Morrissey only supports white vegan trans people

ydkb (gyac), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 20:17 (two years ago)

Again, Morrissey played a very long game at canceling himself. Seemed to ramp up considerably with the For Britain stuff, though

perhaps a Glasgow label can snap her up now

why would any label in Glasgow want to snap her up?

I now can’t stop imagining Fred walking up to a tied-up RM and saying “Let’s see who Róisín Murphy really is!” and pulling off a mask as the entire Scooby gang yells “MORRISSEY?!?!????”

The NME piece on this notes that the (ex) banjo guy from Mumford & Sons has defended her words so maybe all is not lost for her

NickB, Wednesday, 30 August 2023 21:20 (two years ago)

Fred: Let’s see who Róisín Murphy really is!

Scooby Gang: Gasp!MORRISSEY?!?!????

Morrissey: Argh!

Fred: Why did you do it?

Morrissey: We hate it when our friends become successful!

It’d be good to see Jessie Ware take down/re-edit the recent “Freak Me Now” remix video.

New board description??

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 30 August 2023 23:39 (two years ago)

I think the US vs UK divide on this comes down to size, basically. The US isn't one country, like the name suggests it's basically 50 countries, and about half of them are governed by theocratic fascists or people who want to be and will be if given half a chance, but the other half aren't. And the US media is a patchwork, too, there's foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing media (mostly online) pushing a just-this-side-of-mob-violence anti-trans message but there's also trans defenders and people pushing back against that right-wing tide, and everyone's kind of siloed, reading and cheering for what they believe and occasionally hate-reading the other side. Whereas England is a little island with like 5 newspapers, all of which seem to have collectively adopted this frankly bizarre "the trans-es, they're coming to get us!" message, like people in a tiny rural village convinced that monsters are coming up the road, except the village is fucking London.

― read-only (unperson), Saturday, 26 August 2023 18:01 (five days ago) bookmarkflaglink

I’m very late but England is not an island. I’d also say the UK is not one country in a more concrete sense than the US because it is made up of four countries. I know it sounds pedantic but I feel like these things matter.

houdini said, Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:17 (two years ago)

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is an island country in Northwestern Europe, off the north-western coast of the continental mainland.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:24 (two years ago)

The United Kingdom is not England.

houdini said, Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:25 (two years ago)

I know, neither is the US “America” but it’s a shorthand that many people utilize.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:27 (two years ago)

Sorry, this isn’t what this thread is for but England is not an acceptable shorthand for a country containing Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Those many people are wrong - that’s fine, but it’s not an argument.

houdini said, Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:35 (two years ago)

We say UK because it’s easier to say than Old England

hardcore technician gimmicks are also another popular choice f (President Keyes), Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:46 (two years ago)

imo calling the UK a country is fine, but using England to mean UK is not

jaymc, Thursday, 31 August 2023 00:49 (two years ago)

yeah no problem with calling the UK a country. was just saying that it is a country made up of other countries in relation to the point about the US differing to the UK because of its makeup.

Hope she enjoys her new fans. Good grief. Acted like we didn’t exist when we played before her in a queer space this winter so I figured something was up.

lol "new fans" remember when Ariel Pink went on Tucker after Jan. 6 and people were saying he's gonna have a bunch of alt-right fanboys now?

frogbs, Thursday, 31 August 2023 01:14 (two years ago)

I remember he got an iTunes bump and I was delighted to think of Fox News gramps listening to "Butt-House Blondies" for the first time

Indeed, was very disappointed that “The Ballad of Bobby Pyn” didn’t become de facto walk-on music at MAGA rallies.

henry s, Thursday, 31 August 2023 01:46 (two years ago)

Not promoting a record but still releasing it (they say they proceeds are being donated), and the artist is already getting free press from all the headlines about this in most major publications. Not the huge win some of you are making it out to be. https://t.co/0YITe9pO8J

— Niko Stratis (@nikostratis) August 30, 2023

I don't know the first thing about running a label but them outright cancelling the release would be catastrophic for themselves, no? esp for what was supposed to be a major release

Murgatroid, Thursday, 31 August 2023 01:50 (two years ago)

why would any label in Glasgow want to snap her up?

suspect this was a specific reference to the transphobic current drummer of a formerly-major-label pop/rock act, who has a long-running indie label of his own — not the city’s music scene in general

vashti funyuns (sic), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:01 (two years ago)

