Unto Others are swinging for the fences on their new album. They worked with Ghost's producer and have pulled off a slick, goth/metal/pop/rock/punk hybrid: think Gene Loves Jezebel meets Volbeat meets The Killers. 16 tracks, most under four minutes, with hooks everywhere. Gabe knows a good hook, and he leans into it with a sense of abandon that I can't help but applaud. It's goofy at times (if short catchy songs turn you off, stay away) but when a band goes all-in like this, they have to embrace the goofiness and run with it.

Thanks to Phil for the Crystal Viper recommendation! I can't remember the last power metal album that captured that Walls of Jericho/Ample Destruction rawness, speed, and fun that I loved so much in 1985. What an album.

i was wondering how the new Crystal Viper was, hadn't checked it out yet but I've enjoyed previous albums of theirs. going to grab that one.

a few months ago I posted about buying a Terrorizer ticket moments before reading Neanderthal's post about their new line-up of racist Trump fans and born-again Christians. well good news, the gig's been cancelled and I'm getting a refund! not sure if there's a world tour downfall or just this gig

Wormed for sure, Malignancy, Replicant, and I'd probably put Afterbirth in this category. Maybe Vitriol if they were just a little more Anaal Nathrakh-y.

going to see Coffin Mulch/Final Dose/Lavinia Whatelely in a couple of weeks with another ilxor. I only really know Final Dose who are like blackened punk I guess but I thought their demo sounded pretty good. I haven't been very metal lately
― Colonel Poo, Sunday, 21 July 2024 02:01 (one year ago)
Coffin Mulch are good! Tons of great UK death adjacent stuff in last few years. Cryptworm/Slimelord/Gorgon vomit bill in new cross recently was a lot of fun

Really digging The Dry Land, the latest from Chicago quintet Hunstmen. They describe themselves as "American metal and doom", but I really hear a lot of other things in the mix. I was struck by the vocal harmonies and how they approach the vocals, not surprised to see they routinely cite CSNY as an influence (vocally anyway, don't let that scare you off).

I was unfamiliar with the South Carolina band Demiser until today, when I got a promo of their upcoming album Slave to the Scythe (out 8/23). Their first album, Through the Gate Eternal, came out in 2021, and I guess I'd describe it as "what if Al Jourgensen was in Skeletonwitch?" Shreddy, slightly blackened thrash-death with excellent galloping riffs and a goofy "more metal than thou" sense of humor.

lol definitely for you and me, but I fear we might be in the minority in this particular thread. it’s a really good album, it just feels exceedingly rare that a band actually delivers on bringing something unique to doom adjacent metal.

who are running the world re: sci-fi death metal right now?
obvs 1s
blood incantantion - rulers of all things forever, love'em
-
tomb mold - they're clever but they're revealing to be boring formalists too, imo (max´s ex-band abyss, though, was 100% awesome), don't like their new one. + i still think about unperson's twitt which was true fun
gigan - miss them
hypocrisy - haven't heard'em since (???)
innoculation - haven't heard (yet). pure cosmic dread? kinda dig them already, ty
nocturnus ad - ad is not helping him, is it? or maybe not for me, really
i like love siderean. yeah, they dwell and meander way tooo much, see it's suppose to, like long deeep dreeaaaams maaaaan,; and i wish the new one they're dropping september goes higher into the same astral chase or wtv they are going for

New Grand Magus album, Sunraven, coming in October. Here's a video for the first song, "Skybound":

I've been a fan of these guys forever, and was really lucky to see them the (only?) time they toured the US in 2019, with Amon Amarth, At The Gates and Arch Enemy.

trying not to get tickets for Incineration Festival just for the new album playthough by Blood Incantation at the Roundhouse, Camden.
I'll not get tickets, then on that week, I'll suffer the worst FOMO and panic.
£90 to go see a single band though, buuuuut if I'd do that for anyone, its probably the new album from BI.
if the Tangerine Dream dude joined them, that'd be a real crossing the streams moment for me.
― my opinionation (Hamildan), Friday, 26 July 2024 13:17 (one year ago)
i see Spectral Wound just got added too (plus Decapitated)... using 5 venues this time so probably a decent value overall for the £90

Okay, yes, I'm a sucker for Blood Incantation and hyped for the new album. Enough so that I pre-ordered this deluxe version with an artbook, a Blu-Ray documentary about the making of the album, a soundtrack to said documentary and, the clincher for me, getting the Luminescent Bridge EP on CD finally.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 1 August 2024 15:25 (one year ago)
sweet,
I'd only recently found out that Timezone Zero has a DVD with the album + visuals.
I went for the vinyl + t shirt as I have no need for a CD copy, just hope the doc+soundtrack comes out separately.
2 tracks, Hansa Studios, Thorsten Quaeschning guest, this album is gonna ruuule.
― my opinionation (Hamildan), Friday, 2 August 2024 19:15 (one year ago)
Gonna be reviewing the new Blood Incantation at length for The Wire; listening to it for the first time this morning. It's really good so far — the two long tracks are actually divided into thirds, so it's a six-track record, kinda. The first one reminds me of peak mid-'90s Pestilence, roaring death metal with long, weird synth interludes.
― Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Wednesday, 7 August 2024 16:21 (one year ago)
oh, very cool. I was a little worried it'd mostly be synth stuff. nothing wrong with that but I haven't returned to the "all tangerine dream, all the time" one much, generally just go for the real deal when the mood strikes there.
