As much as I like most of Albini's recordings worked on, I never once cared for any of his bands. The last time I listened to Atomizer was 39 years ago and tried it again now. Nope - none of it is for me.

If I had to choose between Sinatra's 60s albums on Reprise and his 50s Capitol stuff, I would choose the Reprise era easily.

i'm just glad that albini didn't record spiderland. i love that album and he probably would have albini-ized it with that patented drum sound and wacky studio chatter snippets.

spiderland is totally easy to get. its awesome. the best guitar sounds. best drums. definitely the only thing i ever need to hear from dave pajo but its more than enough! it rewards multiple listens. maybe 300 listens.

Spiderland is obviously awesome but if I'm only allowed one thing from Pajo, it's Live From A Shark Cage all day long.

re: inspired by slint, finding out that jesus lizard song was about slint's drummer flooding albini's house did make me appreciate it a lot more, actually pay attention to the lyrics, when normally i'd only process it as undifferentiated garbled yelling.

i once complimented david yow on his lyrics after a jesus lizard show in the early 90s and he seemed genuinely touched and surprised by that. i had read an interview where he said he didn't care if lyrics were included in their albums and i told him that they should always include them. i was a big fan of those scratch acid songs especially. but also the early jesus lizard stuff. they definitely had an effect on me. i preferred SA and JL southern gothic to nick cave's lyrics which always seemed hammy and removed from dirt somehow. even though i know they - SA and Yow - were influenced by birthday party in a big way.

i like the vocals! they're just kids. i don't really listen to a lot of 90s emo or post-hardcore though. it wasn't my world. i was a huge squirrel bait fan in high school. but that was 1985 grunge post-hardcore. i do love sunny day real estate.

(or at least i am obsessive about how it feels to be something on which i've probably listened to a hundred times since it came out....in fact i think i'll listen to it now...)

i do discover 90s stuff that i like a lot all the time though. things i missed. i've been listening to the breadwinner comp a lot since decibel magazine put it in their hall of fame an issue or two ago. they passed me by. no vocals mostly!

spiderland helped me to realise i really don't like phc much. on paper the album sounds quite awesome but the dry production, that damn guitar tone, the vocals. arghhh

Sunny Day are great, always thought it was weird that they were the one “emo” band where the lead singer tried to sound like a weezy old English ragman instead of a kid pretending to cry or whatever (sorry emo fans)

use of a wah pedal for more than 5 seconds on an album 30 minutes or more in length should result in mandatory jail time
