Thanks, TRG. Maybe there’s something else the collected knowledge on this thread can help with: The Legion of Superheroes. The only hint I found is this link, to a playlist on the site of the “joke” classical guy, Peter Schickele/PDQ Bach!
http://www.schickele.com/cgi-bin/playlist.pl?program=11

He lists two tracks, no date: CERF/FRITH/WINTER: “The Great Name Dropper (Part 1)”, The Legion of Super Heroes, AMY 971 (45 rpm) and CERF/FRITH/WINTER: “The Great Name Dropper (Part 2)”, The Legion of Super Heroes, AMY 971 (45 rpm)

Looks like The Legion of Superheroes may not be a band name, but the name of an album. Maybe the person who posted the one track we have has more hints? I’m stumped.

biscuit, Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

That's listed by 'composer', not Artist.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 9 January 2006 09:20 (twenty years ago)

didn't someone read out Frith's name during the documentary? i remember hearing names i didn't know from the list.

(ah, yes, michael palin about 3:15 minutes in, "Mike Frith and Chris Cerf")

koogs (koogs), Monday, 9 January 2006 10:59 (twenty years ago)

another couple of hits for "the great name dropper"

for sale here: http://worldofgramophones.com/45rpm27.html ($10.50)

track of same name by 'Harvard Lampoon'?:
http://www.usenet.com/newsgroups/rec.music.dementia/msg00496.html

http://www.avistic.demon.co.uk/playlists/2001/05.txt - look at Feb 1st show at the bottom - chock full of things from the box.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 9 January 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

christopher cerf did music for the muppets and sesame street. michael frith was also part of the jim henson creative team. don't know about winter. "great name dropper" was probably some one-off single as legion of superheroes.
and, by the way, he did say "clarence frogman henry" twice.

morris, Monday, 9 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, I've completed adding dates for all the tracks into the spreadsheet (the one from upthread- thanks to the original author!). I found it a really cool experience to listen to the box in a semblance of chron order.
http://s61.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1MCI1RUT8YOBV3UWC97GYMNSPC

(Caveat: It's not authoritative -- some of the added dates are estimates, all depend on possibly erroneous info from the web, and a couple resist dating entirely -- but it's something.)

biscuit, Monday, 9 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I have now got about 50 of the vinyl singles from the box. Would anyone like to post the latest want's list A & B sides. I have a feeling that the Roshell Anderson B side is wanted but most of the singles I have, we have.

keefus (keefus), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

keefus - you need those as mp3s? converting is pretty easy - there are dozens of free downloads that will do it in a second. but if for some reason you're not able to do that i'll repost them as mp3s after the weekend.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)

hey trg
i'd love those as mp3s but what would you recommend as a converter?

keefus (keefus), Friday, 13 January 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone sharing these on Slsk? The torrent files don't work for me...

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 13 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Is it safe to write off the alleged Yami Bolo b-side? The single really doesn't seem to have one...

C. O'Leary (jparker), Saturday, 14 January 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

OK -

I have done all new torrents on a reliable tracker... I'm pretty sure these should work this time...

Ok,

It seems my next jobs are:
To convert Mighty Avengers & G L Crockett to MP3.
Upload Roshell Anderson.

Clefs of Lavender hill is on it's way from the US.

Bob Robinson (rob1nson), Saturday, 14 January 2006 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Rock. That torrent works! I'm downloading! Thanks much.

Bob, if it's a problem for you to convert wma to mp3, I will happily do it and YSI the files once the torrent's downloaded.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 15 January 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

Hi Colonel,

That would be appreciated.

