I had a dream the other day that Dave Matthews Band played a show locally on a college campus, and a local, far-right conservative group leaked to a paper something really horrible and hateful that DM supposedly said, suggesting he was more of an ally to their causes, and they ran it. I'd witnessed the exchange and was calling the student paper to ask for a retraction, when Dave himself showed up on campus and threatened to beat all of their fucking asses with his guitar.

It's a song about a depressed person that ends with her still depressed, and everyone is just loving it.

and I suppose the dancing people suit the music. The music already clashes with the lyrics. On the album, the songwriter and subject are trapped in a terrible dmb machine. In the show, the dancing audience are ghouls that beg the grotesque machine into motion. "We want to dance to the circus music about the lady who wants to die, dave!"

Dave Matthews coulda easily wound up being a fuckin Ted Nugent type but he grew up in South Africa during apartheid, which, despite being on the privileged side of him, probably informed his politics significantly.

Athens, GA had its own DMB cover band that would sell out the Georgia Theater every weekend for $25 bucks a seat

i suppose at a certain point the DMB frat guys of the 90s grew up & mellowed into the wine-drinking attorneys and finance guys of the 2000s

the late-high school and college-era DMB fans I encountered in the late 90s/early 00s were stereotypically the pukka shell necklace-wearing fraternity-type guys and the hippieish-adjacent women. not jam band enough to be restricted to jam band fans, not too soft rock to alienate others
