Gig was fucking amazing tonight. I decided to skip the first few hours because while I like the first 2 bands they were on at 3 then there were 4 karate bands so I got there about 5:30. Highlights were Stingray, the Flex (seen them loads of times but this was a highlight, crowd went fucking mental) then Framtid just completely destroyed the place

Gigs like that are why I still love hardcore punk

loved Prison Affair and Cherry Cheeks, and The Gobs confirmed my belief that they are the greatest punk band in the history of the world.

(j/k, of course, but they did rule.)

they totally fucking ruled

points in The Gobs favor:
1. all 3 members wore dark sunglasses on stage
2. crudely painted sheet backdrop with band logo motif
3. twice as loud as the other three bands, the only one I needed earplugs for
4. singer/bassist saying "oh no, I forgot to do the banter, banter banter banter"
5. killer guitarist doing wild digital effects shit as interstitials to the tunes
6. talked to them afterwards and as soon as I told them about my radio show and instead of 99% of band reactions where they say "oh let me send/give you something to play" The Gobs were like "ooh can we do one of those things that's like "THIS IS THE GOBS AND YOU'RE LISTENING TO...", I fuckin love it.

7. sounded vastly better live than on their deliberately muddy-sounding recordings

and yeah Cherry Cheeks killed it to, there was a moment near the end of their set where it all really seemed to click

8. best new drummer I have seen in a good long while, her name is Jolene!

#5 = i was right by him. at one point, he was making the sound of a toy laser gun into his pickups and looping it.

they also had one of those blow-up dancing guys like you see in front of car dealerships (but like 5 feet tall) and they'd modified it with an alien face and flipping middle fingers on both hands. i didn't even know it was there but as soon as they started playing, it filled with air and stood straight up. it was awesome.

they also have the best songs titles of any new band, I mean "Nuke The Sun"? I Wanna Fuck The Moon"? that shit is genius level.

Gosh, I always love Deluxe Bias, and that was no exception (though I feel like they missed an opportunity to call it 4 Awful Songs).

I enjoyed this new Unlawful Assembly tape by Youth in Asia with coffee this morning. Terrible name! But some good, funny vocals and great riffs and overall appealing feel.

I admit I am not as into this strain of punk. In some ways, a lot of the sounds that I enjoy in the punk/hc realm are overwhelmingly similar to the sounds that I enjoyed most as a teenager— grind, thrash, and Orange County hc alongside stuff like Born Against is my sort of sweet spot. Snotty punk a la the Gobs is fun live, but I never listen to it.

yah u are way more metal/grind oriented than me, I'm a sucker for the "dorky melodies buried in distortion" thing

thankfully we live in times of such bounty that there is enough great punk for everyone!
