and then you say but scott why do you have to pick one horse why not pick more than one horse and i say nope you only get one horse. and i choose to move forward and as much as i love the home truths and mother and the fireplace and the pot of beans over the fire and ovaltine and mended socks darned with a darning egg and dusty hippies i go onward and upward. just like kurtis mantronik did. just like all jamaican/arab-americans raised in canada and new york did.

oh i'm already waiting for tarfumes to show up with a good anecdote about the time that miles and can and donna summer were at george clinton's house and they all listened to The Band and made fun of Steve Miller.

scott seward, Friday, 11 August 2023 17:10 (two years ago)

but then you ask scott why are you listening to Swedish rock bands from 1967 if you want to go forward???? but that's the thing Mecki Mark Men are STILL moving forward on that record as we speak. in a different timestream to be sure but they are still evolving past their roots of river wolves and beaver stew and taking off into a dark cold void unimaginable. its all in their manifesto:

scott seward, Friday, 11 August 2023 17:13 (two years ago)

Scandi manifestos probably best avoided

Kate is extremely entertaining in this thread.

Anyway

it can sometimes be confusing to refer to an album called 'the band' by the band called 'the band'

Wait till you hear about Big Country

Bonobo Vox (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 11 August 2023 17:29 (two years ago)

ha well, at least they are a band and not an actual country

when i think of nashville skyline coming out the same year (and on the same planet!) as in the court of the crimson king i realize what horse i ride into the 70s. it isn't the dusty one. it's the shiny robo-horse. i'm actually riding it with Can and Donna Summer and George Clinton. it's a big horse! (and hey go check out that dusty dusty him sad 70s west coast thread i like a LOT of country rock...)

Haroumi Hosono switched horses midstream. Or did he reveal that it was actually all the same horse?

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 11 August 2023 18:09 (two years ago)

it's always the same horse to be real

you're a sick man, Buddy Rich (Noodle Vague), Friday, 11 August 2023 18:11 (two years ago)

the horse with a thousand faces

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 11 August 2023 18:17 (two years ago)

Only saw the last post, figured it was some kind of Notorious Byrd Brothers joke.

Is this a reference to Levon's substance problems at that gig?

i would have preferred the Small Faces backing Dylan up in the 60s.

I am absolutely on board with this. I mean, not instead of The Band, but in addition to, like if Dylan had also toured in ‘67-‘68.

As it happened, Ian McLagan was in Dylan’s 1984 road band. During the first show, McLagan was scrambling: songs were in different keys than they’d rehearsed, and Bob played a bunch of songs they hadn’t rehearsed. After a couple more shows, McLagan found Bob in the hotel bar and made some setlist suggestions. Bob said, “Hm, that’s a good idea. You know, why don’t you write those down for me.” So Ian made a list of songs he thought would work and gave it to Bob. For the rest of the tour, none of those songs were played.

Sorry, all I can do is reiterate that Miles was a Who fan, and insisted that “I Can See For Miles” be played over the PA at his ‘70s concerts just before the performance started.

omg totally sharing this with maria.

scott seward, Friday, 11 August 2023 21:06 (two years ago)

that is so cool about miles and i can see for miles. very funny too! miles was so funny. he was the original internet troll too. i love those interviews where someone will ask him who else he likes on trumpet and he would just say that he liked al hirt. you know that had to burn up all the serious bop trumpet dudes. though miles did call him a white uncle tom as well. even in a compliment he had to bash you!

(and al hirt was no joke as a player don't get me wrong, but still...)

scott seward, Friday, 11 August 2023 21:11 (two years ago)

reminds me of Dylan extemporizing on Jimmy Buffett’s songwriting prowess in an RS interview 10 years or so ago

brimstead, Friday, 11 August 2023 21:16 (two years ago)

the real reason 1973 is the birth of rap? the release of "Bad Bad Leroy Brown". Truth! Best top ten gangsta rap single of all time.

x-post - dylan is totally the folk miles davis. they have that same ability to stagger people with a compliment.

Many XPs Little Feat and the Doobie Brothers are alot closer than you'd think.

Robert Forster did that too when I interviewed him in 2006. He meant it, though.

I might be on board for a Buffett listening thread. I'm impressed on the rare occasions I encounter his deeper '70s tracks.

I bet Dylan meant it too tbh

Dylan apparently went thru a period where was was obsessed w/Beck (Hansen, not Jeff)... so, no shade on Beck (or Buffett), but it's totally not unreasonable to think he was sincerely praising Buffett.

Nonhuman biologics enthusiast (morrisp), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:36 (two years ago)

He loved Gordon Lightfoot, so why not

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:40 (two years ago)

it was way more refreshing to hear him say Buffett than the Avett brothers or some shit

How do we know you aren’t in fact Maria logged on as Skot?

The Original Human Breadbox (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:44 (two years ago)

The Miles/“Miles” thing was in a book by his former road manager, whose title escapes me at the moment, and which is not good.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:44 (two years ago)

ha! now you're really bringing me back.

pretty sure that matos thing was her single favorite ilx moment.

I wish there had been a period where Dylan was obsessed with Hanson.

"So Queen, when you talk about the greatest bands ever… I would never say anyone is greater than The Beatles, but there's an argument right now that Queen, because of their ability to transcend stadiums, there's an argument that they are more relevant today than the Beatles are."

Obv Mr Lillywhite has somehow missed Hey Jude getting played at sporting events over here.

Not really that controversial in the UK or outside North America generally.

Here's my controversial opinion

Queen aren't good

a (waterface), Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:40 (two years ago)

that's a pretty common olde-ilx view. i always felt like there was more american queen love than brit queen love. kinda like my heroes bauhaus.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:42 (two years ago)

for years i felt like queen should get more credit for everything that they did but it might start going a little overboard now. that movie definitely did something.

scott seward, Wednesday, 16 August 2023 18:43 (two years ago)

(by u.s./u.k. love i meant here but maybe in the wider world too...? they were so huge here when they were huge. gods really.)
