sure and sure but there are other sources of funding if people decide your voice is important enough- she may not be seen as a reliable or important enough investment as far as US evangelical groups are concerned but who knows and I could see she who must not be named chucking her a spare ivory backscratcher or two

Yeah sorry wasn’t responding to recent posts just picking at an earlier thread

Grandall Flange (wins), Saturday, 2 September 2023 16:35 (two years ago)

Kind of forgot about that pinned comment, that was probably actually the worst signifier of her stance, especially considering the source of it if I recall correctly is someone who is virulently anti-trans?

omar little, Saturday, 2 September 2023 19:26 (two years ago)

i guess the thing that i take away from this - and this has _fuck-all_ to do with murphy and everything to do with me, i don't know shit about murphy and don't know or care why she's behaving in such an incredibly awful way all of a sudden...

but her bullshit just makes me think about how every six months or so i alienate and/or betray the people who care about me most in the world by saying or doing shit that is incredibly cruel and hurtful to them and clearly, manifestly wrong, for basically no apparent reason at all. then, when i'm called on it, i try to "repair the damage" in ways that only serve to further cause anybody who held me in any sort of esteem to conclude, logically enough, that they can't possibly trust me anymore, that no matter how they feel about me continuing to associate with me won't help me and will only cause them further pain. that's just like normal for me, that's just me being on my bpd shit, no real significance to my behavior beyond that.

so to the extent anybody cares at all about what the hell murphy is thinking about all this - and i'd argue that nobody should, it makes no difference at all _why_ she's done this terrible stuff... that's my bullshit hot take.

Kate (rushomancy), Saturday, 2 September 2023 22:27 (two years ago)

Well all I'm saying is that when she says she's an artist first and not an activist, I believe her. She stepped out of line, said shit, decides to shut up, leaving no one happy. I am not that surprised that a queer / gay icon suddenly proves not to be well versed and knowledgeable about trans health and the thorny ramifications of online discourse. An icon is rarely an authority. I plead naivety and blunder, but that's just me and I'm not part of the queer community and I ask no one to conclude the same. As Kate says directly above though, it's easy to say shit even when you should have known.

Lmao thanks zing, but my point stands (three times!)

I'm not part of the queer community

no shit

I am not that surprised that a queer / gay icon suddenly proves not to be well versed and knowledgeable about trans health

but this is the whole problem! this isn't some elderly shut-in whose never met a trans person (as far as the know) and gets all their "info" from right-wing media. if she was "naive" about trans health, maybe instead of memorizing some transphobe talking points and posting them in the vicinity of a notorious transphobe, she could have talked to one of the trans people she was adjacent to for years.

but she wasn't naive. your framing makes it sound like she said something almost accidentally transphobic -- she literally starts off begging to not be called a terf and asks people to stop using that word "against women." she knows exactly what discourse she's in. in her response statement she says "I knew my friends were informed about the topic," but which friends is she talking about here?

rob, Sunday, 3 September 2023 12:39 (two years ago)

Also we have her former stylist, who is trans but worked with her before transition, saying she isn’t their idea of an ally (which is putting it mildly).

steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 3 September 2023 12:44 (two years ago)

she doesn't have to be an authority but when you're an "icon", you can't plead ignorance and naivety either

give me a fucking break, bozo

Murgatroid, Sunday, 3 September 2023 14:08 (two years ago)

I plead naivety and blunder, but that's just me and I'm not part of the queer community and I ask no one to conclude the same. As Kate says directly above though, it's easy to say shit even when you should have known.

― Nabozo

i think you might have been reading my previous statement wrong. when i say it doesn't matter why she's said the things she's said, i mean that her offensive and bigoted statements, as well as her lack of recognition of the ways in which their offensive and her inability or unwillingness to make a meaningful apology for them, basically require the same sort of response one would give to someone who's being maliciously bigoted.

which is perhaps why you're getting such pushback from folks on the board here. the way you're behaving here is fairly rude, hurtful, and offensive to people who _are_ part of the queer community, including me. i'm not angry at you, i don't hate you, but i would strongly advise you to take a step back and try and understand why you're getting a hostile response from your statements here.

pleading ignorance is not a persuasive option here, i'm afraid. you spoke up on a topic you were ignorant about while ignoring the feedback of people who were _not_ ignorant about, who have direct lived experience of the topic.

