would rather listen to creed than oasis

he/him hoo-hah (map), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 21:49 (one year ago)

i can never follow any uk politics stuff so this is the first time i've felt real sympathy for uk ilxors in a while. for me it'll pretty much be ignoring this thread and skipping past the occasional mention on facebook.

What is the US version of Oasis? Matchbox 20? Collective Soul or something?

omar little, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 21:58 (one year ago)

None of those acts had Oasis' album and singles success.

I seem to recall Chuck Klosterman thought the US Oasis was Skynnrd.

Black Crowes

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:11 (one year ago)

if Pearl Jam has broken up instead of touring consistently I would expect the mania would be similar in the US

I think you're right

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:15 (one year ago)

The other bands mentioned weren't big enough.

Also Alfred otm. I saw a v cute video of Pete today being asked about his views on oasis when was like 17. I can't rememvwr what he said but he quoted u eco.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:17 (one year ago)

Thanks tho Omar. Gonna have Shine a light in my head for the next week.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:18 (one year ago)

it's highly doubtful anyone in Oasis has ever heard a Funkadelic album

Noel Gallagher on his song, "The Right Stuff".

"That started with a previous project I did with Amorphous Androgynous that’s never come out. It was gonna be a B-side until the song developed over a couple of days when I suddenly thought “this is fucking amazing, we’ve gotta put this on the album” and drafted in a sax player. The guitars remind me a bit of Funkadelic, you know, that Maggot Brain guitar solo. And obviously there’s these discordant Sun Ra jazz things in there, and it’s got a melody and it’s great. I’m glad you like it."

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:18 (one year ago)

Obviously the guy's a dick but that doesn't necessarily mean that he hasn't listened to some good music every now and then.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:19 (one year ago)

it really has to be PJ, because it has to be tied to the 90s, rock's last period of mainstream, wide culture success with a new musical movement, and it has to be tied to the defining movement of that period (grunge here, Britpop there) . and it has to be a band that was huge at the time, and it has to be the most classic rock oriented/dad friendly version of said movement. PJ meets all the same criteria as Oasis.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:19 (one year ago)

lol ok well in that case I blame Richard Ashcroft

xp

famous instagram dog (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:19 (one year ago)

I mean he's recorded with the Chemical Brothers and Goldie, he's not Rick Parfitt.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:21 (one year ago)

and now yes I notice the "I see you and you see me" from "Wonderboy" is similar to the "I'll be you and you'll be me" line in "She's Electric" good call on that one. Still, "No Compute"... I don't hear it.

My fault, sorry, i'm just glad it's not "december"

omar little, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:30 (one year ago)

cokehead musicians can become quite adept at talking pretentious bullshit imo and making highfalutin illusions to what influenced them. the words mean nothing when you measure them next to the garbage music they made

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:35 (one year ago)

sorry meant allusions

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:38 (one year ago)

As the entire recorded output of Bobby Gillespie proves only too well.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 22:39 (one year ago)

Rick Parfitt's worked with Scooter! In a sense

Do we reckon the phrase "Don't Look Back In Anger" is nicked from John Osborne's play, the film version with Richard Burton, or the Bowie song? Have been assuming the Bowie, but still odd to think of Noel listening to Lodger.

This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 23:01 (one year ago)

my guess is he internalised these lines and phrases he read from the music press in the 80's and reused them without any context or thought. Not saying this would be bad practise, but just that in this case it sucked shit.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 23:12 (one year ago)

even many Smash Hits reviews were brainy and full of cross cultural references back then. it was a confusing period for Noel.

vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 23:19 (one year ago)

those first two suede albums and the singles that went with them slay oasis for me. oasis wish! so much better.

scott seward, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 23:24 (one year ago)

They incorrectly quoted Isaac Newton for an album title

Bad Bairns (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 23:52 (one year ago)

>those first two suede albums and the singles that went with them slay oasis for me. oasis wish! so much better.

Yeah with Oasis I can't get over that initial reaction of "really, is THIS what you're all losing your shit over?"

Cognosc in Tyrol (emsworth), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 23:57 (one year ago)

i think you have to be a tosser/geezer/punter or whatever to really get it.

i know a guy where i live who still has that haircut because he is such a fan. so weird.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:16 (one year ago)

What is the US version of Oasis? Matchbox 20? Collective Soul or something?

Would have to be an act that so represented the state of the nation they were invited to the White House, in the way Oasis were (probably reluctantly on Blair's part) admitted to 10 Downing St. Would that be John Denver?

I spoke quietly, with a falling intonation (Matt #2), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:41 (one year ago)

i don't want to hear a bunch of bullshit about this when it's Pearl Jam

no one gives a fuck about Collective Soul, Pearl Jam still regularly sells out basketball and hockey arenas

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:48 (one year ago)

pearl jams government moment would be the Ticketmaster hearings, but they are actually good dudes not dickheads like Oasis

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:49 (one year ago)

Black Crowes were huge, throwbacks, and hateful terrible brothers, just saying.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:50 (one year ago)

they weren't even close to the level of Pearl Jam and I was there, please

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:56 (one year ago)

there is zero way they are selling out a 20,000 k venue now which Pearl Jam just did in my city

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:57 (one year ago)

also the thing is it's not being a throwback it's about being part of the new thing but classic friendly

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:57 (one year ago)

Noel decided to drop the equipment used in the three previous albums and instead buy "loads of really weird pedals, old guitars, and small amps" as the lack of a deadline on the album allowed him to "take quite a few days just messing around" and experiment with new musical landscapes.[6]

Oasis & the Crowds toured together: Yes, or did I hallucinate that?

Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 29 August 2024 00:59 (one year ago)

I think Creed is a more apt comparison (big, loud, relentlessly self-mythologizing, popular with idiots), but what makes the Pearl Jam analogy work is media complicity. The press hated Creed.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:05 (one year ago)

The Black Crowes had a Billboard #1 album and multiple #1 singles.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:05 (one year ago)

maybe the Black Crowes do kinda line up...two hit albums followed by an off-putting third. The Crowes doing a Stonesy thing vs Oasis doing the Beatles.

omar little, Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:07 (one year ago)

PJ were even bigger but the Black Crowes were a legitimately huge band. It’s splitting hairs on that point.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:08 (one year ago)

so dumb

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:09 (one year ago)

pearl jam ended up being good though, or at least not conservative chauvinist blowhards. they were definitely classic rock but not nationalistic about it. the neil young obsession especially felt kind of expansive and inspired. idk maybe i'm being too generous. they were definitely bloated and heavy at their worst. oasis were so constipated and self-serious about their uk rock heritage. their vibe is more like dumb billy joel to me idk. though now that i think about it, yeah, pearl jam are actually a pretty good analog, i just like pj and hate oasis haha.

he/him hoo-hah (map), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:10 (one year ago)

10 sold 13 million, Vs and Virology sold 7 million

Shake Your Money Maker sold 5
Southern Harmony sold 2 million

this is not comparable

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:14 (one year ago)

Both are huge. Black Crowes are still touring 8-10k places despite being uncool now.

Pearl Jam were bigger but otherwise the Black Crowes line up better with Oasis - style, vibe, career and personal arcs.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:22 (one year ago)

And yes, they toured together.

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 29 August 2024 01:22 (one year ago)

black crowes were more of a southern us thing yeah? they definitely weren't big in my neck of the woods.
