Jane Wiedlin is amazing. She is super-talented, bold, funny, inconceivably cute and long before her time. To think that someone would look at her, an amazing and unique person, as nothing more than something to hump makes me see red.

Which is the 'LA punk oral history book' please?

piscesx, Monday, 18 December 2023 23:08 (six months ago) link

probably We Got the Neutron Bomb (?)

rob, Monday, 18 December 2023 23:10 (six months ago) link

She also had an essay in John Doe's Under The Big Black Sun: A Personal History of LA Punk IIRC

papal hotwife (milo z), Monday, 18 December 2023 23:22 (six months ago) link

Yes I was referring to Under the Big Black Sun. I guess "oral history" was not the right word for it, but she (like most of the authors) reads her section for the audiobook, which is great.

Man accused of kidnapping woman, holding her against will for 4-5 years at SE Houston home

The man in question is apparently the rapper Viper, probably best known for his album You'll Cowards Don't Even Smoke Crack.

That account is run by his UK-based label, and the top comment says:

i had no idea this was happening until like an hour ago, this shit is fucking crazy
ill probably make like one longform video about all my experiences with the guy and then leave this shit dormant
stuff is still on the site if you want it, i think ill try and donate some of this stuff to the victim
outsider records will probably stop there
cutting contact obviously
thanks for all of your support over the years it means a lot :) - kettle

there's a vaporwave dude called Nmesh who once did a collaboration with Viper - or more accurately he paid him $50 to do a few verses and produced a track around it. it sounded awesome, he clearly put a lot of effort into it (Nmesh not Viper), and then at the last moment pulled it because apparently he started doing research on the guy and was just like "uhhh this guy is a really bad person, I'm not putting my name next to his"

frogbs, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:02 (five months ago) link

hmmm I'm also starting to remember some Redditors trying to catfish him as an underage girl and finding out it was way way too easy

frogbs, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:08 (five months ago) link

The fanbase around him was always weird and fucked up fetishization bullshit

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:08 (five months ago) link

viper has always been a huge piece of shit. i remember c. 2016 friends of mine who had interacted with him personally telling me horrid things. but clearly now he's a lot worse than merely a huge piece of shit.

Look, you have to separate the art that was exclusively consumed by racist 4chan teens from the artist who kidnaps people

The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:20 (five months ago) link

I do have a friend who does not fall into that category who is heartbroken by this. I'd say Viper's reach is zoomer rymers in general (probably not worth taking a look there atm).

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:23 (five months ago) link

there is something genuinely weird and suspicious about this dude's "career", like none of the stuff on the RapperViperVEVO channel I think is actually made by him, I've always thought someone just cracked his YouTube and Spotify accounts and uploaded a ton of shit without him actually knowing about it. I mean if you ever hear him talk or read an interview with him he is def not all there

frogbs, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:28 (five months ago) link

yeah i've never got a handle on it either. the way he's clearly rapping on screen but you can't hear anything. one of my friends who ostensibly collaborated with him on a few occasions i'm pretty sure was no nearer the truth.

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:32 (five months ago) link

think i stopped enjoying the viper joke when (iirc) he abandoned his family during a hurricane. again 2016 or so.

I got some news for you about zoomer rymers

The SoyBoy West Coast (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:42 (five months ago) link

well i guess i literally count as one. though i hardly have much time for rym's 'community' (i mean i'm here right)

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:51 (five months ago) link

always wondered what the fans of this guy were actually fans of, I mean clearly none of the stuff he's done in the last 10 years (or longer?) is actually made by him, and if you do any research at all into him you will find out that he is clearly insane and a sex predator, idk maybe that's where the intrigue is, like it is kinda funny/interesting that nobody can figure out how his early stuff was made because Viper himself can't really say

frogbs, Saturday, 6 January 2024 04:58 (five months ago) link

probably mostly him having been (somehow) an inexhaustible meme - the youtube channel extends on it massively - peppered, or 'validated', by secondary appreciation of the hazy push-button cloud rap thing. i've seen people talk about the early music as if it was somehow quite radical. and it isn't?? but i guess in light of lil b, study beats and so on coming later i can guess why someone might assume that idk.

i remember seeing stories about him being a creep nearly a decade ago but this is well beyond even that, pretty horrific

like none of the stuff on the RapperViperVEVO channel I think is actually made by him

i think he just gave the channel owner a bunch of videos of him rapping in front of a green screen and let them do whatever with it. i don't think his stupid meme fandom even pretended to care about any music he made since they found out about him but i think some of them did convince themselves that some of his early albums were actually good idk

ufo, Saturday, 6 January 2024 15:18 (five months ago) link

i don't know this guy but the news report on him is completely fucking insane but I also don't understand: the cops came in april, saw the victim and didn't do anything? then came back now and she's nowhere to be found?

Monica Lewinsky … but the thing is, the amount of ridicule and shame that it entails…

sarahell, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:29 (three months ago) link

One of my students last semester did a research project about the scorn/shame/ridicule endured by ML after her sexual relations (choice of words intended) with Clinton. It was very well done. It was new info for most of the class. They didn’t know much (anything?) about the reasons it went down the way it did.

Also the idea that someone is “clout chasing” is almost always completely absurd and a last resort excuse.
