"madcap sessions" - Gawd 'elp us.

I'm surprised they've allowed her to make another album, given the record-breaking sales of the first one.

Anybody see her DC show the other night? How was it?

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Shit, I'd have tried to see that if I'd known.

annie in mtl last september: sold-out show way in advance at big 300-400 person theatre
annie in mtl last week: 25 tickets sold in advance

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Do you think "they" will allow M.I.A. another?

file under cozy techno (fandango), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:48 (twenty years ago)

x-post

Annie was at Black Cat in DC Sunday night.

curmudgeon (DC Steve), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

her performance at sxsw was pretty abominable.

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I was at the Black Cat show. Started really late, and lasted shorter than I thought. When the artist has only one album, you expect to hear most of the songs on it. I think she played like five songs from it and then a few newer songs.

But she and the band were really into it (I think she said it was the last night of the tour?), and the crowd was too. I would have loved a longer set.

I was there! The place was tiny and still wasn't even half full. But the Arctic Monkeys were playing the same night in another venue so maybe that didn't help.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 29 March 2006 10:14 (twenty years ago)

I am salivating at the prospect of an Alan Braxe collaboration.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

in mtl that night, love is all where also playing elsewhere.
was the annie show good though?

alan braxe and annie will be huge.

Daniel Gelfer (gelfball), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 11:31 (twenty years ago)

The Annie show was good but not spectacular. It was a pretty small thing with only Annie, Timo turning some knobs, and a guy I don't know on guitar/percussion.

daavid (daavid), Thursday, 30 March 2006 01:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm surprised they've allowed her to make another album, given the record-breaking sales of the first one.

Top ten artist in her own country though, innit.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 30 March 2006 05:50 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I'm surprised they've allowed her to make another album, given the record-breaking sales of the first one.

Apparently, it turns out they haven't: Plateselskapet droppet Annie.

If this means the two Richard X tracks are doomed to go unheard by me, BOATS WILL FLOAT DOWN THE RIVER OF BLOOD FLOWING THROUGH THE STREETS.

:(

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:54 (nineteen years ago)

So what does Lily Allen have that Annie From Norway didn't, apart from famous parents, friends high up in the London media...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 17 July 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

competent PR.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 17 July 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

she's not from the continent.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

So that's the reason she and Timo are supposedly roadies nowadays...

mikko (mikko), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:46 (nineteen years ago)

I saw her gig last year at the Koneisto festival, it was pretty lame. Even the Opel Bastards dudes (including the said Timo) lacked the usual spirit.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:51 (nineteen years ago)

initial annie (from norway) hype: july '04
album (properly) released: march '05

initial lily allen hype: april '06
album released: july '06

GEE, I WONDER WHY ANNIE'S ALBUM DIDN'T SELL.

finest quality internets beef (haitch), Monday, 17 July 2006 09:58 (nineteen years ago)

Don't most electro acts struggle to sell well?
I mean, apart from Kylie Minogue and Madonna who are both already well-established names with roots in the same 80s the electro trend takes its main inspiration from.

"Anniemal" did sell well in Norway, although here she is a bit overshadowed by Bertine Zetlitz, another female Norwegian electro act who has been one of the most popular Norwegian artists of the past 3-4 years.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 17 July 2006 10:50 (nineteen years ago)

nothing will ever, ever sell well if you release it nine months after everyone actually wants it!

finest quality internets beef (haitch), Monday, 17 July 2006 10:59 (nineteen years ago)

but 'chewing gum' didn't exactly set the charts on fire.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:03 (nineteen years ago)

wasn't it released in the same limited promo fashion as the album though? by the time it was out again, everyone had downloaded it.

it's the same reason no-one bought the rapture's album - anyone who cared had it six months earlier off p2p.

finest quality internets beef (haitch), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:05 (nineteen years ago)

in the uk 'chewing gum' came out september '04, so a couple of months after the big features, but a few weeks ahead of the planned lp launch. it was a regular release, but probably the hipster internet dudes already had it d/ld yeah.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:11 (nineteen years ago)

'Chewing Gum' did relatively well (#25 in the charts) with poor promotion and precious little airplay/Tv exposure. Presumably because many downloaders/net-buzz types also bought it (who else would've?).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:14 (nineteen years ago)

i bought it. almost the last cd single i bought.