look. i'm not unsympathetic. i do have a habit of providing my unsolicited uninformed opinions in the presence of people who actually know what they're talking about. i've done this my whole life, and i'm getting better at it, but, you know, sometimes i make mistakes. when i make a mistake like that, i recognize that it was a mistake, i provide a sincere apology - which looks like "shit, you know a lot more about this stuff than i do, i'm just going to go ahead and figure that you're right about this and i'm wrong", rather than "well, we all have our own opinions and i'm just not going to talk about it" - and after i make a sincere apology, i accept the consequences, because an apology doesn't excuse what i did or said any more than my ignorance does.

murphy conspicuously failed to do all these things, and she failed to do all these things to an extent that some people have voiced suspicions that her actions may have been an actual act of self-sabotage, despite the lack of any evidence to support this belief, just because her actions are so _unbelievably_ self-destructive.

ah, you know, i do find her sympathetic because i find her actions to be so relatable. i guess maybe other people find her behavior really relatable as well. i don't know.

I was going to mention P*phides' thread. He could have just ended it after the sixth tweet but then what's really on his mind wouldn't be as clear.

absolutely shocked no wait

Just another civility addict out there missing the point.

steely flan (suzy), Sunday, 3 September 2023 19:31 (two years ago)

So no, I don't agree with 'cancelling' people. Apart from those who actually dish it out of course, who irritate me more than the horrible people whose harm and hypocrisy they're calling out. It's just HATE (unlike the viewpoints the hate is aimed towards)

i know this guy is a bit of nob sometimes but

I once saw #IStandWithRòisínMurphy
Pull the “Do you know who I am”
To a doorman at a party
He replied “yeh I do” and still didn’t let her in…

I stand with that doorman #TransRightsAreHumanRights

piscesx, Sunday, 3 September 2023 21:28 (two years ago)

A friend says Paphides is a notoriously argumentative and grudgeful, very surprising

I don't actually remember the old yore days of Agreeinge To Disagree At The Pub, it's almost like it's a made-up idea

Civility is a privilege when you've got no skin in the game

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 4 September 2023 11:03 (two years ago)

politics as pleasant pub conversation with friends

Tracer Hand, Monday, 4 September 2023 11:45 (two years ago)

Memories are short here; I remember him posting support for Jess Phillips’ leadership campaign! This is similar in naïveté.

steely flan (suzy), Monday, 4 September 2023 11:59 (two years ago)

Agreeing to disagree at the pub is absolutely the norm where I live, and there are merits to that, but I do take the point about civility as privilege.

When I saw Pete’s thread I did think a couple of writers in his friend circle might push back, and I’m pleased it was Dorian.

steely flan (suzy), Monday, 4 September 2023 12:58 (two years ago)

I think he has confused arguing about politics with arguing about the best Crowded House record

Chuck_Tatum, Monday, 4 September 2023 13:00 (two years ago)

Not surprised at Dorian pushing back at all. Sadly seen others supporting Haslam/Paphides too.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 September 2023 13:01 (two years ago)

Dorian Lynskey putting that in a reply where nobody will see it - what can I say, I remember him continuing to have Helen Lewis on his podcast long after she’d shown her true colours on this very subject, and he’s a typical liberal straight down the middle bser.

I wouldn't support a university full of Judith Butlers either.

lol forgot why I muted Dorian Lynskey when I went to check that tweet but he'll stay muted

Murgatroid, Monday, 4 September 2023 14:48 (two years ago)

huh! did not realize that Dorian was disliked. but I only really know him thru ilx.

jaymc, Monday, 4 September 2023 14:59 (two years ago)

Everyone is disliked on ilx if you dont share holier than thou politics..

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:02 (two years ago)

UK politics on ilx is hardly "holier than thou" ffs, it's minimum bog standard left wing views, which Dorian doesn't share.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:04 (two years ago)

tbh I probably muted him bc I found him annoying, not for his politics

Murgatroid, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:06 (two years ago)

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:08 (two years ago)

I remember DL’s absolute dismissal of the role of white supremacy in the Tory victory in 2019 as a factor, but sure, these things don’t have any consequences for people in the real world.

What a name

deep wubs and tribral rhythms (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 4 September 2023 15:12 (two years ago)

yeah idk anything about his politics and have no idea who "ian dunt" is. only surprised bc he seemed like a smart, reasonable, and uncontroversial person when he posted here.

jaymc, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:13 (two years ago)

Should always call him The Spectator's Dorian Lynskey

Ward Fowler, Monday, 4 September 2023 15:14 (two years ago)

couldn’t be less surprised at the p*phides thread. would be great to see someone with similar status in that world of culty british music / culture writers go against him. not going to happen is it.
