I think they should hire Bez to dance on stage.
― StanM, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 14:52 (one year ago)
xp I'm a fan of the first couple of 'new' ones but the last one I wasn't feeling. Might give it another go.
― kinder, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 14:52 (one year ago)
xps well hype aside it was literally a recreation of fairly bland 60s British pop. Funny if Jesus Lizard was the expectation over in the US (Jess, formerly of this parish, tweeted something similar the other day)
― xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 14:53 (one year ago)
It does have that sheen of loud guitars over every non-ballad track which 60's pop does not and which could perhaps trick ppl into thinking it's closer to the stuff matt cited than it is.
When they first appeared on totp reruns I did think "this does sound quite distinctive and not like anything else on the show at the time"; it also sounded boring and shit, to be clear.
― Daniel_Rf, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 15:00 (one year ago)
Yeah there are some updates (the sheen is v similar to Band of Susans, a NY art rock outfit). 'Attitudes' and fashions are ofc updated but ultimately there wasn't much doubt what this was mining.

yeah it wasn't so much like everything had to be jesus lizard it was just the breathless hype then i saw them live on mtv and it was like "oh...ok"

Funny how this reunion has happened not long after Noel Gallagher announced his latest divorce. Ian Brown did a similar thing getting The Stone Roses back together after a costly divorce a decade ago.― kitchen person, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 14:08 (one hour ago) link

Saw elsewhere that a tour itinerary leaked last night or early this morning, was dismissed as fake but the UK/Ireland dates proved true.
These were the North America dates from the previously dismissed as fake itinerary:24 August 2025: Downsview Park, Toronto, ON27 August 2025: Soldier Field, Chicago, IL30 August 2025: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ2 September 2025: Gilette Stadium, Boston, MA6 September 2025: Rose Bowl, Los Angeles, CA11 September 2025: Foro Sol, Mexico City
Maybe I'm way underestimating demand here, but I can't imagine Oasis filling up Soldier Field.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 17:19 (one year ago)
I can see the US east coast having enough dumb assholes with no taste to make two stadium shows viable (NJ and Boston well chosen venues), but yeah, the Midwest might be a tougher market for this garbage barge of lobotomized 90s nostalgia.
― Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 17:39 (one year ago)
I feel like U.S. Oasis fans are less "dumb assholes" than "creative directors nostalgic for their '94 year abroad."

honestly i don't even think it's as fancy as all that, it's the same people who are filling up foo fighters, green day, weezer shows, etc...it's just classic rock for people who listen to alt rock radio growing up

Plus millennials really love "Wonderwall"
― Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 17:57 (one year ago)
Also: how much touring did they do in America, and where did they play? It's not the best metric, but I checked setlist.fm for Houston shows, and they played here three times: a club show in '95, and shows in '98 & '06 at a theatre downtown that can hold 3000 or so.
― Charlie Hair (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 18:03 (one year ago)
They did a reasonable amount of touring compared to some, but bustups and fuckups did grind a few tours to a halt.

Good chance this could be canceled too.

Pearl Jam was and is way more interesting than Oasis ever was, sorry.
― the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 27 August 2024 23:29 (one year ago)
I hate them too and I'm so tired of hearing about this already, yet here I am posting about it.
I'm all about the peace and love but have for decades had a massive latent desire to punch Liam in the face. I am somewhat acquainted with the singer in Nowaysis so maybe I could come to some arrangement for him to be my surrogate Liam punchbag?
― stirmonster, Tuesday, 27 August 2024 23:30 (one year ago)
I would go see them with a free ticket. I liked the cokehead insanity of the first What's The Story Morning Glory follow-up single where the video starts out with a helicopter.

Foo Fighters being the most popular ongoing relic of the grunge era and not Pearl Jam is a major indictment of the taste of that generation, but it's also not very surprising.

Foo Fighters fanbase skews younger than Pearl Jam, it's weird to encounter young people for whom Dave Grohl is the guy from Foo Fighters not Nirvana

yeah I'm saying they have way more under 40 and younger fans, so I wouldn't call the FF a Gen X exclusive thing as much as PJ (addressing Omar's point)
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 01:20 (one year ago)
It makes sense. Grohl has done so much shit big and small outside of music that cumulatively gets them much more attention - off the top of my head, appearing on popular cooking shows, refusing to license his music to Glee which made some waves, his own TV shows about various things, his book, rickrolling right wing nuts, etc. - while PJ seems to mostly stick with music. I can't say those are good reasons why they're more popular, it just is.
― birdistheword, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 01:41 (one year ago)
Neil Kulkarni sussed them from the fucking beginning.
Neil's writing at the time on them is absolutely amazing; here's a good seven-minute going in via the Chart Music podcast in recent times:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiMnUBFbQJg
Among the eight million reasons I wish he was still around: he would have hated this news but boy would he have had things to say.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 01:44 (one year ago)
LMAO, that was a brutal takedown. The factory-damaged jeans remark remind me of what Iggy Pop told Elvis Costello in another lockdown-era interview:
Iggy Pop: When I heard your music, I felt like you were the only thing coming out of the U.K. that wasn’t going along with the I’m-a-monster-with a-guitar-riff thing. The whole guitar riffage was going up and up and up. You were either that or, no offense to her, you were Lulu...you were either doing schlock or you were doing this thing that every six months was getting more stupid and dull. Being English, you know about this — when you don’t have much money, you save the tea bag for a second squeeze. That’s how rock was getting at that time. You came up with something different.
― birdistheword, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 02:52 (one year ago)
Neil Kulkarni OTM not only about Oasis but about everything else there.
― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 06:26 (one year ago)
"a celebration of stupidity and conservatism" is indeed correct. It's very depressing to live in a degenerate country where regressive, ignorant, artless morons like this reforming is considered one of the major events of the year. It was bad enough living through this garbage the first time.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 06:54 (one year ago)

oasis are a societal ill on par with southern water pumping shit into our waterways, of course we should be protesting this
― Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 08:05 (one year ago)
Kulkarni linking them with Tommy Robinson and the reduction of the working class to boorish racist homophobic stereotypes is spot on. Of course none of that matters if you don't actually have to live here.
― Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 08:08 (one year ago)
otm. What happened to cancel culture anyway? is it just because all the racist/homophobic comments they've made over the years are just not blatantly offensive enough.
― vodkaitamin effrtvescent (calzino), Wednesday, 28 August 2024 08:10 (one year ago)
There is no way I will listen to Pearl Jam as a substitute to Oasis. I want no subs I want this stuff to be burned from the earth.
― xyzzzz__, Wednesday, 28 August 2024 08:15 (one year ago)
I have friends who love Oasis and are excited about this reunion, and I'm very much not telling them that Oasis are shit and they shouldn't be excited. But I genuinely cannot stand the group and feel annoyed that I'm going to have to hear about them for the next year. So thank god at least I have this thread to moan about it. Maybe a pro-Oasis thread could be started and I will leave it alone.