Roughage Crew (Enrique), Monday, 17 July 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Still, I mean, I love Annie and all. But if they want to market something even better than Annie, then they should go for Bertine Zetlitz.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 17 July 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

who says lily allen won't suffer teh same fate?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 July 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

you mean in the States? i doubt she'll have any success at all over there but she's already considerably more popular and successful than Annie in the UK (not hard).

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 17 July 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

There's been other Scandanavian songstresses who haven't hit big here when they could have, like Robyn and Lene Nystrom who at least had past UK recognition and surely in "It's Your Duty" a quirky enough song to score a novelty hit. Still not as good as "Chewing Gum" though.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with Tom when he says there's a massive market for adult-orientated pop in the Kylie vein - it's just a matter of marketing to them effectively. Put Chewing Gum in an advert, release as single, put Heartbeat on Glamour magazine free CD, release album, watch people lap it up.

I reckon this album will still appear in one form or another somewhere. Problem is it will probably coincide with the return of BraveKylie, which will obviously obliterate everything in its path.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Missing something, yes. Presumably Annie's UK and US branch thought they could break her with DJ shows, 12" singles and commissioning remixes from hipster-friendly types rather than focusing on the people who actually, you know, buy singles when they are in the stores.

UNPOPULAR OPINION ALERT. Well, that new single "The Crush" or whatever it was certainly wasn't going to do anything, was it?

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 23:05 (nineteen years ago)

no it's true that song was ass.

jergins (jergins), Wednesday, 19 July 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

did you see her live ed? crush was pretty ace then.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 20 July 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

The live show was interesting in that her better songs didn't work so well and her not-so-good ones sounded much better - "The Wedding" was one of the highlights!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 20 July 2006 06:01 (nineteen years ago)

"Chewing Gum" is currently being used in the background for the trailers for Rob Brydon's new show, although it is very much the background and just the instrumental part.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 20 July 2006 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

the people who actually, you know, buy singles when they are in the stores

the trouble is that these people don't really exist!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:00 (nineteen years ago)

i guess empirical evidence would suggest that advert placing is a surefire way to at least get a song heard, which leaves me feeling v removed from the british public once again. who are these people who watch adverts? weirdos!

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

That 'Crush' single is rubbish, like a really poor retred of 'A Stroke of Genie-us'. Why? Very disapointing

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:08 (nineteen years ago)

the trouble is that these people don't really exist!

Yes they do, but they don't buy what you like, Lex! "The Wedding" was also rubbish, sorry, people! "Gimme Your MOney" was kind of amusing, though.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

who are these people who buy these cd singles then? i mean we have established over the past five years that the number of singles keeps on dwindling, how many copies do you need to sell to get in the top 10 these days, 70?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:33 (nineteen years ago)

Depends what you mean by "sell" doesn't it? It incorporates ("legal") downloads as well now you see.

Nick H (Nick H), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

Who's buying the singles? Indie kids. Who knows, but it ain't the kind of people who are impressed by this producer, this remixer, this hipster-friendly DJ tour.

Well, I don't know about in the UK. 10,000 would guarantee top 10 most weeks, I think.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

CD singles are horrible.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

I like CD singles when they have some B-sides, a remix that hasn't just been plunked out to fill the space and THIS VERY IMPORTANT, the video for the song in a NON QUICKTIME FORMAT.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 20 July 2006 08:48 (nineteen years ago)

actually it IS indie kids, isn't it - the kind of idiot who needs to be completist about everything, who cares about artwork and packaging and formats.

but those people tend to also care about producers and remixers and so on, so.
