Also: part of the appeal of Collier, to me, was to attend the concert with the best keyboardist I know, the best guitarist I know, and me being fairly top-drawer myself at harmony and arrangement, and to see this pipsqueak play circles around all of us on our respective foci. Not a minute went by where I didn’t have a “well shit how’d he do THAT?” moment about a particular modulation
Note also that I did listen to 2/3rds of a Taylor Swift album the day before seeing this guy, songs from which make up the entirety of the Billboard 200, seeing something so uncynical, shorn of any victimization or swipes at exes, more content in 30 seconds than that album had in the entire 44 minutes of if I actually listened to; I was in a hopeless place. Desiccated by the Monocultural Uber-Karen. Collier was more Court And Spark than Taylor could ever hope to be.
My guitarist takes issue with the sexlessness of Collier’s presentation, that it renders his songs-about-intimacy meaningless. “I would do shots out of his navel; not in a sexual way, just to get drunk,” I said. “I wonder if we’re feeling now the same way people felt about Elton John before he was a big obvi gay gay. Like confused by the dorkiness if it but charmed nonetheless.” Collier also covered Queen (“Somebody To Love”).

AC/DC should have taken greater care with their lyrics to prevent unintentionally sexualized interpretations of ambiguous texts among listeners.

As much as I like most of Albini's recordings worked on, I never once cared for any of his bands. The last time I listened to Atomizer was 39 years ago and tried it again now. Nope - none of it is for me.

i'm just glad that albini didn't record spiderland. i love that album and he probably would have albini-ized it with that patented drum sound and wacky studio chatter snippets.

I don’t “get” Slint. I’ve tried. I guess my controversial opinion would be that it’s better to be a band that is inspired by Slint, and added hooks and melodies and stuff… I dunno.

re: inspired by slint, finding out that jesus lizard song was about slint's drummer flooding albini's house did make me appreciate it a lot more, actually pay attention to the lyrics, when normally i'd only process it as undifferentiated garbled yelling.
― Philip Nunez, Saturday, 11 May 2024 13:42 (one month ago) link
i once complimented david yow on his lyrics after a jesus lizard show in the early 90s and he seemed genuinely touched and surprised by that. i had read an interview where he said he didn't care if lyrics were included in their albums and i told him that they should always include them. i was a big fan of those scratch acid songs especially. but also the early jesus lizard stuff. they definitely had an effect on me. i preferred SA and JL southern gothic to nick cave's lyrics which always seemed hammy and removed from dirt somehow. even though i know they - SA and Yow - were influenced by birthday party in a big way.

i like the vocals! they're just kids. i don't really listen to a lot of 90s emo or post-hardcore though. it wasn't my world. i was a huge squirrel bait fan in high school. but that was 1985 grunge post-hardcore. i do love sunny day real estate.

i do discover 90s stuff that i like a lot all the time though. things i missed. i've been listening to the breadwinner comp a lot since decibel magazine put it in their hall of fame an issue or two ago. they passed me by. no vocals mostly!
