I upcycled two old three-CD cases (best of Eddy Mitchell and an Alistair Cooke comp) to make a two-volume set and chose the pictures I liked best. I'm REALLY pleased with this. I'm going to visit my mom tomorrow.

what a great photo, and such a cool era for jazz. is this tadd dameron's first appearance on record?

budo jeru, Friday, 23 February 2024 05:24 (eight months ago) link

Tadd Dameron's first appearance was probably in the early 40s as piano player for Harlan Leonard (and I could probably check this somewhere)

Sorry for the self-indulgence but this might be the best thing that's ever happened to me.

Wonderful collection of music from 1947.
for anyone needing respite from all the horror.

I just played a couple of months then my speaker ran out of juice, so waiting to charge it, as laptop speaker so anaemic. He's not well, very weak, and it's hard to find stuff to cheer him up... he loves it, and me too. So many wonderful people we never heard of....

New episode up! 1948 Part One

https://www.mixcloud.com/centuries_of_sound/1948-part-one-something-big-out-of-something-little/

For 1948 instead of splitting things chronologically I've made two very different styles of mix. This first one is about tape recording and television, it has a jerky, cut-up edit style and includes more of the experimental and novelty music, as well as the year's news clips and juxtaposed samples from TV commercials, etc. So I can put a tracklist, though it is very far from complete.

0:00:00 Pierre Schaeffer - Etude Violette
0:01:01 Les Paul - Lover
0:04:44 Texas Ruby & Curley Fox - Come Here Soon
0:07:44 Charlie Parker's All Stars - Constellation

0:39:45 Astor Piazzolla - Villeguita
0:42:29 Peggy Lee - Why Don't You Do Right?
0:46:39 Sotiría Béllou & Vasílis Tsitsánis - Péfteis Se Láthi
0:50:30 Dalila Rochdi - Haragli Guelbi, Pt. 1
0:54:13 Mukesh & Shamshad Begum - Raat Ko Jee Chamke Taare Aag
0:57:55 Elder A. Johnson - God Don't Like It
1:00:21 Willie Gumede & His Concertina Band - U Gumede

1:24:15 Dave Brubeck - How High The Moon
1:29:32 The Sauceman Brothers - Hallelujah We Shall Rise
1:31:04 Standard Radio Sound Effect - Canadian Geese
1:33:32 John Lee 'Sonny Boy' Williamson - Stop Breaking Down
1:36:22 Dick Wellstood - So in Love
1:40:41 Charles Mingus - Mingus Fingus
1:49:46 Django Reinhardt Et Le Quintette Du Hot Club De France - Just For Fun
1:53:02 Chet Atkins - Dizzy Strings

2:24:14 Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra - Oop-Pap-A-Da
2:29:41 Spike Jones & His City Slickers - None But The Lonely Heart (A Soaperetta)

New today - 1948 Part Two - Move

https://i0.wp.com/centuriesofsound.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/EnuvAeRWEAEeluW.jpg

Three hours of sounds from 1948. Where part one was jagged and cut up, this one is smoothly layered and immersive, with music from Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Jordan and obviously a lot more than that, including a full section of rock & roll and a section built around Hamlet and Macbeth. But no news! That went in part one.
