I was going to mention P*phides' thread. He could have just ended it after the sixth tweet but then what's really on his mind wouldn't be as clear.

Just another civility addict out there missing the point.
― steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 3 September 2023 19:31 (two years ago)
So no, I don't agree with 'cancelling' people. Apart from those who actually dish it out of course, who irritate me more than the horrible people whose harm and hypocrisy they're calling out. It's just HATE (unlike the viewpoints the hate is aimed towards)

i know this guy is a bit of nob sometimes but
I once saw #IStandWithRòisínMurphy Pull the “Do you know who I am” To a doorman at a party He replied “yeh I do” and still didn’t let her in… I stand with that doorman #TransRightsAreHumanRights— 🏴☠️ Geoff Barrow 🏴☠️ (@jetfury) September 3, 2023

Glinner is so close to getting his GC 'Coming Out' day he begged for a couple of years back
― PaulTMA, Sunday, 3 September 2023 21:25 (two years ago)
Haha yeah.
― piscesx, Sunday, 3 September 2023 21:28 (two years ago)
A friend says Paphides is a notoriously argumentative and grudgeful, very surprising
I don't actually remember the old yore days of Agreeinge To Disagree At The Pub, it's almost like it's a made-up idea
Civility is a privilege when you've got no skin in the game
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 4 September 2023 11:03 (two years ago)
politics as pleasant pub conversation with friends
― Tracer Hand, Monday, 4 September 2023 11:45 (two years ago)
Memories are short here; I remember him posting support for Jess Phillips’ leadership campaign! This is similar in naïveté.
― steely flan (suzy), Monday, 4 September 2023 11:59 (two years ago)
Agreeing to disagree at the pub is absolutely the norm where I live, and there are merits to that, but I do take the point about civility as privilege.

When I saw Pete’s thread I did think a couple of writers in his friend circle might push back, and I’m pleased it was Dorian.
― steely flan (suzy), Monday, 4 September 2023 12:58 (two years ago)
I think he has confused arguing about politics with arguing about the best Crowded House record
― Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 4 September 2023 13:00 (two years ago)
Not surprised at Dorian pushing back at all. Sadly seen others supporting Haslam/Paphides too.
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 September 2023 13:01 (two years ago)
Dorian Lynskey putting that in a reply where nobody will see it - what can I say, I remember him continuing to have Helen Lewis on his podcast long after she’d shown her true colours on this very subject, and he’s a typical liberal straight down the middle bser.
I wouldn't support a university full of Judith Butlers either.— Dorian Lynskey (@Dorianlynskey) November 8, 2021

lol forgot why I muted Dorian Lynskey when I went to check that tweet but he'll stay muted
― Murgatroid, Monday, 4 September 2023 14:48 (two years ago)
huh! did not realize that Dorian was disliked. but I only really know him thru ilx.
― jaymc, Monday, 4 September 2023 14:59 (two years ago)
Everyone is disliked on ilx if you dont share holier than thou politics..
― Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:02 (two years ago)
UK politics on ilx is hardly "holier than thou" ffs, it's minimum bog standard left wing views, which Dorian doesn't share.
― xyzzzz__, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:04 (two years ago)
tbh I probably muted him bc I found him annoying, not for his politics
― Murgatroid, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:06 (two years ago)
the man has a podcast with ian dunt
― the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:08 (two years ago)
I remember DL’s absolute dismissal of the role of white supremacy in the Tory victory in 2019 as a factor, but sure, these things don’t have any consequences for people in the real world.

yeah idk anything about his politics and have no idea who "ian dunt" is. only surprised bc he seemed like a smart, reasonable, and uncontroversial person when he posted here.
― jaymc, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:13 (two years ago)
Should always call him The Spectator's Dorian Lynskey
― Ward Fowler, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:14 (two years ago)
couldn’t be less surprised at the p*phides thread. would be great to see someone with similar status in that world of culty british music / culture writers go against him. not going to happen is it.

when will the woke ilx mob stop ragging on professional centrists for not being holier than thou enough?

I had no idea about this story - I assumed this thread kept popping up because she had a new album out - until I saw a thinkpiece by Brendan O'Neill's little mini-me, Ella Whelan, in the Telegraph today.
The piece, beneath a photograph of a lonely Glinner just thinking abaout things, was about a mea culpa from some Irish writer I'd never heard of along the lines of "Sorry Glinz, you were right all along", which was apparently provoked by the response to Murphy's comments.
Meanwhile Murphy herself seems to have decided to act as if the whole incident never happened and carry on promoting her "fantastically reviewed" new album.

Basically this was just more content thrown out to the Terf Intustrial Complex. Her ex-fans have moved on.
― Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Thursday, 7 September 2023 14:34 (two years ago)
That Irish writer was John Boyne, who may be the biggest piece of shit to ever slip from Ireland's stinking arse.
― droid, Thursday, 7 September 2023 15:24 (two years ago)
Out of curiosity I asked a friend who is active in trans research and trans rights work (but does not follow music or pop culture at all) if this had crossed her desk, and no, of course she had never heard of RM.

This is the third time in four years that John Boyne has tried to make nice with Glinner. Coincidentally he picked up 600 new followers for defending Murphy last week, and has a new book out soon.As well as fighting with the Auschwitz Museum for getting the Holocaust wrong, he is so dedicated to doing his own research and thoroughly analyzing what he reads that in 2020 he included monster body parts and fantasy mushrooms in a historical novel, because he googled “how to dye clothes red” and found a Zelda video game walkthrough.
― vashti funyuns (sic), Thursday, 7 September 2023 23:14 (two years ago)
I mean I was excited for the album too because I really like Dj Koze as a producer and was interested in hearing what he could do with Roisin - and yeah I’ll probably listen to it either way - but a 5 star rating is a bit exaggerated just going by the singles released so far.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 September 2023 23:16 (two years ago)
Given the Guardian's previous approach to trans rights in the past few years I would not be surprised if Snapes' rating was originally lower and an editorial decision was taken by someone above her
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 7 September 2023 23:42 (two years ago)

idk maybe it’s better that ppl have a conversation about it but as a queer person and a trans woman this has totally annihilated whatever pleasure i could take in her music

― ivy., Friday, 8 September 2023 00:35 (two years ago)
boyne wrote a novel about a trans teen a few years ago, which was fairly typical ignorant cis writer muddling through, didn't come across as outright malicious but still offensive and very out of touch. then he accompanied it with a very both-sides newspaper column on trans rights, rambling about how he supported trans rights but rejected the term 'cis' and he supported navratilova's transphobia but not linehan's and rightfully got a lot of shit for all that. in response to being criticised he's tripled down (as he did when criticised by the auschtwitz museum) and eventually decided actually linehan is right.
