From Real Gone Music:

Al Stewart Songs on the Radio Complete U.S. Singles 74-81 CD

The Vietnamese Lunar New Year identifies 2023 as The Year of the Cat…and the timing couldn’t be better! Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to announce a definitive, first-ever singles collection from legendary singer-songwriter Al Stewart. In 1976, Stewart took “Year of the Cat” to the top ten of the Pop and AC charts, inaugurating a run of timeless hits still heard on radio today. Now, for the very first time, each and every one of the British troubadour’s seminal A- and B-sides from his halcyon period has been brought together. Songs on the Radio: The Complete U.S. Singles 1974-1981 brings together 20 tracks which catapulted the artist from folk clubs to the mainstream. Often in collaboration with producer-engineer Alan Parsons, Stewart bridged the gap between FM rock and AM pop. He brought his passion for historical events and flair for lyrical invention to these singles originally issued on the Janus and Arista labels, including “Nostradamus,” “Carol,” “On the Border,” “Midnight Rocks,” “Year of the Cat,” “Song on the Radio,” and the record-breaking, chart-topping “Time Passages.” And the B-sides (“Terminal Eyes,” “Sirens of Titan,” “A Man for All Seasons,” “Merlin’s Time”) are every bit as compelling as the A-sides! Every track is presented in its original U.S. single version (most of which are new to CD and not even included on Stewart’s massive The Admiralty Lights box set) as newly remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision. The deluxe 20-page booklet features Joe Marchese’s extensive interview with Al Stewart as well as rare photos and memorabilia. As a special bonus, the unique U.K. single edit of Al’s signature song “Year of the Cat” is also included. With vivid lyrics, captivating melodies, crisp guitars, and, yes, smooth saxophone, these Songs on the Radio celebrate the remarkable discography of a master musical storyteller. Limited edition of 2500…and they’re gonna go fast!

PRE-ORDER: Holy Church Of The Ecstatic Soul: A Higher Power: Gospel, Funk & Soul At The Crossroads 1971 - 83

https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/img/dVdsUi9QR3d4WXFhT0xSZXJ2L0xhZz09/sjr-lp522-holy-church-slv-hi-res-sticker.jpg

oul Jazz Records’ Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul: Gospel, Funk and Soul at the Crossroads 1971-83 draws upon the extensive links between black American gospel music and soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caeser, Dorothy Norwood, Andrae Crouch and others crossed over into secular soul music during this period.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many of the most successful soul artists - from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, The Staple Singers to Sam Cooke - all drew upon their upbringing in the church for their musical inspiration. This album discusses how important the links between the black church and soul music were in creating soul music and spotlights some of the many important (and also little-known) gospel artists who walked this line between sacred music and soul, funk and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul shows how sacred gospel music was at home with Stevie Wonder, Blaxploitation-style funk and produced music celebrated both in New York’s underground discos (The Paradise Garage, Studio 54, etc) and later sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Bilge.

REVIEWS

"Curated with an obvious passion and sense of history, Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul serves as the perfect intro to the funky spirituals that once served as the foundation for various schools of sound (Philly R&B, disco, soul) over the last 50 years" The Wire

Anybody else pre-order that Luaka Bop Pharoah reissue? I got an notice that is shipped back on August 18th and that it should arrive by September 1st, but the tracking still shows that it's just sitting at the "label created" stage. I'm assuming it has to do with the 9/15 official release date, but wondered if anyone else saw the same thing.

Fwiw, I get that it's the USPS and not the labels, but I really hate getting a "Your order has shipped!" email when it's just the label and will still sit somewhere for weeks before it actually ships.

Yeah, I ignore every email about something I've ordered until I get the one that says "Your order has been delivered!" And even those are bullshit sometimes — it can take two days for the USPS to actually put something in my PO box.

More from Real Gone Music (Sept. newsletter)

We have a trio of modern rock gems for you today, vinyl debuts all around!

