Hi all,

first time this awesome page came to my attention and I must say it's a real treat: thanks so much for all the effort and work involved - this is really neatly done!!

Are you still interested in K. Coyne's/Siren's 'I Wonder Where'? If this is the case, please provide me with an e-mail adress where I can send it to (will be an mp3 - file).

Q.: is there any updated list of songs available for free download, but one where the link is NOT expired?

Cheers,

Dirk, Germany.

Dirk Huppertz, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Hi Dirk, We have Siren's "I Wonder Where." There might be people missing it though so you can go to yousendit.com, upload the song, and then post the link here. As for your second question, I'm not sure anybody is seeding a torrent right now. Second place to check is slsk, a number of people have the complete set there.

TRG (TRG), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

To catch us up after the holidays, here's a recap on the status so far. According to what I have in the spreadsheet, we're still without any leads on these:
Arthur K Adams: Wildwood flower/It's a wild, wild, wild, wild wildwood flower
Dreamland Express: Groovy/u.f.o
Firemen: Old smokie/Louie's theme
Sipho Bhengu: Tickey dopies/I saluti
Spit Out: O from I/Tan/Rot'n'roll

Various folks have indicated that they have these (but they haven't been uploaded yet):
Easy Teeth: Car Noise
Ken Colyers Jazzmen: all (If I Cease to Love is the correct A side)
Pocket Fishrmen: Yr Story
Sasha Caro: all (lucky catch)
The Legion of Super Heroes: all (or did I imagine this?)

Missing B sides (don't know if anyone has them):
Clefs of Lavender Hill: First Tell Me Why
Greenhornes: Stayed Up Last Night
Mickey Lee Lane: With Your Love
Ray Martin: Bell of the Ball
Roshell Anderson: Such a Beautiful Thing
Stanley Winston: It's Alright
The Big Three: If You Ever Change Your Mind

Thanks again to everyone who's bought the singles, called in favors, or gone to great lengths to get missing tracks. We're within range of completion I think!

Feel free to amend what I have here if I've got the status of anything wrong.

patita (patita), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 05:30 (twenty years ago)

i lost out on the Big Three thing on ebay over christmas but wasn't too fussed as someone had said they had a copy in the meantime (there are a couple of cds available which contain the track but it appears under a different name, details upthread)

morris, Wednesday, 4 January 2006 12:56 (twenty years ago)

thanks morris! didn't realize that I'd missed so many.

I downloaded a wma to mp3 converter, but have not tried the actual conversion yet (had to switch machines, hence the missing files etc). I'll give it a shot tonight and post if I get it working (or not).

patita (patita), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 15:31 (twenty years ago)

lots of things will convert wma to mp3 - winamp has a diskwriter plugin, gold wave will read them and can write them out as anything (and also gives you the options of triming the ends, removing the worst of the pops and normalising)

have actually done all this already for those two and the previous wmas but files are at home... maybe tomorrow.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 4 January 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

If you're looking for one, I have put up a new torrent of everything so far (and also a torrent of everything since the last two)

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

Woo thanks! I tried searching on Slsk for john peel, john peel record box, record box, etc, and couldn't find anything, even searching within the ILM room. Just got a load of peel sessions.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Let me know if you have any trouble with it... It should be seeding right now though...

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:48 (twenty years ago)

ok, can someone explain this to me?

The Times has:
125 The White Stripes:
It takes two, baby
Fell in love with a girl

but we have:
125 Various:
Mr. Airplane Man - Hangin' Round Your Door
The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl
Rizzo - Cathy
Bantam Rooster - Shitlist + 1

shouldn't it be:
It Takes Two, Baby PROMO 7" (Sympathy For The Record Industry, 2001, SFTRI 663P)
Fell In Love With A Girl (album version)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 5 January 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm getting "Unable to connect to tracker for scrape" error for the torrent... might just be no seeds online right now or something.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 5 January 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

My PC was hibernating. It might be working now?

If you're using Azureus, the magnet for the whole torrent is:
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:OTIPAMM3WXFSYYME3LMRLVGSVWF2FHMB

Torrents are such a pain in the ass...

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Thursday, 5 January 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

What's the link to the page where everyone's discussing these songs? I heard tell of such a thing a while ago...

Jon McNeill, Friday, 6 January 2006 21:13 (twenty years ago)

Here, although there might be just as much conversation on this thread.

TRG (TRG), Saturday, 7 January 2006 04:50 (twenty years ago)

And now that I look there I see you've been there already ... hold on, I'll respond!

TRG (TRG), Saturday, 7 January 2006 04:57 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else been able to connect to the torrent above? The magnet link totally doesn't work, and neither does the .torrent file linked from the peelbox wiki. Boo hoo.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Saturday, 7 January 2006 05:41 (twenty years ago)

i noticed a few of the singles on ebay..theyre ones weve already got but if anyones collecting the vinyl it would be worth a look

kevin furr (kevfurr), Sunday, 8 January 2006 16:10 (twenty years ago)

I've been looking for dates on all the undated singles (wanted to be able to order the box chronologically) It's nearly done -- and when it is, I'll post the spreadsheet with dates (never done a YSI before, but how hard can it be?)

