and all their extra-musical tabloid stuff was constant for years too.

Pearl Jam wasn’t the biggest band in the US either? They were second banana to Nirvana in their own scene, Metallica were bigger for the ‘90s overall.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:01 (one year ago)

Pearl Jam's US sales over 91-93 were bigger than Nirvana's

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:03 (one year ago)

they didn't turn hundreds in the US press into gibbering idiots

i think this is an important point. often I'm bewildered by UK reactions to various things (music, but also societal shit) and it always comes back to press and how it's portraying the importance of stuff. the US didn't have that, at least for music, in those years. I can see having the music press shove something in your face over and over again telling you it's fooking brilliant all the time would rouse a reaction.

omar little, Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:04 (one year ago)

PJ still sell out stadiums in the US.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:07 (one year ago)

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:07 (one year ago)

I went to college in rural Minnesota in the early 90s it was Pearl Jam mania. No one was listening to Black Crowes.

Bad Bairns (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:28 (one year ago)

People liked Nirvana but Pearl Jam dominated the dorms and people’s brain space.

Bad Bairns (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:29 (one year ago)

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:47 (one year ago)

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:49 (one year ago)

i actually bought the second pearl jam record because it was like five bucks on vinyl new. nobody was buying vinyl. i played it once. not my kinda thing. that year i was all about exile in guyville/suede/very/red house painters/heartwork. in connecticut! i moved back there from philly because i was so depressed. then after a couple of years i moved back to philly.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 02:55 (one year ago)

I wasn't the one who started talking shit about where you come from.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 03:29 (one year ago)

feel free to though. connecticut blows.

it just sounded snowy and dark. i'm sure minnesota is lovely though!

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 03:31 (one year ago)

everyone huddled around the dorm cd player in their flannel. letting the grunge warm them up on cold nights.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 03:35 (one year ago)

w.m.a. on said second pearl jam album has more in common with good madchester (the can-loving stuff) than the oasis

you can see me from westbury white horse, Thursday, 29 August 2024 03:39 (one year ago)

xpost skot please don't condescend to me or where I grew up, thanks. again, I didn't start any shit with you.

Goo Goo Dolls, if they'd broken up, were my first thought.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 29 August 2024 04:44 (one year ago)

sorry i didn't know where you grew up i wasn't directing that at you just listening to pearl jam in the early 90s sounded dullsville to me not so much the place although i do think of snowy cold winters when i think of minnesota. and pearl jam are boring. and it was out there in the rural! but i do apologize. it won't happen again. i forget sometimes that people like where they grew up.

xxxpost

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 04:49 (one year ago)

"and you were clinically depressed"

also i have suffered from depression most of my life. for the record. and i didn't even need pearl jam to get like that. but you can make fun of it. i don't care. you probably didn't know that about me! we don't always know everything about everyone.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 04:53 (one year ago)

Lads lads.

Wish I was listening to Sun City Girls more than most of the nonsense I was back in the mid 90s, but you got to make your mistakes!

it's highly doubtful anyone in Oasis has ever heard a Funkadelic album

Noel Gallagher on his song, "The Right Stuff".

"That started with a previous project I did with Amorphous Androgynous that’s never come out. It was gonna be a B-side until the song developed over a couple of days when I suddenly thought “this is fucking amazing, we’ve gotta put this on the album” and drafted in a sax player. The guitars remind me a bit of Funkadelic, you know, that Maggot Brain guitar solo. And obviously there’s these discordant Sun Ra jazz things in there, and it’s got a melody and it’s great. I’m glad you like it."

― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 bookmarkflaglink

Given that Oasis were on creation records, they loved Stone Roses, came from that period in Manchester etc. they would've been open to quite a lot of stuff. Of course they heard Funkadelic, but it wouldn't have cone through in their music, partly because they weren't good enough or were that obsessed with it.

And the stuff they were good at caught a wave that ppl bought into, sold lots of records, turned them into 'rock star' dickheads blah blah.

They incorrectly quoted Isaac Newton for an album title

Noel diagnosed himself as dyslexic when questioned on this fwiw

the most frustrating thing about his regression to perma-kayfabe (apart from scrapping the FSOL/AA LP) was going in a decade from enthusing to a music mag that the first two Hip Hop Don’t Stop comps were two of the best 5 albums of the year, to whinging from his mansion that Jay-Z shouldn’t be allowed to play Glastonbury

Pearl Jam could play their instruments and experimented quite a lot with style and genre following Ten. Oasis rarely swayed away from the formula, even when they were trying to get creative.
PJ were practically an art band compared to Oasis. And no. I don't think they hit the mainstream zeitgeist the same way, even in the US.

Did you refer to their American or UK peak? Because...

Four days in a row now Oasis are mentioned in the main Radio 4 news bulletin, this time because they added some extra dates. Inescapable.

UMS I went to St. Olaf. NB at that time I was into Happy Mondays, 808 State, and anything WaxTrax! I never owned a PJ album, didn’t have to, everyone else was playing it.

So here’s some grist for the mill from writer Anna Doble about young women around the world who are hyped fans for the reunion and I really do suggest giving this a read in full.

xp thanks, that was a good read, very directly comparable to what's happened in the Pulp fan community since the reunion last year, loads of new young fans, mostly seem to be really sound people, mainly congregate on Twitter.

OTOH there's still people like this guy

Imagine waiting 15 years for Oasis to reform only to lose out on tickets to Chloe, 21 from Stockport who just wants to hear Wonderwall live. #oasisreunion

Imagine hating women so much you have to invent them whole cloth just to hate them more.

They haven’t even been broken up that long.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 17:07 (one year ago)

So Morrissey’s claim that he accepted an offer for a Smiths reunion but Marr didn’t: true, or just him wanting attention?

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Thursday, 29 August 2024 18:33 (one year ago)

I think he (Morrissey) is getting desperate. He apparently has two completed records that no label wants to touch and he allegedly doesn't want to self-release anything, so I tend to think both are true. He's desperate enough to ask but also anticipated Marr saying no, but he could still milk a new press cycle out of it.