Rooney (named after the principal in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) was formed in high school by singer-songwriter Robert Schwartzman, whose list of celebrity connections is long: brother to actor Jason Schwartzman, cousin to actor Nic Cage and director Sofia Coppola, and nephew of Francis Ford Coppola. But it wasn’t just celebrity that turbocharged Rooney’s rise; songs like “Blueside,” “I’m Shakin’,” and “I’m a Terrible Person” blend power pop with British Invasion and punk influences to create a sort of rock and roll classicism in the best sense of the word. That’s why none other than Johnny Ramone selected them for the Ramones tribute album We’re a Happy Family, and why the band were tabbed to tour with such cult faves as Weezer, The Strokes, and The Donnas (they also appeared as themselves in the first season of The O.C.). That’s also why their 2003 self-titled debut (produced by Jimmy Iovine among others) sold a cool half million copies…but somehow it’s never been out on LP. Our Real Gone release of Rooney comes in gold vinyl housed inside a jacket with printed inner sleeve. Another one of those early aughts records that’s way, way overdue for wax.

Before Butch Walker produced and/or wrote for such huge acts as (gulp) Pink, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, Weezer, Green Day, Katy Perry, and (double gulp) Taylor Swift, he fronted the fondly-remembered power pop trio Marvelous 3. Hey!Album actually first came out as an independent release in 1998, but the band re-recorded almost half of it when they signed to Elektra, who released it in 1999. The extra TLC proved well worth it, as the record scored a hit with “Freak of the Week” and introduced Walker’s hooky and sardonically self-deprecating songwriting to the masses (it also landed Marvelous 3 fashion spreads for Abercrombie & Fitch and Calvin Klein…they were, as the saying goes, easy on the eyes). This Real Gone reissue marks the FIRST time Hey!Album is making it to music retail on vinyl, and for its debut we’re pressing it pretty in pink vinyl, with a printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics. A ‘90s classic!

Want a little history lesson along with your thrash metal? The 1989 release Heresy from the German band Paradox was a full-fledged concept album, commemorating the 13th century Albigensian Crusade that sought to eliminate the heretical Cathar sect. And truly, no foe could withstand the twin guitar attack, soaring harmonies, and machine-like rhythm section of this band. Other like-minded members of this particular metal horde include Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus, but really, Heresy is a one-of-a-kind record, and a hard act to follow, as this was the last release from Paradox for eleven years. For its U.S. vinyl debut, we’ve pressed up a limited edition of 1000 copies in dark gray “inquisitor’s robe” vinyl, which comes in an album jacket with inner sleeve featuring lyrics. Thinking man’s thrash!

Grab these while you can and get ready…something very, very big is coming your way next week!

This too! The original, anyway, haven't heard the bonus tracks:

In celebration of his legacy, Shimmy-Disc has announced a remixed and remastered reissue of Allen Ginsberg's 1989 album of spoken-word pieces, entitled The Lion For Real, Re-born.

This forthcoming release, due November 3, finds Allen Ginsberg — the voice of a generation, fierce, gentle, profound and profane — paired with music created especially for his work, by some of the guiding lights of Jazz in the modern era: Mark Bingham, Bill Frisell, Arto Lindsay, Marc Ribot, and others. All masterfully coordinated and produced by the mad scientist of collaborations, Hal Willner.

First released as The Lion For Real in 1989, this time capsule surges forth into the now with 8 additional tracks never included on the original release. These are timeless works, a garden of eden on vinyl to wander through repeatedly, guided by the founding father of Beat Poetry. Graced by an irresistible coda co-written with Shimmy-Disc founder Kramer, his lyrical mantra of "Don’t Grow Old."

Formed in London in 1969, High Tide featured the intense guitar playing of Tony Hill (formerly with The Misunderstood), the violin and keyboard skills of Simon House, bassist Peter Pavli and drummer Roger Hadden. The band was managed by Clearwater, also home to Hawkwind, Skin Alley and Cochise and were signed to Liberty Records soon after their formation. Their debut album, the stunning ‘Sea Shanties’ was recorded at Olympic studios and some of the heaviest gothic psychedelic rock record ever recorded. Issued in a striking sleeve designed by artist Paul Whitehead, the album is now regarded as a true classic of the era.

