thank you! i'm also loving the "awful" tape on deluxe bias

budo jeru, Thursday, 21 March 2024 04:27 (two years ago)

Gosh, I always love Deluxe Bias, and that was no exception (though I feel like they missed an opportunity to call it 4 Awful Songs).

I enjoyed this new Unlawful Assembly tape by Youth in Asia with coffee this morning. Terrible name! But some good, funny vocals and great riffs and overall appealing feel.

punk bands to come up with an original band name [IMPOSSIBLE]

fuck's sake there are 14 of them on discogs, but this is one I know https://www.discogs.com/artist/399717-Youth-In-Asia-2

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 21 March 2024 15:18 (two years ago)

let the record show that there is only one "The Gobs" on discogs ;)

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 21 March 2024 15:38 (two years ago)

I admit I am not as into this strain of punk. In some ways, a lot of the sounds that I enjoy in the punk/hc realm are overwhelmingly similar to the sounds that I enjoyed most as a teenager— grind, thrash, and Orange County hc alongside stuff like Born Against is my sort of sweet spot. Snotty punk a la the Gobs is fun live, but I never listen to it.

yah u are way more metal/grind oriented than me, I'm a sucker for the "dorky melodies buried in distortion" thing

thankfully we live in times of such bounty that there is enough great punk for everyone!

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 21 March 2024 19:30 (two years ago)

ILX punk McCarthy hearings where everyone has to state if they are an egg punk or chain punk

I do not get the Uranium Club album at all, somebody give me a good track to try besides the first one

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 21 March 2024 19:37 (two years ago)

wrt distorted dorky melodies vs grind/thrash/hc I am v much "why not both?"

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 21 March 2024 19:38 (two years ago)

Can’t speak to the new one but their older stuff always reminded me of Wire and occasionally of 100 Flowers/The Urinals

Maybe it’s more that I don’t mind the former, it just doesn’t excite me much.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 21 March 2024 19:41 (two years ago)

fair! I am the reverse, pretty much, although straight oldschool pre-metal HC can still enthrall me at times

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 21 March 2024 19:48 (two years ago)

I am from the generation of hardcore kids where metal was just beginning to make inroads, I especially was deeply suspicious of it and snobby about it too. I viewed DRI's "Crossover" as a personal betrayal, lol.

table iirc your era was the era where emo was considered the "enemy", yeah? the white-belt kids of the early 2000s?

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 21 March 2024 19:50 (two years ago)

I guess mine would've been the Epifat type of NOFX-clone skate punk, I basically only listened to 70s-mid-80s punk/hc in the late 90s because of that stuff. never went to any punk gigs either, I thought all "modern" punk was rubbish. thanks to the internet and file-sharing I now know there was good stuff happening all through that era I just missed it all

Colonel Poo, Thursday, 21 March 2024 20:37 (two years ago)

Sleeve, not sure this will do it for you, but this is one of the more straightforward rockers on the album.

https://staticshockrecords.bandcamp.com/track/abandoned-by-the-narrator

Admittedly the Uranium Club thing is pretty specific, easy to see it not working for lots of folks.

grandavis, Thursday, 21 March 2024 20:52 (two years ago)

Uranium Club played here (Sydney) last night… I went along mainly to see RMFC who are always great… hadn’t really gelled with the Uranium Club I had heard prior but they were super fun - well-judged mix of smart and dumb, clever song structures (Wire mention above was OTM) - got the crowd going, a terrific night

Kraal Disorientation Chamber (emsworth), Thursday, 21 March 2024 20:54 (two years ago)

I fuckin love RMFC, one of the best albums from last year.

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Thursday, 21 March 2024 21:04 (two years ago)

speaking of RMFC:

https://totalpunkrecords.com/collections/frontpage/products/total-punk-order-of-the-dirty-plates-7-singles-club

"The bands included are: RMFC, CLASS, RETAIL SIMPS, TEE VEE REPAIRMANN, ITCHY & THE NITS, SPIRAL DUB, ALIEN NOSEJOB, and PUPPET WIPES."

My timeline is as follows:

95– eleven years old, first issue of MRR. Really into the Dead Kennedys, the Buzzcocks, the Adverts, UK Subs, all the older UK stuff.

96- Bouncing Souls and Blanks 77, but yearning for more uh edgy and different stuff. Got into a lot of local punk and hardcore acts, like the Boils, Manual Seven, DisSucks, Plow United, 2.5 Children, Violent Society… the stuff associated with Creep Records and Corrupted Image records. My favorite band undoubtedly the Boils or The Showcase Showdown. My first zine reviewed in Punk Planet.

97- started ploughing through the crud and got into the 625/Slap-a-Ham stuff, along with everything on Outpunk and Havoc, as well as Los Crudos, Charles Bronson, etc. A lot of crust and peace punk stuff too. Totally obsessed with Dropdead, His Hero is Gone, and Kill the Man Who Questions.

98- I call this the Vermiform/HeartattaCk year— more into post-hardcore and shit like Submission Hold, as well as digging into the crust (Anti-Product) and noise (Bastard Noise and etc).

99- still into the same stuff as the year prior, but drifting a little— a camp counselor gave me a tape with a load of stuff on it like Big Black, Radiohead, Tom Waits, etc. I also became somewhat obsessed with REM’s early records.