Every independent label is on the brink of catastrophe at all times. Records don't sell, period, and you're desperately counting on any press that might conceivably move a couple of hundred copies. This is gonna be a huge kick in the balls for Ninja Tune.

read-only (unperson), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:12 (two years ago)

ariel pink already had a bunch of alt-right fanboys, he just didn't make any new fans out of republicans who weren't already 4chan nazis and his career is pretty much dead. checking in on what he's been up to: haphazardly releasing music exclusively to his substack subscribers including a song with winston marshall

i hope murphy keeps to her word to shut up about her views and doesn't release an embarrassing garbage album about being cancelled or anything. i suspect the number of her fans who back her wrt this is far fewer than pink's anyway

ufo, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:15 (two years ago)

xp yeah but my question is basically how worse would it be for them if they cancelled the release entirely

Murgatroid, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:18 (two years ago)

xxp Right. I wonder what the "proceeds" from the last one even were, and how long it took to make it into the black

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:19 (two years ago)

xo Taking them at their word, $0 vs -$advertising/recording spend. kind of a lot.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:20 (two years ago)

With the yachting traction the story has got the past few days, they have to be thinking this mightn't break even.

sorry for swiping. no yachting. nite.

god, i've had to play that game far too many times. "am i reading way too much into this awkward social interaction or has this person decided i'm a groomer?" it fucking _sucks_.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:29 (two years ago)

the claim that ninja tune are donating proceeds isn't in the article, just the journalist's twitter post, so idk what the deal is there

if they are donating proceeds that's a decent way to handle it, i don't really blame them for not cancelling a release at the last minute like this idk

ufo, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:37 (two years ago)

suspect this was a specific reference to the transphobic current drummer of a formerly-major-label pop/rock act, who has a long-running indie label of his own

oh i would have thought numbers would be a better fit as far as glasgow labels run by a transphobe (in part at least) than the teenage fanclub drummer's label

ufo, Thursday, 31 August 2023 02:52 (two years ago)

The album comes out in a week. CDs and vinyl records are already made, packaged, and shipped. "Cancelling" it is impossible. This isn't the 80s where a label can just eat that kind of expenditure.

It's in the article. But you'd be forgiven for thinking that the article ended with the line at the top.

the transphobic current drummer of a formerly-major-label pop/rock act, who has a long-running indie label of his own

this blind item has my curiosity piqued

boxedjoy, Thursday, 31 August 2023 06:01 (two years ago)

already answered in the thread. idk anything about the principals of Numbers tho, which would be a better IRL fit than what I assumed was a snarky joke!

vashti funyuns (sic), Thursday, 31 August 2023 06:20 (two years ago)

Right. I wonder what the "proceeds" from the last one even were, and how long it took to make it into the black

a club-based album from a great live performer that came out during extended closures of clubs and concerts venues is not rly a great test case of the artist’s viability. but note that she didn’t make it to a second album there, and has moved to a label without corporate backing.

vashti funyuns (sic), Thursday, 31 August 2023 06:24 (two years ago)

she only had a one album deal for roisin machine, though it does seem to have charted a little better than the rest of her solo career. but she's still a rather niche artist, to most people moloko are nothing more than two-hit wonders from two decades ago?

idk anything about the principals of Numbers tho

jackmaster (numbers co-founder, no idea how involved he is in running it these days) said a bunch of transphobic shit on facebook many years ago (despite having sophie on the label!)

"Cancelling" it is impossible. This isn't the 80s where a label can just eat that kind of expenditure.

yeah exactly, which is why i'm not bothered.

ufo, Thursday, 31 August 2023 07:19 (two years ago)

Also probably there'd be legal issues given the 'allowable' reasons for cancelling a release are often pretty specifically included in contracts (ie the quality of the recordings being too shit to release, etc). This'll hit Ninja Tune hard enough without them being taken to court over it.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Thursday, 31 August 2023 08:19 (two years ago)

They couldn’t cancel the LP release (assume there is no contractual get-out apart from ‘bringing NT into disrepute’ that would apply in this case) so cancelling all the press/plugging, pulling the advertising and marketing is what’s left over and totally cancellable (my guess is NT was silent while considering what action could legally be taken). That’s a lot, still! A few items might’ve already gone to print but online might be paying out kill fees to journalists if pieces filed/lined up don’t then get published.