Their second album, ‘High Tide’, was recorded in 1970 and was another wonderful work. Despite their originality both critical acclaim and commercial success eluded the band and by the close of 1970 they had disbanded. Tony Hill would continue to plough his own musical furrow as one of Britain’s most original guitarists while Simon House would join the Third Ear Band before becoming a member of Hawkwind. Peter Pavli would go on to join author Michael Moorcock’s band Deep Fix.

Five decades on from their release, the two albums are now regarded by aficionados of this musical era as essential listening. ‘The Complete Liberty Recordings’ features both albums released on the label along with ten bonus tracks drawn from demos and studio out-takes from sessions in 1969 and 1970 and has been newly remastered from the original master tapes. The set features an illustrated booklet with an essay and a rare reproduction poster.

Superior Viaduct is putting out several early Milford Graves titles on LP in November: Bäbi and the two live albums with Don Pullen, Nommo and In Concert at Yale University. There's also a 2LP set that combines both the live albums (the same way Corbett vs Dempsey combined them on CD a couple of years ago). The disc of bonus material that was on CvsD's CD reissue of Bäbi is not part of this run, though.

From Sony Legacy:

Jimi Hendrix Experience: Hollywood Bowl August 18, 1967
Live at The Hollywood Bowl: August 18, 1967 has never before been released or bootlegged. It captures the Jimi Hendrix Experience at a unique moment in their illustrious career. Before a sold out audience of 17,000 people, the Experience overwhelmed an unsuspecting audience with a superb show that encompassed his renditions of songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters as well as signature songs such as “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary.” Out November 10th, the album is currently available for pre-order on CD, vinyl, and digitally.

Sorry not to get this in sooner. Omnivore is having one of their flash sales: albums by or featuring Peter Holsapple (ends tomorrow, the 28th)"
https://omnivorerecordings.com/holsapplesale/
The sessions with Chilton incl. a couple I'd want to keep, The Continental Drifters many more, as well it might, for inst with the Psycho Sisters. Vicki Petersen and Susan Cowsill, singing the best tracks. Also, despite not being a big seasonal music fan, I like a lot of The dB's & Friends' Christmas Time Again!, which has had tracks added several times over the years, and keeps getting better. Have not heard the PH Combo xmas alb, the solo, or duet set w Stamey.

Terry Adams & Steve Ferguson
Louisville Sluggers
Release date: May 12, 2023

Expanded reissue of the 2006 release from co-founders of NRBQ
In 1966, Terry Adams and Steve Ferguson, two musicians from Louisville, Kentucky, formed the New Rhythm And Blues Quartet after playing together in earlier bands. From the release of their 1969, self-titled debut, NRBQ became not only one of the greatest genre-defying bands on the planet, but also a band whose live shows were as unpredictable as they were unparalleled in the joy they brought their audiences. Although Ferguson left the band in 1971, he was never far away—periodically showing up at gigs (much to the delight of fans), and playing with Adams on various releases keeping their musical friendship alive and well.

The pair got together in the mid 2000s to re-explore that kinship. They brought along NRBQ drummer Tom Ardolino, Terry’s brother Donn (of The Whole Wheat Horns, whose work is prevalent on many NRBQ releases), and some other friends. Donn says in the album’s liner notes, “No outside producers. No time constraints. No budget influences. Just Terry and Steve and friends.”

Louisville Sluggers appeared in 2006 to the delight of the NRBQ faithful. In addition to originals from both Adams and Ferguson, the friends also explored the music they loved: Thelonious Monk, Jimmie Rodgers, Louis Armstrong, Hank Williams, and more. No matter the writer or influence, Louisville Sluggers was totally inventive, and a whole lot of fun.

