Archtop Tribute, who made my ES-350 clone, have finally 'made good' on their Barney Kessel tribute model, and here it is, and I am staring politely. It's more than double the price of what I paid for my 350 from them. I wish I was in Shibuya right now and could try it out

somewhat recklessly i have bought my guitar-curious 12yo a £150 squier sonic strat. they get great reviews and if nothing i else i can play if he forgets about it someday. my rationalisation went: that’s the price of a nice dinner out for 4, or a pair of new jordans, so why not get something he might actually be creative with

Flamboyant, what does that work out to price wise with shipping? looks very very classy. I wouldn't mind trying out a Charlie Christian pickup someday!

Those thinline teles are awesome. I wish Jaguars sounded better since they're the obviously the coolest looking guitars ever. Fender is pushing those horrid Acoustisonic guitars, they would have been much better off getting a creative acoustic/electric pickup arrangement going in a thinline tele- hidden body sensor, piezo bridge, regular magnetic pickups + all controlled by a 5 way, a la Taylor T5Z or Rick Turner etc- but with the look of a conventional Telecaster. in my extremely humble opinion

Tangentially related, I just noticed there's a 'guitar summit' at Le Poisson Rouge this Saturday.
The show will feature Kurt Rosenwinkel, Nels Cline, Gilad Hekselman, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Mike Stern, Leni Stern, Rodney Jones, Anupam Shobhakar, Camila Meza, and Joel Harrison with Jerome Harris (bass), Harvey Sorgen (drums), Ben Perowsky (drums) performing in solo, duo, and quartet settings. "Expect one-of-a-kind meetings between some of the most storied creative improvisers of our time...This show also serves as the release party for a collection of solo recordings on the AGS Recordings label entitled The Middle of Everywhere: Guitar Solos Vol I: www.alternativeguitarsummit.com"

Squier Paranormal Jazzmaster XIIs are $350 new right now for the white/blue ones.

They have their flaws but the necks on these are worth the price of admission alone ...

*those*those Jazzmaster XIIs
majorairbro, taking a guess at the shipping you'd probably land one of those Barney Kessels in the States for a little under $3500.

I just found a guitar on the street! It's a Samick copy of a Rickenbacker solid body...The electronics are super grungy but the pickups sound gorgeous... I've got contact cleaner so I'm going to clean the pots, jack and switch, but I'll probly need to replace them...Likely needs a new nut too...It's got a bigsby style tailpiece which I might swap out...It's also a really short scale which is weird... might use it to mess with alternate tunings or something...

I used to browse aluminum neck Kramers as the poor man’s Travis Bean but they’re no longer poor man’s anything. Still look cool though.

might make more sense as a pedal steel with the string switches tied to pedals?

Just a question for people who've played vintage Fenders. I've never played one. What would you say the quality of the neck profile was like? I mean, did it feel smooth/well-executed or was there some weird asymmetrical stuff going on?Do you think they have a different feel to CNC-era neck profiles? Or any advantages?
I'm curious as I know they shaped them freehand on a belt sander back then, so I'm wondering if this method has any advantages. It's quite a different technical process to CNC so I'd be curious if the result is different or in any way preferable.I believe the final sanding is still done by hand, but not the entire neck profile, apart from some of the custom shop models.

I’m not sure when my Fender Strat neck is from, but it’s maple and very heavy, and I was told by the guy who made it (it’s a Frankenstein) that the wood was quartersawed, and thus a more optimal grain direction. It feels maybe 1 mm taller in its circumference, too, to a modern Fender neck, but it’s entirely rounded (that is, not a slight pyramid shape like my old acoustic Martin). It’s remarkably easy to play. The wood feels very similar to the neck of a violin or a cello, and it’s always disappointing to go back to the laminated finish neck of my archtop.

I'm not a big fan of signature models generally, and I truly give zero fucks about Jack Antonoff, but this Gretsch he's launching that's a combo of an old Gretsch Princess and a Jazzmaster is pushing all my buttons. Not a boatload of $$ either (699 USD). If I hadn't just bought a CV Jazzmaster three months ago, I would be all over this.

sorry. well shit, ain't that nice! not (that) shit ain't that nice.
Finally found one of these at a price I could live with - Grass Roots G-T-64B, Tetsuya model. Fiesta red sparkle, 4 string bass styled as a Bass VI, so a Bass IV I guess. Saw one about 10 years ago in Tokyo and have had an itch for one ever since. Hasn't shipped yet but I'm excited.https://i.imgur.com/lUZhOoB.jpeg

I think it might be a bit cheap-feeling (00s, made in China, most of the "plates" are mirror plastic ...) but wasn't too expensive. I'm pretty psyched to hear it.

best part of that Guild is you can swap out that shitty floating trem for a legit (or aftermarket) jazzmaster one.
― Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 October 2024 16:34 (one year ago)
Descendant bridges makes a Jazzmaster bridge swap for Tune-o-Matics so you can save Squier Mascises and other brands from the worst feeling in the world (offset vibrato and TOM)
― papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 17 October 2024 17:55 (one year ago)
(which is definitely not me thinking of finding a used Mascis and putting in noiseless P90s like Sunn O))) and having a Jazzmaster of Doom)
― papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 17 October 2024 17:56 (one year ago)
^ I mean, I endorse this 1000%.
I’ve been flip-flopping between using my 350 clone + Kinman P90 vs. my partscaster with the three Jaguar pickups and the heavy maple neck. The latter is easier to play (I love the natural finish on the neck, feels like a violin), but the sound of that P90 is just impossible to beat. It’s in my top five fave pieces of gear of all time, it sounds absolutely amazing