But for now, I've got a few corrections to the list that I stumbled upon in my search:

a. Meow is actually Maow see: http://www.mintrecs.com/bands/speak/maow/maow.html

b. The Henchmen is actually the Hentchmen

c. Travis Wammack: the B side is Scratchy, not Catchy

d. possible correction on the Versatiles: the band name “Jr. Byles & The Versatiles” with the same song (Cutting Razor) is on a 2003 CD Lee Perry compilation titled “Cutting Razor: Rare Cuts From the Black Ark”

Also, a note on Peel’s apparent White Stripes/Jack White fixation:
You can guess from the list that Peel was collecting a bunch of White Stripes/Jack White related singles, but I had no idea how many until I found this amazing website:
http://www.grunnenrocks.nl/index.html?bands/w/whitestripes.htm

Click on “Jack White’s History” to find the connections to Upholsterers, 2 Star Tabernacle, Greenhornes, Dirtbombs, Hentchmen, Soledad Brothers,Surprise Package/Flying Bomb Records. For instance, Jack White co-mixed the Greenhornes single that’s in the box.

biscuit, Sunday, 8 January 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been able to get any of the torrents to work either. The tracker seems to be down.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

biscuit - you're right that meow and maow are the same band, but that single was released as meow whereas the album was released as maow.

scroll down to the nov 9th post:

TRG (TRG), Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, TRG. Maybe there’s something else the collected knowledge on this thread can help with: The Legion of Superheroes. The only hint I found is this link, to a playlist on the site of the “joke” classical guy, Peter Schickele/PDQ Bach!
http://www.schickele.com/cgi-bin/playlist.pl?program=11

He lists two tracks, no date: CERF/FRITH/WINTER: “The Great Name Dropper (Part 1)”, The Legion of Super Heroes, AMY 971 (45 rpm) and CERF/FRITH/WINTER: “The Great Name Dropper (Part 2)”, The Legion of Super Heroes, AMY 971 (45 rpm)

Looks like The Legion of Superheroes may not be a band name, but the name of an album. Maybe the person who posted the one track we have has more hints? I’m stumped.

biscuit, Sunday, 8 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

That's listed by 'composer', not Artist.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 9 January 2006 09:20 (twenty years ago)

didn't someone read out Frith's name during the documentary? i remember hearing names i didn't know from the list.

(ah, yes, michael palin about 3:15 minutes in, "Mike Frith and Chris Cerf")

koogs (koogs), Monday, 9 January 2006 10:59 (twenty years ago)

another couple of hits for "the great name dropper"

for sale here: http://worldofgramophones.com/45rpm27.html ($10.50)

track of same name by 'Harvard Lampoon'?:
http://www.usenet.com/newsgroups/rec.music.dementia/msg00496.html

http://www.avistic.demon.co.uk/playlists/2001/05.txt - look at Feb 1st show at the bottom - chock full of things from the box.

koogs (koogs), Monday, 9 January 2006 11:18 (twenty years ago)

christopher cerf did music for the muppets and sesame street. michael frith was also part of the jim henson creative team. don't know about winter. "great name dropper" was probably some one-off single as legion of superheroes.
and, by the way, he did say "clarence frogman henry" twice.

morris, Monday, 9 January 2006 15:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, I've completed adding dates for all the tracks into the spreadsheet (the one from upthread- thanks to the original author!). I found it a really cool experience to listen to the box in a semblance of chron order.
http://s61.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1MCI1RUT8YOBV3UWC97GYMNSPC

(Caveat: It's not authoritative -- some of the added dates are estimates, all depend on possibly erroneous info from the web, and a couple resist dating entirely -- but it's something.)

biscuit, Monday, 9 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I have now got about 50 of the vinyl singles from the box. Would anyone like to post the latest want's list A & B sides. I have a feeling that the Roshell Anderson B side is wanted but most of the singles I have, we have.

keefus (keefus), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

keefus - you need those as mp3s? converting is pretty easy - there are dozens of free downloads that will do it in a second. but if for some reason you're not able to do that i'll repost them as mp3s after the weekend.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 13 January 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)

hey trg
i'd love those as mp3s but what would you recommend as a converter?

Is anyone sharing these on Slsk? The torrent files don't work for me...

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Friday, 13 January 2006 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Is it safe to write off the alleged Yami Bolo b-side? The single really doesn't seem to have one...

I have done all new torrents on a reliable tracker... I'm pretty sure these should work this time...

Upload Roshell Anderson.

Clefs of Lavender hill is on it's way from the US.

Rock. That torrent works! I'm downloading! Thanks much.

Bob, if it's a problem for you to convert wma to mp3, I will happily do it and YSI the files once the torrent's downloaded.

That would be appreciated.
