got this album at a mall, so the mall one's a sentimental fave

I remember I was still going to church and we were having a secular music share session where we printed out the lyrics to the song and played it for the group.

Most people were choosing inoffensive stuff like "Every day is a winding road" or Will Smith "Men in Black" (in which the person sharing got 30% of the lyrics wrong, including mistaking "Forget the Roswell crap" for "Forget the Ross. Well, crap!")

I originally decided I wanted to share Lakini's Juice cos I was big into the song and my friend read the lyric book and said "come on dude, you are really going to play a song with lyrics about baptizing some woman's feet in toilet water and eating skin? She'll probably confiscate your CD"

So I played them "Master of Puppets " instead

btw there's no way Ed Kowalcyzk didn't personally contribute "Now that I understand this right/Let me take it to the mic" to that tricky song he guested on

i think both have a few bangers, and enough passable album tracks to add up to one really good (if exceedingly overwrought) alt-rock album. it'd definitely be weighted more heavily towards Throwing Copper though.

IIRC, on the tour before that they were supported by Angelfish (Radioactive label-mates & Shirley Manson's pre-Garbage outfit) and Vic Chestnutt. Live & Garbage both later recorded covers of Chestnutt's "Supernatural".

Now y'all got me trying to figure out the hip-hop version of this whole sequence:

A. huge album(s) from genre new-ish to the mainstream, a la Nevermind, Ten, etc. Would this be The Chronic (although choosing Raising Hell or Bigger and Deffer from a 6 years earlier allows the most Kowalczykian* conclusion)?

B. Two years after A: first big releases by the gold rush of acts signed to cash in on success of albums from A

C. Four years after A: commercially or artistically-disappointing follow-ups released by acts from B

D. Five years after A: Secret Samadhi

*In that scenario, D has to be To The Extreme

I'm not too proud to admit I fucked with these guys pretty hard in high school. they were my first concert, in fact, in 1995 I think. I met Ed several years later and he was drunk but very nice.

Prefecture, I don't have an answer for a hip-hop equivalent, but if it helps any edge cases sneak in: I think the "commercially disappointing... of 1996" frame, as classic as that thread is, probably could have always been framed more as 96-97 without losing anything. Basically you add this album, Secret Samadhi, Ixnay on the Hombre, Nimrod, and the Talk Show album. True, a lot of those are followups to the late joiners of '95 rather than the powerhouses of '91-93, but I think they speak to the same diminishment from the headiest days of the alternative explosion, even as other acts less beholden to the grunge core racked up huge success with poppier offerings (Third Eye Blind, Collective Soul, Everclear, etc.).

Nimrod really got saved in the 11th hour by "Good Riddance". Warning was closer to a flop, and following it up with a hits album was no preparation at all for American Idiot.

Some other '97 contender: Ultra by Depeche Mode.

...oh, and POP by U2--the Final Boss of these failures/disappointments.

POP obviously a huge step down, clearly no longer at unstoppable "biggest band in the world" status, but it had also been six years since their last "true" album, and they weren't really part of the same alt-rock explosion anyway. But I do wonder if it helped cement execs' understanding that no rock band was too big to fail and that maybe it was better to just keep placing smaller bets on carefully cultivated new acts that didn't come with gigantic arena-spectacle headaches. I mean, why bother when you could get platinum sales out of the Marcy Playground album? (Secret Samadhi went 2x platinum, for the record.)

Insomniac (which I think(?) marked the biggest sales drop of anything from around the period) fits much better than either Nimrod or Warning purely in RIAA figures - in my head the parameters begin in the last quarter of 95, cf One Hot Minute

man back then 4 years was an eternity between bloodsugarsexmagic and one hot minute. amazing to thonk that bssm was released in the “Poppy Bush Interzone”

yah y'all are right, Nimrod isn't really a good fit... Insomniac is the dropoff record for them. "Good Riddance" was like a fluke novelty hit in terms of not actually shifting their public status - the greatest hits (a bit like the Beasties and Pumpkins comps around the same time) arrived like a retirement present.

lol ums. imo no album containing Lakini's Juice can be all bad, but even the best hits here are an acquired taste, and require looking past everything i tried to capture in the poll options.

would love to read an oral history of this thing, talking to the engineers and the booklet designers and the marketing people... was any attempt made to steer them away from all the puke, sperm and toilet water, lyrically and sonically? or were they seen as wunderkinds beyond questioning after Throwing Copper?
