Thanks matttkkkk for the tip on the set of strings with a wound G. Just added to my Amazon order at the last minute :)

my collaborator has a CV Jazzmaster and I play it all the time. It's a fantastic guitar for the money. I hate when people say that actually, so shame on me. But comparing to American made ones, it's hard to justify the extra thousand or two, lol. But I'm not a Jazzmaster super fan so I'm sure there's nuance that is lost on me. If it were mine I'd upgrade the pickups but they're not bad at all- especially in the middle position.

A couple years ago I had a Teisco bass shipped to my partner’s sister in Canada. We just visited so I brought it home at last. https://i.postimg.cc/X7r5Z3r4/IMG-5463.jpg

i ordered one of the player II telecasters, i'm excited. i've been playing them at the guitar store and they look and sound great. iirc this will be the first electric guitar that i've owned new.

well, I made a decision. I've been wanting my forever bass for a long time. the dream of a 60s fender died a looong time ago, pricewise, and even the 70s ones now (which people used to say had questionable quality control) are upwards of 3000-4000. I did play a 70s p bass at a store that was great (amazing neck) but then my friend who works there said "hey have you stood up with that? we should get you a strap"...put it on an the thing was like a ton of bricks, my back just couldn't handle doing a show with it on.
so, i found a local guy here, Glory Guitars, he makes custom basses and guitars and they aren't a whole lot more expensive than the Ultra or Pro II Fenders.
I saw this and it was kind of everything I ever wanted, most importantly a Jazz body with a Lindy Fralin P bass pickup (I did look at the Mark Hoppus Fender but it feels overpriced for what it is and the dingus for some reason didn't want to include a tone knob which is a dealbreaker for me)
also it's got this other pickup, a TV Jones Thunderblade, the switch actually isn't a pickup selector, it just puts the Thunderblade in series with the P bass pickup. He calls it the "thump switch", kind of sounds like a "Gibson bass switch" to me, changes the whole character of it. All the parts, etc are absolutely top of the line and I could get everything down the the knobs exactly how I wanted.
the color I selected is an aged Olympic white (he ages the paint to get that great creamy yellow color). It's basically going to look like this but without the relicing stuff, just light aging.

thanks! only downside with a custom build is having to wait. was really a cool experience to talk to a guy and have him do exactly what you want in every detail. and not really that much more than a top of the line new store bought bass.
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 August 2024 16:37 (one year ago)
yeah it seems like if you are confident in what you want there are a lot of very well-regarded custom builders out there who can do great work for very reasonable prices, especially fender-type builds

That is a cool looking bass. RS Guitarworks has a model that is kind of a P Bass meets a Tbird that think looks pretty swell. It has like the Lollar Tbird pickups.

All my electrics are parts guitars at this point. Have not gone that way with my basses. Kind of the nice thing about going that way is you don't really dig it, you can take it apart then use some of the parts to make something else and try again.

thanks! he uses alder - says it should come in around 4 lbs. give or take
that was actually kind of a big factor as i mentioned above, the older i get some of those 70s ones i just don't want to have something that heavy i think the one i tried was around 11 lbs.

earlnash - i love that rs guitarworks bass, kind of a cool hybrid of a bunch of things the tele bass pickguard w/the p bass body and t-bird pickups, looks gorgeous
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 5 August 2024 14:18 (one year ago)
They build a bunch of weird hybrids, like Flying V telecasters etc. They have a gretch/tele hybrid called a rockabilly that is a neat guitar.

i have another kind of oddball one, this I bought on Reverb during Covid, it is by McGibney Guitars, was being sold in a shop from Nashville as a prototype (I've looked on his site and never seen anything like it - he mostly does Fender adaptations, pretty straightforward stuff)
but anyway it seems like....a remake of a bass that never existed in the first place, like if there had been a double cut gretch pro-jet (like what malcom young plays)
the strap there is covering up a "mud" switch that makes the sound really tubby. the upper dial is a volume cutoff like gretch's have

i love it for recording - it's a short scale with flatwounds, playing it with a pick sounds so good. unfortunately not really playable for shows. the body is chambered and incredibly light so the neck dive is out of control.

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 5 August 2024 21:10 (one year ago)
Finally got all my pieces parts and did the changes on my CV Jazzmaster today. These come stock with tort pickguards and snow white plastics. Now it's got a mint pickguard and Fender "aged white" plastics, except for the switch tip which I had to grab on Amazon in "cream" made for Epiphones because it was the only metric shit I could find. Looks okay. Not completely sold yet on the mint pickguard (looks better in this photo, but both the pink and the mint are little more saturated irl). I'll live with it for a while before I decide whether or not to try something else.
Anyway, I love playing with this vibrato. May upgrade that to a proper Fender one at some point too (all those boutique ones are too expensive—yikes!—but there are some Fender ones in the $50-$80 range).

Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace have been dead zones around here for years, I've listed stuff (music gear or otherwise) for way less than Reverb or EBay and had it sit forever, finally listed online and it's gone in a day or two.

yeah i had a really good squier CV jaguar deal up on FB marketplace for nearly 6 months, thought it would be sold within a week. only got a couple inquiries before some kid finally offered a good trade I accepted. i ended up with this squier cv 60s thinkline tele, sherwood green with white bindinghttps://nafiriguitar.com/cdn/shop/products/230718163018_IMG_0427_ori_f39fc529-0c9d-4b4c-ba62-1f7334b858fd.jpg?v=1708490821(not mine pictured)

Archtop Tribute, who made my ES-350 clone, have finally 'made good' on their Barney Kessel tribute model, and here it is, and I am staring politely. It's more than double the price of what I paid for my 350 from them. I wish I was in Shibuya right now and could try it out

somewhat recklessly i have bought my guitar-curious 12yo a £150 squier sonic strat. they get great reviews and if nothing i else i can play if he forgets about it someday. my rationalisation went: that’s the price of a nice dinner out for 4, or a pair of new jordans, so why not get something he might actually be creative with
― Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Monday, 19 August 2024 16:16 (one year ago)
Flamboyant, what does that work out to price wise with shipping? looks very very classy. I wouldn't mind trying out a Charlie Christian pickup someday!

Those thinline teles are awesome. I wish Jaguars sounded better since they're the obviously the coolest looking guitars ever. Fender is pushing those horrid Acoustisonic guitars, they would have been much better off getting a creative acoustic/electric pickup arrangement going in a thinline tele- hidden body sensor, piezo bridge, regular magnetic pickups + all controlled by a 5 way, a la Taylor T5Z or Rick Turner etc- but with the look of a conventional Telecaster. in my extremely humble opinion

Tangentially related, I just noticed there's a 'guitar summit' at Le Poisson Rouge this Saturday.
The show will feature Kurt Rosenwinkel, Nels Cline, Gilad Hekselman, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Mike Stern, Leni Stern, Rodney Jones, Anupam Shobhakar, Camila Meza, and Joel Harrison with Jerome Harris (bass), Harvey Sorgen (drums), Ben Perowsky (drums) performing in solo, duo, and quartet settings. "Expect one-of-a-kind meetings between some of the most storied creative improvisers of our time...This show also serves as the release party for a collection of solo recordings on the AGS Recordings label entitled The Middle of Everywhere: Guitar Solos Vol I: www.alternativeguitarsummit.com"