2000- more heavily into jazz and mainstream rock music that I had neglected for my tween and early
teenage years, didn’t “forget” about the politics of punk and hardcore but simply lost interest— also tho this was the time of Limp Wrist’s beginnings, it was also really hard to be a gay teenager and a punk in Philly, especially where I went to school.

in 2009, my interest returned as I found myself broke and marginalized and in love with a queer punk boy, got deep in the scene again while still following other music, and continue to dip in and out as I see fit. i still listen to a lot of hardcore and punk, but yknow, not all the time, and i am certainly not the collector scum i was when i was a kid.

i do think things would be different if my punk record collection hadn’t burned up in a house fire in Ohio circa 2010– i probably would have a different grip on what i liked and didn’t like back then. but for now, a lot of it is just memories.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Saturday, 23 March 2024 12:48 (two years ago)

so in other words: i have no idea what the white belt kids were/are, and i loathed emo… tho still have affection for the very early Orchid records and the first Boysetsfire record

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Saturday, 23 March 2024 12:50 (two years ago)

somewhere in a closet in my parents’ house is a box with all of my punk CDs, which i might try to scrounge up one of these days.

last year i finally took back the box of nearly every Punk Planet ever published, from the 3rd issue to the final one

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Saturday, 23 March 2024 12:52 (two years ago)

wow @ RMFC

budo jeru, Saturday, 23 March 2024 15:50 (two years ago)

they are so good, I love how the electric 12-string sounds in that mix

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 15:51 (two years ago)

table that's super interesting, those are years I wasn't always paying attention to punk, mine is kinda like:

1982: first Sex Pistols album, first Clash concert (their last US tour)
1983: heavily into Joy Division, Siouxsie, Gang Of Four, postpunk in general
early '84: shift to Dead Kennedys/Black Flag, first actual HC show (JFA, Sun City Girls, Mighty Sphincter, local HC band)
late 84: DRI, Suicidal, Minor Threat, Minutemen, all of it
late '85: starting listening to TG, PTV, Coil, etc
86: Sonic Youth rules my world
87-96 or so: noise/experimental snob
97-2001: reminded that there are other good genres out there, diversification
2001-2007: we booked punk/HC shows at our house, Tragedy, Submission Hold, From Ashes Rise, all the hits. Faggot! Clan Of The Bleeding Eye! Realicide! fun times.
2008-2023: not much really, lotta record collector rock
end of 2023: friend plays me the Liquids album, I realize there is a ton of great stuff out there again, I start buying tapes by the dozens

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 15:58 (two years ago)

I should also note that I always listened to Chumbawamba, Crass, Fugazi, and The Ex throughout this entire timeline

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 16:06 (two years ago)

interesting to see your travels through it, too— interestingly it was in 99 that I bought Goo at a flea market and became obsessed with SY, and then that sort of helped me into other punk-adjacent but not punk music. i was also really into G!YBE and Windy & Carl in the early 2000s

Do we all go through a teen year or two where it feels wrong to listen to things not-punk? And is that the source of later exhortations that Mingus/Dylan/whatever *are* punk?

bendy, Saturday, 23 March 2024 21:51 (two years ago)

yes and yes imho

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 22:04 (two years ago)

yes

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Saturday, 23 March 2024 22:34 (two years ago)

I had to look to refresh my memory, my MRR years were 84-91. I still have them! I was also very into all the Olympia/PNW riot grrl/KRS/K stuff in the early/mid 90s. I do have some later stuff like heartattack, Slug & Lettuce, damn I wish I still had the Antipathy zines my friend Mike did.

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Saturday, 23 March 2024 22:46 (two years ago)

have a lot of Slug and Lettuce issues!!

Is the Submission Hold that two folks have mentioned the Vancouver band? Because I had no idea they had any impact outside of our town. They used to throw a great house show.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 25 March 2024 14:13 (two years ago)

yep! they were pretty big back in the day! one of our largest shows.

I painted my teeth (sleeve), Monday, 25 March 2024 14:39 (two years ago)

Loved them, saw them at one very memorable show in Detroit.

They were great. I still have a cassette of theirs from when they were orginally called Insult II Injury

I will cosign this along with table and sleeve, but will also note that the notion of "punk is an attitude and not a genre," while cliched, is nevertheless very true. And on some level, my whole taste in music is kind of subconsciously founded on this, which is why I have opinions like "Louis Cole is punk." Feel free to dismiss, I was never a true punk anyhow.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Monday, 25 March 2024 19:06 (two years ago)

irrational, they were huge here in Philly— all the crusty kids wanted to sound like Submission Hold, His Hero is Gone, or Anti-Product.

I wouldn't say *all* of it, but a lot of it. Like, do I think there is a connection between the snide and sneering rampages of Jello and the DKs to the cool cocaine cynicism of Steely Dan? Fuck yeah there is. The 'Dan are extremely punk...that's just one example, of course, but the point rings true to me.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 17:39 (two years ago)

that's awesome to hear. cool to see one of those bands I grew up going to see at house shows and such was actually much more popular than I ever knew

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 17:39 (two years ago)

I was listening to Submission Hold today, strangely enough

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 17:50 (two years ago)

I had college radio punker friends who would enthusiastically proclaim that acts like Springsteen and Billy Joel were punk as fuck. We didn't always agree, but I can see it, at least with Springsteen. One of those guys is now my brother in law so the arguments have lasted and evolved over the years.

underminer of twenty years of excellent contribution to this borad (dan m), Tuesday, 26 March 2024 19:16 (two years ago)

always thought that punk is one of the most aesthetically conservative (resistant to change, highly deferential to its own traditions) and minimalist (three chords, four-four, guitar-drum-bass) music genres. i kinda like that about it, but imo it’s stolen valor when punks try to claim actually formally innovative music (mingus, steely dan)

flopson, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 20:13 (two years ago)

Submission Hold was one of the best shows I've seen

blagobu, Tuesday, 26 March 2024 22:06 (two years ago)

They were great when I saw them, too, only once. I was 14!
