Just got a replacement copy of the 3cd of the 69 Fillmore West set. Got it when it came out but old copy is a bit worse the wear.
So here is the band with copious amounts of psychedelic jam from right around the time of Live Dead which used other recordings from the same series of gigs and another couple of sources. Songs here have notably different durations to the previously released versions which indicates some looseness as does the actual music itself.
Blooming great and epitomising the band at some of its best. I know August 68 and May 70 are highs I hold for the band, not sure about 69 for a total peak but this is great.

one of several blues sets from this covermounted cd series I picked up recently. Love this one. It has a number of songs that I associate withb the Grateful Dead as set enders as well as a Viola Lee Blues which they covered on their first lp. Music here is energetic and sounds like it ought to come from decades later than its 1927-30 recordings. Definitely sound like archetype line ups for later band formations or however you want to put that. Just thinking prototype ideas for what a band should be, I found listening to Hank Williams Drifting Cowboys and a few others had me thinking similarly. I think jug bands may be filtered through 60s white recreations and wind up sounding more hokey, from the evidence of this they sound like they were far more innovative at the time of recording.
Sound here seems relatively good and listenable. Do wish I had the magazines though. Linernotes are pretty scanty in the cd booklet.

Jazz saxophonist's return lp after a long time practising in the location of the title. He's joined here by guitarist Jim Hall who is pretty outstanding.
I'm less familiar with Rollins' work than I probably ought to be. Have heard bits of it but don't own much. Not sure why.

Stevo if you’re out there — I’m pretty sure it was you who posted in one of these listening threads within the last two years or so about a comp of relatively unknown female-led bands, I think mostly from the ‘80s, playing power-pop/new wave/garage style stuff. I think it had a mostly blue cover? Don’t remember if it was an international comp or focused on one country. Does that sound at all familiar? I remember really liking it but can’t find it now. All of my searches are turning up some recent comps on Ace/Big Beat but I don’t think it’s any of those. Thanks!

I'll have to think re girl fronted band thing. Wouldn't be a covermount thing or something?

Stevo, Friday, 28 June 2024 14:27 (one year ago)

Don’t think it was a covermount, pretty sure it was a commercial release. No worries if you can’t think of it!

Found it! “Heroes of the Night: Punk, Pop and Wave from the U.K. Underground ‘79-‘83.” On Reminder Records. And happily discovered that there’s a Volume II out now too.

I wish it hadn't taken me so long to get around to this. This is like the platonic ideal of an early '80s punk album for me, not just variations of the same song hammered over and over, a pretty good mix of hardcore intensity, melodicism and even things like a synth intro!

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/048ef0d7791e653ef708f8c27a09b52d/9783027
compilation of material by New Orleans r'n'b guitarist/singer. Incorporates what I take to be 2nd line rhythms into his style which adds an element I don't hear in contemporary r'n'b from elsewhere.
I picked this up without being familiar with the artist but am very glad I did so. 2nd hand book/music shop I got it from recently bought up collections from a couple of people who'd collected a load of blues/r'n'b/various roots musics, so I picked up bits of those collections but not really as much as I would have if I had more money on me. Oh well chance element is always interesting. & thanks to a friend for pointing out that the cd I was looking at because it was on Acrobat which a Jesse Fuller set I was actually consciously looking to pick up after not doing so on a previous visit. Jesse Fuller was an artist a guitarist around town had covered a lot when I first got here.
Anyway, one of the best buys I've made in a while cos it is pretty great.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/d8583e65056501991a572670170f4671/6442654
70s blues plus plus group incorporating some 2nd line, country, jazz and a myriad of other influences. Band leader Lowell George had tiny tootsies and great skill with slide guitar which seems to be a feature throughout. Can give some of this music a really psychedelic feel that and the flowing rhythms.
I've been meaning to pick this up for a while but its taken a few months to restock and I didn't grab it last time it was in. So been going in to check if its there and surprise surprise it turns up when I'm feeling broke. But got it anyway and glad I did. Have only had ther 1st s/t lp up til now. Not sure how I managed to get to this point without picking up more.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/32f01ea62595e8d1ea9487c4b8554249/6099222
compilation of old-timey Appalachian banjo player's recordings from the late 20s and early 30s.
I think this came from one of the mainly blues collections I mentioned earlier. Macon is an artist I'm semi familiar with from reading about early country in books like Tony Russell's Country Music Originals.
Pretty raucous party music I guess. Love this stuff. also picked up the Rough Guide to Hillbilly Blues a couple of weeks back. Early country reminds me of the Gun Club, other roots punk and things like Dylan's early acoustic years and the Charlatans since they all contributed to me investigating it. & then I've been slowly picking up bits and pieces for years.

//e.snmc.io/i/300/w/8588acf7e0436b8a26447235c69bbfab/5709756
Welsh heavy trio playing a stoner heavy hard rock before the genre became fully formulaically defined. I have a copy of this on cd that I need to find that I think came out on a hip hop label. So far this is the only one of their lps I have but have heard first 5 lps are great.
I'm having to listen to this one track at a time on Spotify so really should find my physical copy.
There are some pretty odd titles on the record with more prosaic lyrical themes. But Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman doesn't get a further explanation.

the debut album by Divine Styler is very VERY different to anything by New Kingdom.
both are great, but don't get how anyone hears a connection.
yeah, Divine Styler may have drifted into the same world via his brilliant WARPORN INDUSTRIES mixtape,
but his debut is all psych and weird vibes.
