Good point, which is why "Burial At Sea" and "Born Too Late," as songs, are good. They don't count on drums, which do plod along, but in these cases the plodding adds a little (at least it doesn't subtract) because the melodies are so lugubrious.
The live record gave the drummer a chance to do things on a few "faster" things -- meaning up mid-tempo for most people -- about one third of the time. It surprised me. That along with a good performance of "Born to Late" keep it from being sub-mediocre.

Wino also has a way with certain two word combinations. There is a song on the Vitus live CD where he sings out in his best declamatory style "wretched place!" What wretched place? Where wretched place? Who cares, sounds good.

Well there's a few era's. Maybe you would prefer the wino era? Mind you the 1st Self Titled is one of my faves. But id say maybe try Born Too Late? or possibly V. I think liking Saint Vitus depends on whether you like doom metal or not. I can see how they pissed off all the hardcore punks :)

So apparently there is going to be a Vitus reformation show at Roadburn in Holland next year.
That is pretty cool.

Everybody hates it when I say this but my favorite Vitus record is Children of Doom with Christian Lindersson on lead vox. He's got a great voice and there are some really great songs on that album. They never plodded harder than "Planet of Judgement".
Plus Don Dokken produced the album (in a totally weird reverb-drenched way).
I am very tight with Wino (I booked most of the Hidden Hand tours). Love the guy to pieces but I think his era with Vitus was their weakest. The Reagers shit was classic underachiever doom.
Wino's best work was to come later with Spirit Caravan and certain periods of Hidden Hand.

Saint Vitus drummer Armando Acosta died the other week. We have Joe Carducci's remembrance with a lot of details of recording their early albums in the New Vulgate.

Its good, but I can't help but feeling slightly disappointed with only 34 minutes and two tracks being just instrumental pieces (good ones at that, mind you, but still).

Finally getting to hear the new record in preparation for seeing them Friday. First off, it sounds amazing. Clarity and heft, and though Wino is way up front as always it doesn't take away the power of the band behind as it does on some of the 80s records. However, there isn't a lot of meat on the bones. A short record, and not incredibly memorable despite being recorded so well. Maybe it'll grow a bit more over time, but I'm a few listens in and waiting for the earworm. I do expect the songs will work well live mixed in with the classic material.

Spirit Caravan were so much better. ― pdf (Phil Freeman)
Agreed. The Hidden Hand, also, was much stronger musically and lyrically than St Vitus. Wino's other bands essentially do the same thing but better. Especially the lyrics and riffs.
― moley, Thursday, 18 October 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link
Definitely disagree. Vitus trumps all those other bands. CLASSIC.

Dave's interviewed on the You Don't Know Mojack ep about Thirsty and Miserable. Good interview but apparently Season of Mist fucked them on the last album and he's not happy with them generally. Always seemed like an odd fit tbh.
they also shared this amazing Naomi pic shot at the same time as the EP coverhttps://i.imgur.com/IdPJ3XV.jpg

Kind of wild that they had an album that came and went last year with nary a mention on this thread. It was really, really grest.

in that interview Dave says the label didn't do any promo at all and refused to put it out in time for their scheduled tour. don't know what that's about, but it is a really good album that deserves attention.
