I mean, we used to joke back in 1997/8 that Big Ten universities must have issued DMB posters with the dorm rooms.

in Athens, GA around '99 there was a DMB cover band that would sell out the Georgia Theater charging $25 a ticket. the singer did the kermit voice and everything. they prob made a small fortune.

even when i was in college in reno there was a popular, obviously-former dmb cover band and their name was even the same construction (“[guy’s name] band”) and they were fucking godawful, no escape

to say nothing of how an open mic night i frequented was haunted by a guy who always covered “halloween”

this all makes me think of the band Virginia Coalition

i wasn’t that bothered by it bc it’s one of the dave songs i still really like, gremlin voice and all

drummer in my high school band was a fan of the stuff with Tim Reynolds. He would listen to that stuff in his truck with the treble cranked up so you could really feel those acoustic stabs

I used to see Tim play with Cosmology back in the 80s

1st time I got real stoned was at B0yd the violin player's apartment, again prob 7-8 years before the band formed

I've long had a theory that much of the affection that, like, basic-ass people who have attitudes about music and culture that ILMniks would look down on have for DMB might be a grade school or early high school immersion in Graceland…like, these folks went to dead shows in the late 80s/early 90s, liked to party, and were not going to be concerned with Paul Simon's cavalier attitude towards credit, or the consequences of a UN boycott, would not be interested in listening to township jive and african music but have a dopey reverence for "the 60s"…

saw dmb at two separate bridge school benefit concerts in the late 90s, gotta be honest i could not get into it and pretty much zoned out the whole time. dave and neil played “cortez the killer” together, but it was not very killer to me

I had a dream the other day that Dave Matthews Band played a show locally on a college campus, and a local, far-right conservative group leaked to a paper something really horrible and hateful that DM supposedly said, suggesting he was more of an ally to their causes, and they ran it. I'd witnessed the exchange and was calling the student paper to ask for a retraction, when Dave himself showed up on campus and threatened to beat all of their fucking asses with his guitar.

It's a song about a depressed person that ends with her still depressed, and everyone is just loving it.

and I suppose the dancing people suit the music. The music already clashes with the lyrics. On the album, the songwriter and subject are trapped in a terrible dmb machine. In the show, the dancing audience are ghouls that beg the grotesque machine into motion. "We want to dance to the circus music about the lady who wants to die, dave!"
