Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted/Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain/Wowee Zowee vs Fugazi - Repeater/Steady Diet Of Nothing/In On The Killtaker

Steady Diet is kind of sterile, splitting the difference between the early stuff and Repeater, but it is so impressively tight and the songs are great.

Heh, my indie rock origin story: I bought Repeater + 3 Songs and Trigger Cut+2 the same day during a HS spring break on the Côte d'Azur.

Kill Taker's my fav Fugazi record, maybe not by leaps and bounds, but it's just about perfect.

Since this is not a better live band poll, Pavement (who tbc were great when I saw them a year or two ago).

as i recently mentioned on the 80s thread if ian did all the singing on fugazi albums i would probably own every fugazi album but he doesn't so i own none of them. BUT i did discover the post-Rites of Spring album that Guybrow made and i really like it a lot and it sells for a ton but i am keeping it anyway so there you go i finally get to say something nice about him. that record rules. i wasn't a Rites of Spring fan and i had no idea they did anything cool after they broke up. but, anyway, i love everything pavement ever did and they are very definitely one of my fave guitar bands of the 90s so voting for them is easy.

Fugazi by several billion light years (and I like Pavement)

Sebadoh never got as big as Pavement but they would be the band I think was on a similar wavelength.

I liked the Grifters better than them both, but liked all three.

Fugazi and the Jesus Lizard were the two best live bands I saw back then. Both of them were just forces of nature.

The variety of awesomeness on that string of 3 by PAVEMENT!

I've probably bored on about this before, but in the UK, I was listening to and worshipping Fugazi from around 1991 but didn't come into contact with Pavement—like, at all. I know maybe three Pavement songs. I'm still waiting for my Pavement phase.

Re: lackadaisical, I often think of Malkmus in Slow Century talking about the Wowee Zowee singles (Rattled by the Rush and Father to a Sister of Thought) as the follow ups to their sort of hit "Cut Your Hair". Paraphrasing, he said, "I was smoking a lot of pot, but they sounded like hits to me."

Both lackadaisical and intense could be positive or negative depending on your orientation toward that type of guy.

I'm enjoying them but I'm not forcing anyone to join in.

Honestly I know Fugazi are a better band. And I like them. But if I had to listen to three albums in a row I’d choose Pavement bc intense men make me uncomfortable in heavy doses.

I do not understand the love for Kill Taker, I mean of course they were one of the best bands on earth when it came out, but there is just not enough space in the sound of that record for me, it is so claustrophobic and full

(I realize that may be what some folks love abt it)

I came back around to Fugazi in a big way when Red Medicine came out, but the two albums between Repeater and that left me unenthused

that rhetoric doesn't work on me, because in the main, much of my fave music is US music. Just not any of this shite.

sorry for the negativity. i just think even if pavement vs fugazi is a mildly interesting question that says something about you, the 'first three albums' thing feels very arbitrary. especially for these 2 bands! they have almost eerie symmetry of a similar amount of music over mostly the same time period! like, fugazi means a lot more to me overall, but i'd have to vote for pavement here mainly because they peaked early.

It was slim is an alien that came up with the 1st three album thing but I thought it was a great different idea and ran with it. I decided to expand it out from just being SST bands.
I was going to do Orbital vs Underworld next but since a new album just came out I prob won't bother as I assume everyone would rather discuss that.

Anybody is free to run their own if the subjects are not to their tastes.
