if no one has yet gathered, this whole thing has been one of the most anticlimactic things in my distant memory and i'm trying to have a good attitude about it. my disappointment is pretty significant tho.

This album is fine. I don't know what people were expecting

the ability to play his instrument beyond a very novice level.

like if this was one of those pandemic era pay-to-stream live performances and they just noodled it out as a one-time thing, fine. that would have been cool to see him!

but idk, to actually make a record out of these improvised jam sessions feels sorta cheap. it's not even clear what he's doing most of the time. i mean he's always been a greenhorn instrumentalist, but on the old records he at least sounded proficient and practiced.

yeah they kept making mixed-to-decently received records. the difference is: they never really stopped. andre has purposely and intentionally fucked off. again: that young man's brain was constructed incredibly well.

Black Thought is 52, and he seems more beloved and respected than ever. But I guess the Roots are an outlier for lots of reasons.

i'd say the anticipation for a proper roots-less black thought solo album reached its fever pitch around phrenology and has been waning ever since to the point that now even people like me (read: lifelong fans) are kinda like, "huh ya i guess that would be cool."

He just had that Danger Mouse record that was well-received, but definitely a trad old heads record.

Killer Mike and El-P are both 48 though.

So I learned about this on Open Mike Eagle's podcast series w/Questlove - when recording Do You Want More, they made this medley where Black Thought impersonated all these rappers in voice and style, but it didn't come out until a couple years ago. Ridiculous.

According to Quest it was a hybrid, the vocals and most of the tracks were done in '94, but he re-did some of the drums (and obv added some other bits) in 2020.

The song titles are too long to be copies over to certain devices due to their file path. I've had to rename these as 'Track 01' etc