Regards

Bob

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Is part 3 not going right now either? Fuckin' hell.. I've been having some trouble with the firewall, but it *should* be working.. Everything says it's working....

s2bdoo (s2bdoo), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 18:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah sasha caro is definitely coming. it shouldn't be too long but don't hold your breath. here are a few more of the missing tunes - clefs of lavender hill, the big three and ken colyer's jazzmen - the correct ep this time. thought i had better do those to keep you sweet, just in case keefus and patita decide to pay me a visit armed with baseball bats demanding the sasha caro record.

matt hodge, Thursday, 19 January 2006 05:17 (twenty years ago)

keefus (keefus), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

which was the a-side of the ken colyer ep?

whatever (boglogger), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:49 (twenty years ago)

yeah, matt--we prefer gentle nudging to assault!
Besides, we're inclined to think that you rock for bringing us some of the hardest to locate songs!

The Ken Colyer A side is If I Cease to Love/Bucket Got A Hole In It. Wildcat Blues / Wabash Blues is the B side.

patita (patita), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

First off, thanks to R. Knewit for assembling this whole thread into a convenient torrent. And on that note, there's three of us johnny-come-lately's cooling our heels in a swarm, our faces longingly pressed up to the window looking in -- speaking on behalf of my fellow leechers, we'd love a seeder to return to the torrent. If anyone's still got it sitting on their hard drive... Thanks!

B. Moon, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:41 (twenty years ago)

i am told that the new Napster service has a John Peel's Record Box playlist thing containing White Stripes, Nillson, Big Three, er, more things. nothing we don't have though.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:08 (twenty years ago)

I'll reseed... I just shut down yesterday because it looked like no one had been on for awhile... Later today, it should start back up. ..

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

For the new guys, I dont have the torrent but have all the files on Soulseek P2P program if you are familiar with that. Username is michstoecker

Stoecker, Friday, 27 January 2006 01:40 (twenty years ago)

i've restarted the peeltorrent - the 1,2 & 3 one.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 27 January 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

hi, i just wanted to ask if i could take advantage of this great resource without the use of a torrent? i am on Mac OS 9 and have so far found no way to download them with any application for this OS. thanks in advance for any help anyone can give!

maranth, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

maranth, can you use yousendit.com?

Stoecker, Wednesday, 1 February 2006 03:31 (twenty years ago)

The Yami Bolo B side appears to be a track called "Version", as listed here: http://infoman16.tripod.com/music/jprecbox.htm

Also saw another list (maybe it was the Record Collector list) that had Version listed as well.

patita (patita), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

somehow i have lost "bloody" by the golinski bros! i would be super-happy if somebody could post it up here.

xpost: patita, i wd imagine "version" to be a dub of the A-side; i.e. "[a-side] (version)"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Tracer, that makes a lot more sense than a song called "Version". YSI is giving me errors right now, but I can definitely send Bloody to you.

patita (patita), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

REPOST for Tracer Hand:
Bloody

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 February 2006 19:40 (twenty years ago)

What we need now to reach Peel heaven is for someone to re-torrent those complete Festive Fifty tracks ...

Jon Dennis, Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:13 (twenty years ago)

amen to that, Jon Dennis!

(oh, and Sipho Bhengu)

patita (patita), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Torrent seems dead, can someone please seed?

Harpal (harpal), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:40 (twenty years ago)

(the 1,2,3 torrent)

Harpal (harpal), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 05:43 (twenty years ago)

and more than that, no?? aren't we still missing basically everything is keefus' last post?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 06:05 (twenty years ago)

I wouldn't mind a re-seed either. Please!

Debord (Debord), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 07:50 (twenty years ago)

spent saturday going through all this stuff again and doing things like splitting the Meow tracks, turning the mono tracks into stereo (some programs have trouble burning mono mp3s) and downsampling all the 320kbps tracks (space reasons), taking the long pauses off the beginnings, stuff like that.

anyway, we could do with a better version of 129 Pretty Good Looking For A Girl as the one we have has dreadful compression artefacts (it's on De Stijl so shouldn't be too hard to replace). the aforementioned Meow single is very loud as well, distorts badly, but that's harder to replace.

that infoman link was interesting, especially the bit about the nilsson single being one rather than three.
