN vid with the animal decaying, and to watch this one in the same context...and geez his voice'll move mountains.

And on the American Recordings tip: they're one of my favorite labels of the past few years. Very daring. Johnny Cash, System of a Down, Wesley Willis, the John Frusciante solo albums, Slayer, not to mention the last Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan recordings were done by Rubin & released through American.

I have decided for the moment that this is the greatest record ever. And actually the Jesus stuff at the end of the video feels strangely earned, unlike most of the heavy-handed symbolism in music videos.

it is a great song-i was surprised how old he looks
its weird to hear him sing the lyrics,i mean i've never heard the original,but it would sound so juvenile coming from anyone else...
the rest of the album is good,although there are a few dodgy tracks (danny boy in particular)
cheesy and all as it is,the we'll meet again cover is great,and i really like personal jesus...
the will oldham and nick cave covers off the other albums are great as well..

The sadness in the ‘Hurt’ video is genuine. Johnny said that “Hurt” was the best anti-drug song he’d ever heard. The rage you see when he pours the wine on the table or starts to weep is a direct result of having lost people to addictions – and almost having lost himself. But he was playing a role. On set, when we yelled, “Cut,” a very different, very funny, much more energetic Johnny Cash emerged. When we were shooting the piano scene, he said, “Maybe you want June to dance naked on the piano there.” June said, “Oh, John!” and the crew broke up. He was playful with June – the degree to which they were in love with each other was palpable after all these years. Johnny was also extremely generous —-he autographed about thirty-five vinyl copies of The Man Comes Around as a parting gift to the crew, who were in awe. That had never been done by any of the forty artists I’ve worked with.
