I was initially disappointed with this album but - surprise! - after hearing some of it on the live "Striped Sunlight Sound" album, I came around. And so - "Darlinghurst Nights".

This album is actually better than a couple released during their first phase, and it's certainly the best of their reunion albums.

I must respectfully disagree. I thought the bang-charge of Sleater Kinney's backing on "Friends Of Rachel Worth" is better and the songs more memorable. While it's possible I'm biased due to the novelty of a new Go-Betweens album after many years, it's still the post-reunion album I go back to.

No pox on Rachel Worth; it just sounds more like Forster/McLennan than Forster-McLennan. On Oceans Apart they're in an actual band.

I think Oceans Apart is the best reunion record, kinda for the same reasons Alfred says. But we can agree to disagree! "Darlinghurst Nights" is like everything I love about Robert Forster compiled into one song.

i am a little baffled by this darlinghurst love. it is not a bad song by all means but it is a little bit of a boring ballad. a yawnfest missing the quirky, mercurial side of the go-betweens completely. very settled and mature. the end when it has something of a free-flowing jazz improvisation is better. but still. the statue is a great melancholic mclennan song btw.

yes, all those specific details and emotions of "Darlinghurst" are really unmercurial and sedate.

I mean, that's what I love (on ONE of the things I love) about the Go-betweens right there -- a perfect depiction of how memories creep up on you, how you're always living with your past even if you don't realize it.

well, sure, "Darlinghurst" is pretty straightforward musically ... this whole album is that way, isn't it?

hot diggity, nice poll idea! haven't heard this in a few months but taking "Lavendar" this time. they were so fuh-reaking sublime on this tour (my one GOB's show).

I finally said to hell with it and voted "No Reason to Cry."

"Darlinghurst Nights" is still the best song about Darlinghurst (Paul Kelly's "Darling, It Hurts" is just rubbish).

Also: alex is RONG about "Darlinghurst Nights." The whole point of the song is how the Go-Be's find a musical correlative for how the meditation gives way to a flood of memories.

i picked 'lavender' but it could have been any of them except 'the statue'. love the clockwork reggae and the line 'shes got tasmania...in her head'.

It's great...sounds like shit, but thankfully it's getting remastered for the next box set.

I've just ordered the DVD of the film because it's not any streaming places; anyone seen it? I'm sure i've asked this on a different thread.

the documentary? I streamed it on Amazon Prime on Thursday. $3.

I ended up ordering the DVD. No regrets as I've watched it a ridiculous number of times by now.

Also, let's pretend I noticed this poll at the time such that there's a '1' against "The Mountains Near Dellray".

Damn yeah it's not streaming on Amazon in the UK.

Surprised it's not on any of the rando sites, like Kanopy or Hoopla or Tubi. Took me a while before I was able to stream the excellent Chills doc anywhere, but I'd happily pay $3 to stream this.
