i'm sorry, i guess i'm just noticing these accent marks.
are we supposed to be saying "An-DRAY" 3000 and "Be-yon-SAY" ?
In both cases, the accent marks signal pronunciation rather than emphasis.
André is a common French name, which uses an acute accent to denote that the letter is pronounced as "ay" instead of dropped or swallowed (as in "cadre"). Because the name is so common, nobody would actually be confused if the accent mark weren't there, but it is often retained nonetheless.
Similarly, the name Beyoncé uses an accent mark to indicate that it does not rhyme with "sconce."

Stereogum - Best New Artistshttps://www.stereogum.com/2286447/best-new-artists-2024/lists/best-new-artists/
Best New Bands” of the preceding 12 months, Stereogum has evolved. Today, it is my unique honor to present the first edition of our Best New Artists list. It is exactly the same thing as the Best New Bands lists you know and love, just with a more accurate title.
For this project, the Stereogum staff evaluated our listening histories and the news and features we published since last fall to determine who we think are the best bands, singers, producers, rappers, and musicians to have emerged this year. As always, “new” is subjective; we prioritized artists who put out their debut full-length album this year, but that’s not a hard cutoff for eligibility. Maybe the artist has been around for a while but just signed to a label this year. Maybe they have a hefty Bandcamp catalog but their most recent project was a significant level up. Either way, we’re acknowledging artists who’ve made considerable strides and earned bigger spots on our radar over the past 12 months — sometimes it really all just comes down to vibes.
If you’re an avid Stereogum reader — first of all, thank you — a lot of these names should already ring a bell. We might’ve named them a Band To Watch. They might’ve earned themselves an Album Of The Week accolade. Stereogum might’ve even presented one of their concerts this year. The Best New Bands Artists list is not a year-end list. But our 2024 In Review package is just around the corner, so you’ll probably be seeing some of these names again soon enough.
And now we present you with Stereogum’s 40 Best New Artists Of 2024, listed in alphabetical order. Below that you’ll find playlists on Spotify and Apple Music highlighting the honorees. —Abby Jones

albumoftheyear has it's 2024 banner green because I suspect they expect BRAT to win AOTY but it's funny how none of the list counted so far have helped pushed it anywhere near the top 50.

A few ILM pop elite were definitely in on it last year and it made it to #56 on the top 77 albums list which disqualifies it from appearing this year but it would have very likely made it way higher if nommed this year. I still expect some songs to make it to the tracks poll this year.

Yeah, that's a good track. When I interviewed her she said it wasn't even going to be on the album at first — it's been her set closer for a year or two and she wanted to keep it special, something you could only hear at the gigs, but friends convinced her to record it.

Gilles Peterson AOTY choice
Daughter of a Templeby ganavyahttps://ganavya.bandcamp.com/album/daughter-of-a-temple
Described by the Wall Street Journal as “one of modern music’s most compelling vocalists,” New York-born and Tamil Nadu-raised singer and multi-instrumentalist ganavya shares an ambitious new album, "Daughter of a Temple", via LEITER. The album follows her performance at SAULT’s acclaimed live debut in London in 2023, where, according to The Guardian, her “voice had a delicate emotive heft that could turn stoics into sobbing wrecks.” Her first single for LEITER, "draw something beautiful," was released earlier this year in July.
For "Daughter of a Temple", ganavya invited over 30 artists from various disciplines to a ritual gathering in Houston. Consequently, the album features numerous contributors, including renowned musicians such as esperanza spalding, Vijay Iyer, Shabaka Hutchings, Immanuel Wilkins, and Peter Sellars. The results—an innovative and deeply moving blend of spiritual jazz and South Asian devotional music—were initially recorded by Ryan Renteria and then further edited and mixed by Nils Frahm at LEITER's studio in Berlin in 2024.credits

Expert Witness is in, and Brad seems happy:
While the results aren’t statistically representative of the opinions of anybody other than the people who voted in it, once you scroll down a bit they do give a sense of the breadth of good music in the world: South African gqom or is it 3-step; K-pop from the margins and right down the middle; all manner of sacred and profane Brazilian music; Nordijazz weird and weirder; and Slut SZN. The one clear weakness relative to American consumption is the lack of Spanish-language music (Hinds notwithstanding); I’ll think about what gerrymandering I can do to remedy this (let a year of Bzrp Sessions count as an EP maybe.)Maybe the most surprising fact about this year’s top ten albums was not that they were by acts led by women or non-binary artists, it’s that I didn’t notice this until voter Boris Palameta pointed it out to me...Okay, one more reason this poll is good. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess being near or at the top of a bumper crop of albums by pop women (depending on how you split credit between Charli and her marketing team) was one of the stories of the music year. (Others: folkies are back and some of them are good; you can often make out the lyrics of songs again, and some people are even listening to them...

Not a fan myself, but Teddy Swims "Los Control" was a huge hit in 2024 in US and UK (mentioned above in Top 20 Songs on Apple Music UK)
Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” becomes the first song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to spend triple-digit weeks on the chart, as it adds its milestone 100th frame on the ranking (dated July 26, 2025).
Now Billboard has changed its rules -