Now, Louisville Sluggers returns, with updated artwork (retaining Donn Adams original liner notes) and four previously unissued bonus tracks including recordings of “Turkey In The Straw” and Allen Toussaint’s “Java.” This reissue expands the wonder and merriment of Louisville Sluggers for the new and old generations of fans of NRBQ and beyond.

my fave single album of Omnivore's ongoing NRBQ series is groovy speculative rowdy backyard Louisville s/t debut, finally reissued in 2018:

The return of their classic debut album!
The New Rhythm And Blues Quintet formed over 50 years ago, and after playing together for a few years, the band began recording with Eddie Kramer and inked a two-record deal with Columbia Records. Their eponymous debut appeared on shelves in 1969, featuring the band’s wide-ranging originals peppered with versions of songs from artists as wide-ranging as Eddie Cochran and Sun Ra, plus a co-write between the band’s Terry Adams and Jazz experimentalist Carla Bely. It was, and is, a wildly original and influential release.

For all of its stature, it’s hard to believe in its 49-year existence, it has never been reissued, nor ever appeared on CD or Digital. That changes in March when NRBQ is available once again, on CD (for the first time), Digital, and as a gatefold LP. Combining elements of the original, with additional photos and new liner notes from Jay Berman, the package has never looked, nor sounded better.

The band is still going strong, and this reissue follows hot on the heels of their 5-CD boxed set, High Noon – A 50-Year Retrospective, and last year’s critically acclaimed EP, Happy Talk.

That 5-disc retrospective also holds up, for the most part.

10CD or 10LP box: The Complete Obscure Records Collection

** Limited Collector Edition of 1.000 copies. Includes hand-numbered certificate, 10 LPs in faithful replicas of the original covers and polylined inner sleeves, a 80-page LP-sized book in English, all housed in a custom lavish linen box. ** In a very special Soundohm exclusive, we’re thrilled to announce pre-orders for the first ever box set gathering the entire ten album collection of Brian Eno’s Obscure Records, originally issued between 1975 and 1978. Containing the debut releases of Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, John Adams, David Toop, Max Eastley, Harold Budd, Christopher Hobbs, Jan Steele, and Simon Jeffes / The Penguin Café Orchestra, in addition to important works by John Cage, Tom Phillips, and John White, not to mention Eno’s seminal “Discreet Music”, the label’s output collectively amounts to a monument in the history of minimalist experimental music that has captivated audiences since it first appeared - a rare bridge between the avant-garde and popular realms. This remarkable collection, coming as a deluxe box set designed by Bruno Stucchi / dinamomilano, and issued by Dialogo in CD and vinyl editions completely remastered by Andrea Marutti - both including a book filled with rare photos, archival material and texts by, among others, Gavin Bryars, Bradford Bailey, David Toop, Max Eastley, Richard Bernas, and Tom Recchion - marks the first time this seminal series has received a complete repress on any format, with a number of the albums within having never been reissued on vinyl and/or CD since their original release. You can't get any better than this, simply a dream come true.

Mighty tempting... I have seven of those albums in one form or another already; it was one of those collector impulses that eventually subsided. Still haven't heard Machine Music, Ensemble Pieces or Voices and Instruments.

Hmmm. Probably not.

one month passes...

Three early '80s Henry Threadgill albums — 1982's When Was That?, 1983's Just The Facts And Pass The Bucket, and 1985's Subject To Change, have popped up on Bandcamp, which is notable because Subject To Change was only ever available on LP. The other two were reissued on CD at one point but have been out of print for decades. You can get them all at https://about-time-records.bandcamp.com/ along with some other great records by trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah, percussionist Jerome Cooper, Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, and others.

Anyone hear the new Brinsley Schwarz box set? It's basically a reissue that collects all of their albums, remastered with bonus tracks. (The old CD's were really hit-or-miss in the mastering department, so I'm hoping these are done right.)
