I honestly believe that even if all this had not transpired I'd rank her solo output thusly:

Overpowered > Ruby Blue > Róisín Machine > Mi Senti > Take Her Up to Monto > Hairless Toys > Hit Parade

I was never going to buy it because I don't want that album cover in my house, but fortunately it sucks so I'm not missing out.

kapranos just seems to be agreeing with 'cancel culture bad' without really caring about the details - he replied favourably to someone complaining about linehan so he seems to just be doing a naive 'we should all be nicer to each other' thing

oh, so he's just dumb rather than malicious, neat

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 05:17 (two years ago)

lol yeah I saw someone describe Alice Cooper as a TERF and thought well not exactly

I interviewed him a bunch of years ago and he was explaining how he was a republican but not a Trump republican, and then said about raising his kids, "My daughter's cool, she hasn't had a bunch of fucking abortions or anything", which was hells of gross.

Lumpy pillows, kiss my ass. Put that in your book (stevie), Tuesday, 12 September 2023 08:42 (two years ago)

Also interpreted it as a cancel culture thing. Wonder why

PaulTMA, Tuesday, 12 September 2023 11:04 (two years ago)

I'm guessing that many of these people are TE without being RFs.

― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux)

"TERF" as far as i can tell is kind of a thing where language evolves. people like janice raymond and michfest, that's the sort of thing i associate with trans-exclusionary radical feminism. you don't really see a lot of that stuff these days. not really sure where the term comes from etymologically tbh! when you do see transphobia intersecting with feminism it's liberal feminism along the lines of j.k. rowling. your old-school terfs tend to come from more of a "feminism is the theory, lesbianism is the practice" school. i'm honestly broadly sympathetic to the notion of political lesbianism, but it doesn't hold up, and it led to some pretty nasty gender-essentialist side effects (i'm not talking about trans stuff here, more along the lines of some radical feminists actually saying things like cw sexual assault only men rape which uhhhh it's not terribly hard to see who benefits from _that_ one).

anyway in theoretical and academic terms that sort of ideology is not really intellectually defensible and i don't see that there seems to be much room for it in queer theory. the problem is that it's basically impossible to formulate a coherent and consistent definition of... and this is the way the question is generally framed... "woman" that doesn't fundamentally reduce womanhood to women's reproductive capacity, and this is being increasingly openly recognized by "gender critical" folks...

i am more and more leaning towards "gender critical" as a descriptor of transphobes... in general i am sympathetic towards endonyms. i don't know if it's intended to a propagandistic or apologetic endonym, i don't know _what_ it's supposed to mean, honestly, nor do i know what people mean when they denounce "gender ideology". does this shit fly with cishets? if you say "gender ideology" to them does that, like, make them unfavorably disposed towards trans rights folks?

anyway, any definition of "woman" that focuses solely on women's reproductive capacity is, uh, hard to reconcile with queer liberation, as well as tending to foreground the central point that trans rights are, at root, a fight for bodily autonomy... it's hard to call any ideological movement that doesn't fight for bodily autonomy "feminist" in any sense of the word imo.

re: origins of TERF I'm pretty sure it was coined in the comments on one of those late 00s feminist blogs (possibly feministing) at that time referring to an online fringe who were much more along the lines of classic terfism than liberal transphobes like murphy are. it got picked up by tumblr and the terf faction there really took offence to it which just made it more powerful. by the time liberal celebrities and politicians decided trans people needed to die sooner there was a readymade term to throw at them and even though it doesn't really fit in most cases it works well enough for now and it seems to bother them a lot which is cool

well, uh, so much for Pitchfork ignoring it. haven't read it in detail yet, but seems like the address the controversy and still give it a pretty high score. guess they think the BNM snub is enough?

i mean, helluva shift here:

Despite her saying that her “true calling is music, and music will never exclude any of us,” her comments feel like a contradiction to the spirit of her best work. The truth is that Hit Parade is the best record of Murphy’s career; it also feels like the definition of a qualified triumph. It is both musically vast and hemmed in by its circumstances, a showcase of everything impressive about the musician sapped of the excitement that has historically made her work feel so vital.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 September 2023 04:30 (two years ago)

just because it's not my field, what's the timeframe between an album review submission to publication these days?

Huh. I assumed that if p4k reviewed it, it'd at least be more pointed about the transphobia, closer to Laura Snape's Guardian review. Still think that not reviewing it at all would've been a better move.

jaymc, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 13:57 (two years ago)

then again, ignoring RM's album means ignoring the effort of DJ Koze, who by all accounts seems like a real dude

The Pitchfork review read very New Yorker-ish to me. Here are some things that happened around the release of this album.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 13 September 2023 14:15 (two years ago)

Also I’m not sure how scores on pitchfork are picked (writer + editor decide iirc?) but different writers guve different scores.

Score would have probably been higher without the current controversy I assume.

I still think controversy removed this is overrating it, and it most definitely isn’t her best album.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 16:09 (two years ago)

my theory is p4k fucked up by not giving roisin machine (which is obviously better) a higher score or bnm and so had to overcompensate by overrating this one (same thing they’ve done with the 1975 after panning “I like it when you sleep” or the-dream after ignoring love vs money and love/hate) and they had it as like a 9.5 BNM until the trans stuff came out then compromised
