"also still open to suggestions of nice tribal house that sounds like this..."

You may want to specify what it is particularly about the remix that you love in order to ensure on-point recommendations, but as a starting point you should check out Dubtribe Sound System's "Equitorial" if you haven't heard it before - massive tune.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:08 (nineteen years ago)

What happened to the FIZBEAST? I think I'll get this on ye olde vinyl (it's cheaper anyway) myself =) might have gone off "Dummolater" a bit already (it reminds me of another tune I can't place right now...)

new new wave of new wave new rave (fandango), Friday, 3 November 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

I have to say that fizheuer zieheuer is the best 30+ mins of music I've heard in a while, at least as far as new stuff. I wish this track was an hour

-- Dominique (d_leon...), November 2nd, 2006.

AMEN, DOM.

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Saturday, 4 November 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

lfam, that sendspace link doesn't work for me. it just comes up as a non-file.

also, 'Dummolator' is sick. totally totally sick.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 5 November 2006 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

i think you need to rename the file to quizas.mp3

i bet using that non-latin character for the 'a' fucked it up

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Sunday, 5 November 2006 05:28 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i think that was it. is quite nice.

my feelings summed right now: 'what's wrong my friends' takes a bit too long to get started, but ends well. nice syncopations. 'gugga sempa' has a nice mood to it, but keeps it for too long. sort of flat. 'africolaps' is sweet. and i think we can all agree that 'dummolator' is a bowel-shaker.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 5 November 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

I really love 'what's wrong my friends' (the track); the rest of the ep is taking some time to grow on me, I think. Weirdly not feeling fizheuer so much (yet?).

ampersand, hearts, semicolon (cis), Sunday, 5 November 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

How on earth do I go about pronouncing "Fizheuer Zieheuer"? I can sort of make out the first bit as "fis-hoy-[schwa]," but... "see-hoy-[schwa]"? That sounds off.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Sunday, 5 November 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

i love that there is a woman saying "extra credit" over and over in lazer@present! shit is NOT weak, rslvd!

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:24 (nineteen years ago)

i actually think that lazer is way better than que belle epoque; it does way more to make me feel like i am inside of a world constructed entirely of out song, with a lot less than q.b.e., using loose bass programming into some echo effects and handclaps.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Monday, 6 November 2006 05:27 (nineteen years ago)

and then halfway through come the bongos! shit is unbelievable. dude IS SO a genius

xpost

"fitz-hoy-er zee-er-hoyer", I think.

But what does it mean? Babelfish comes up with "pull-pulling your" for Zieheuer!?

I only managed to find the second half, and found the horns a bit restrained when they came in (and out), compared with descriptions above. The first half is where all the action is, though?

808 the Bassqueen is nice, though.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 6 November 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

"fitz-hoy-er zee-er-hoy-er"

Missing hyphen!

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Monday, 6 November 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

I remember hearing Villalobos play Fizheuer Zieheuer when I was at SONAR this summer. It was around 6am and I was all cracked out from being up all night. I distinctly remember how mind blowing it was to hear the sound of that wandering brass band that keeps fading in and out of the mix...

It reminds me a lot of what he did with the guitar strings in Hireklon on Au Harem. This sort of solo musician playing his instrument as he wanders the empty streets late at night - ominous and beautiful at the same time.

augustus (augustus), Monday, 6 November 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

so the Beck remix mentioned upthread is definitely by Ricardo "I Hate Remixes!". I'd be interested to know how that transpired.

a (rslvd), Thursday, 9 November 2006 11:16 (nineteen years ago)

The CD version of "Fizheuer Zizheuer" sounds approx 10 times better than that shoddy vinyl rip, so I'm now loving it. Not so sure about "Fizbeast", though.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 9 November 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

Just got the vinyl. It's still too short! When it starts to fade out I'm like "where do you think you're going?!?"

(I heard Fizbeast this morning and it's Fizheuer with all the cool bits taken out innit?)

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Thursday, 9 November 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

O man, I thought there was a cool spinny drone in Dummolator, shifting up and down gears all the way through. Turns out to have been coming from the building site outside :-(

ledge (ledge), Friday, 10 November 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

Visnadi - Racing Tracks

i adore this track. still clears dancefloors all these years on!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Friday, 10 November 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

damn the 2nd half of that fabric mix is UNEARTHLY.

"From some still lower chasm in earth's bowels were proceeding certain sounds, measured and definite, and like nothing I had ever heard before. That they were very ancient and distinctly ceremonial I felt almost intuitively; and much reading in Egyptology led me to associate them with the flute, the sambuke, the sistrum, and the tympa num. In their rhythmic piping, droning, rattling and beating I felt an element of terror beyond all the known terrors of earth - a terror peculiarly dissociated from personal fear, and taking the form of a sort of objective pity for our planet, that it should hold within its depths such horrors as must lie beyond these aegipanic cacophonies. The sounds increased in volume, and I felt that they were approaching. Then - and may all the gods of all pantheons unite to keep the like from my ears again - I began to hear, faintly and afar off, the morbid and millennial tramping of the marching things ...

It was hideous that footfalls so dissimilar should move in such perfect rhythm. The training of unhallowed thousands of years must lie behind that march of earth's inmost monstrosities ... padding, clicking, walking, stalking, rumbling, lumbering, crawling.. . and all to the abhorrent discords of those mocking instruments. And then - God keep the memory of those Arab legends out of my head! - the mummies without souls ... the meeting-place of the wandering ..... the hordes of the devil-cursed pharaonic dead of forty centuries.. . the composite mummies led through the uttermost onyx voids by King Khephren and his ghoul-queen Nitocris ..."

those are the lyrics i made up

i like the idea of fumbling around for some bass like it was change or a cassette.

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:45 (nineteen years ago)

also, excited about teh unflug

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:49 (nineteen years ago)

i'm pretty sure those are the lyrics but i can't be sure. they make a lot of sense to me because growing up in miami i was intimately familiar with the 808 bass kick long before i knew about the roland company. you'd hear it all the time, coming out of cars, with the really long decay, lasting basically until the the next kick. standing on the corner, in a parking lot, in front of my house, it was everywhere. now it seems like a lot of hip-hop producers try to bring the bass through basslines instead of drums, or at least that's what people with double 24s in the trunk like to rock. i kind of miss it.

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:51 (nineteen years ago)

Listening to the Fabric mix now, I have to say, it's quite good. Villalobos plays out really kicking tracks at peak hour compared with some of his more introspective productions. I've read comments about 'bad mixing', and so on (pretty standard to be accused of this criticism), but I don't hear it here. At least not so far...

Michael Dieter (Mika), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 05:39 (nineteen years ago)

How's your German? You have to focus and lip read at times! I think this is the interview disc that Geeta mentioned picking up for free in Berlin a while back:

his dj sets is his best asset. in my mind. at this point.

(yeah, what is the deal with fewer beat-beats and more bassline-beats in hip-hop?)

For German people to watch on German telly?

struttin' with some barbecue (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

odd the interview wasn't initially conducted in German though; I'm sure Hawtin speaks it.

He could be a Momus (lives in Japan and Germany, speaks neither Japanese nor German).

i really can't believe this statement:

i find the frisbee tracks stuff INCREDIBLY weak compared to alcachofa (which totally works on the dancefloor, just not a 'banging' one)... different folks though.

have you heard logohitz??
