pearl jam sound like shit. theres no more overrated dud vocalist in rock
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac),
You're saying in a thread about Liam Gallagher?

Liam 'my voice is shot' Gallagher.
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 12:07 (one year ago)
id say in on a thread about chrissie hynde!
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 12:07 (one year ago)
He used to have a great voice tbf but Eddie Vedder still better. Its just unfortunate that everyone copied them both so they weren't unique anymore.
I saw Oasis 3 times back in the mid 90s, they were great. Don't need to see them again, especially as anything after the 1st album and bsides I have no interest in.

Nails on a blackboard voice.
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 12:10 (one year ago)
anyway
wouldnt attend gigs, i tend to agree theyll be shite and while what ive heard of liam live was actually better than id have expected considering the state he was in as a live vocalist pretty much immediately after knebworth id still imagine he wont be any better than ian brown was when i paid to see that mess live a decade ago
and no real interest in anything after morning glory anyway
lest i be taken for actually supporting the effort here, like
― tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 12:10 (one year ago)
id guess that was at the concert for manchester? he wasnt too bad then, no idea now

I was a big fan in '94-96 snd I don't know why I didnt go see them in Cork in '96. I had no interest in seeing them later on, given that they had ceased to be good. Not worth the money or bother to see them this time around either.

Back in about 1997 my dwindling loyalty to buying Melody Maker on a weekly basis finally ebbed to a cinder after trudging through a gig report on the first show of the Oasis tour, in support of their fly-ridden elephant turd of a new album. It was in Scandinavia somewhere as I recall? Anyway the journo was all "thank you kind sirs, glad to be of service for your magnificent new offering and the cash-raking powers thereof". I realised once and for all that the weekly music press had been made completely redundant by the success of these twats and had no useful purpose now that 'alternative' music had become the mainstream.
I do like the idea of Tony Carroll trying to hold his own at a stadium gig though, shame it won't be happening.

oasis are just a kinda frustrating band because they had plenty of moments of brilliance but seemingly had no idea what made the best bits of definitely as good as they are
dreaming of a world in which noel going mad with overdubs on be here now instead produced a siamese dream
― ufo, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 12:42 (one year ago)
I genuinely don't think I realized how much people liked them. They always seemed meh to me musically and just incredibly cheesy in every other way. Idk. Obviously I know all the singles (and am also now angry that they're in my head) but I don't think I realized just how big they were. Maybe it's because at the time I was in the US and now I'm in the UK who knows.

― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 13:10 (one year ago)
Much as I hate Oasis can we avoid any mention of Eddie Vedder or Pearl Jam and shite US rawk bands in general. The situation is bad enough
― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 13:16 (one year ago)
Jesus Lizard were good.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 13:26 (one year ago)
Oasis? I think you mean OH-ARSE-IS
― I spoke quietly, with a falling intonation (Matt #2), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 13:29 (one year ago)
I saw Jesus Lizard in London in '95. Then got run over in Pimlico and miraculously only got a fractured tibia and minor head injuries. It was god's way of warning me that US rock music is bad as well!

Simon Price wasn't as caustic about Oasis in the early days. If Oasis killed UK rock, it was only because they got zero pushback from the music press in general
― Saxophone Of Futility (Michael B), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 13:47 (one year ago)
the twitter memeification of Liam as an hilarious character is just so dull. The guy is in his 50's and learned to tone down the racism/homophobia for his posting, but still an ignorant charmless cunt stuck in some ugly persona he adopted in the 90's.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 13:59 (one year ago)
and describing the then Labour leader, Ed Miliband – yes, Ed Miliband – as a “fucking communist” in 2015 and later Jeremy Corbyn in similar terms.
Oasis called Corbyn a fucking communist and Simon Price called him a fucking anti-semite ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 14:07 (one year ago)
fucking hell, did he?
― This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 14:19 (one year ago)
oh yeah, he considered Corbyn an antisemite and posted this more than a few times iirc

think you might have mixed him up with someone else? he was pretty consistently pro-Corbyn and the only thing I could find relating to anti-semitism was this:
Essentially...Hodge: "Acknowledge that there's been a problem with the handling of anti-semitism complaints. ACKNOWLEDGE!"Corbyn: "I acknowledge that, and here's what I plan to do..."Hodge: "OH MY GOD! SO YOU ADMIT IT! I'M TAKING THE TAPE TO THE PAPERS!"The state of her.— Simon Price﮷ (@simon_price01) April 14, 2019

shit, I'm mixing him up with another music hack.. apologies Simon

I was about to say, I don't remember THAT. (Simon and I have been FB friends for a while and we met up in 2018, so call me biased but yeah...that would have been out of character!)
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 14:48 (one year ago)
could be.. I just remember seeing some performatively left-wing music journo calling him an antisemite and my brain turned him into Simon Price

take your pick tbh

I loved the Kulkarni clip but refuse to listen to that podcast as one of the other regularish contributors is an abuser, or at least has been an abuser, cannot write any details on a public forum but it seems to be an open secret and just do not get why he is still in the gang.
― This is Dance Anthems, have some respect (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 14:54 (one year ago)
and now people will be speculating on who it is (never heard that story before btw so cant be that much of an open secret) and it will be unfair on them.
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 15:36 (one year ago)
Kulkarni is funny but it felt like flogging the point. Maybe that's just me and podcasts. The tweet does it briefly and better.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 15:36 (one year ago)
xp sure, of course, but what's the alternative, I just ignore it?

Yeah I find that podcast err a bit joyless to listen to personally, regardless of who's on it. It's just a me and podcasts thing.
― you can see me from westbury white horse, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 15:40 (one year ago)
The guy who hosts that podcast is an old mate of mine from Nottingham days - we still see each other from time to time - and he has a strong moral compass, so that open secret thing above has weirded me out. I've been listening devotedly for years, love it dearly, and it even inspired me to start my own (about which my mate the host has been very supportive).

Most Oasis discourse is flogging the point. Oasis themselves are about flogging the point.

That Simon Price piece is excellent, BTW. And if you want to hear Kulkarni dishing out another righteous evisceration, this time to The Smiths, it's on the most recent episode of that podcast, all of which is a tribute to Neil; the Smiths rant was actually included at my suggestion, as it happens.

There was a really creepy thing on the Chart Music social media where some lad was joking about pretending to a member of Menswear to get laid, and instead of being weirded out by the implications of uninformed consent they re-posted this lad's comment as if it was "top banter" or whatever, really gave me the ick tbh
