Hey, and "the guy sings like a Muppet" is hardly a criticism.

So does Neil Young - Kermit

Jerry (Jerry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ask the people who select the music they listen to by the type of audience it appeals to.

You're really hung up on that, aren't you.

Dave Matthews Band is halfway between...

I'd say they're in some hellish middle-ground between Manheim Steamroller, Jimmy Buffett and Kansas.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, and "the guy sings like a Muppet" is hardly a criticism.

So does Neil Young - Kermit

I don't remember ever saying I liked Neil Young.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, you guys started it.

allison, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I believe "John McAteer" started it.

J (Jay), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes Sir...

Taking Sides: Momus Vs Dave Matthews Band

Rambo, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate the dave matthews band because their bassist's dad is a really unreliable guitar tech. he had my guitar for 4 months and didn't fix it.

brains (cerybut), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Well now...there's yet another well-founded rationale. I applaud you for being so profound and equitable in your reasoning.

Stay tuned folks...Allison's brain is once again on the brink of destruction.

Allison, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 02:02 (twenty-three years ago)

::yawn:::

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

and in the sequel he sings "I've seen a million coochies/ and I've rocked them all."

This shouldnt've been ignored.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well now...there's yet another well-founded rationale. I applaud you for being so profound and equitable in your reasoning.
Allison...is there a single answer in the universe that you *would* accept as perfectly legitimate?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I think Allison should become an ILX regular.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

"Gooba Gabba, Gooba Gabba, We Accept You, We Accept You!
Gooba Gabba, Gooba Gabba, One of Us, One of Us!"

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Ahh...see, that's what you get when you don't pay attention. If you look back, you'll notice that the question in question has already been questioned =P

Allison, Thursday, 19 June 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

You all need to get LIVES. John Mayer sucks 100% and Dave Matthews Band is a group who are a lot more talented then other bands out there. I just wanted to tell you haters out there to get a life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are all fake and all of you out there all. We are all from something else. You all who hate DMB don't even know what you are talking about. Your proboly a bunch of non comformists who conform yes I mean you goth people and whatever else you all are. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!

Margaret Smith, Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm...I believe that comment cancelled out everything I said about the majority of their fans not being half retarded. Er...thanks.

Allison, Saturday, 28 June 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Allison, you officially rock.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 28 June 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, they just kinda suck, don't they ? Jocks should really be content to strum Doors' shit in their dorm rooms, go through flitting Jim Morrison infatuations the first couple of weeks after they first get bent, and be good paying customers at Ben Harper gigs.

TripVanJangle (TripVanJangle), Saturday, 28 June 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

here we are again at square 1!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 28 June 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

*sigh* that we are...

Allison, Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not even a very interesting square!

Cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

More a trapezoid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Trapezoids are way cooler than squares.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

What if it was a self-consciously dorky trapezoid?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

a rhombus then

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Parallelograms roxx u r all obtuse angles.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

the word 'rhombus' also has that world music feel so it fits perfectly

which brings me to the question of course that is always at the forefront of my dmb thought process (when i'm not thinking about the ways 'crash' encapsulates everything that is wrong with white middle class universities in the states) -- is dave matthews the fault of 'in your eyes'?

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

er...crash the song, or crash the album?

allison, Sunday, 29 June 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Matthews owes more to Phil Collins, I think, than Peter Gabriel

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

u hataz gotta drop da hate u get me? ther is lots of diffrent types of music out there if u dont like sumthing den y not just ignore it insted of hatin. the best thing about music is dere is loads of types of diffrent music n u jus gotta find da 1 dat u like best instead of jus wastin time hatin an ting u get me? nuff time dave matthews band r messy but dey aint really my ting u get me? but i aint gonna go on a internet message board n be all like hatin an ting when dere is obviously lots of peeps who r feelin dave matthews n tink he is grimy u should jus respect dat an drop da hate u get me? at least he is makin music off his butt an ting an not jus hatin which is more than u lots have dun innit. xXxladyfirexXx

LaDy FiRe, Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

i meant crash the song, specifically the 'hike up your skirt a little more' line.

and lady fire -- you know if it was POSSIBLE to ignore dave matthews more than i already do, i would. and how do you know what i do with my spare time anyway.

maura (maura), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:44 (twenty-three years ago)

u hataz gotta drop da hate u get me?

Lady Fire, the prince of peace.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 June 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

We've already discussed the hike up your skirt line. It's a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics that weren't written to be interpreted as degrating to women. Actually, the song is about the worship of women (as a lot of their songs are) and those who can't understand that it wasn't intended to be ill-mannered, but really just the opposite, are blowing it WAY out of proportion.

I'm confused..is "grimy" and "messy" a good thing?

Allison, Sunday, 29 June 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

is putting women on a pedestal and putting women in the gutter the same thing?

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 29 June 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Putting women on a pedestal is better because then you can look up their dress 'n shit.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 29 June 2003 23:38 (twenty-three years ago)

is "grimy" and "messy" a good thing?

Have you ever seen mudwrestling? It's the bomb!

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 29 June 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

that's the beauty of 'beauty' allison -- it's in the eye of the beholder. and this beholder's eye, which is also admittedly way too distracted to catch up on 800-plus (!!!) posts while she's at work, sees your 'beautiful lyrics' as ones that were written by the ham-hock hand of one of those coffeehouse singers, you know, the really sensitive ones who love to sing ooh baby baby you are so lovely through the thick-smoke haze but whose outlook on life is, let's face it, much more attuned to the male gaze as filtered through the girls gone wild (hey man they're just showing their INNER BEAUTY!!) lens

maura (maura), Monday, 30 June 2003 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Matthews Band is the best band ever. Their music is the best there is. DMB is full of musical talent and Dave himself is the sexiest man alive!!!

Kara Kilduff, Monday, 30 June 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

ah, the sunkissedtulips of my youth.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

you're just not funny

oops (Oops), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

haha you lived to zing another day there didn't you

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Matthews Band is the best band ever.

No they're not.

Their music is the best there is.

False in a manner that defies all semblance of language.

DMB is full of musical talent

If so, they do a fabulous job of suppressing it.

....and Dave himself is the sexiest man alive!!!

Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Shh! That's not really too beneficial to my argument, Kara. Hehe...heh...ahem. Folks, please desreguard all DMB entusiast's statements. They know not what they do.

Honestly, he's not that kind of "macho man around the guys, ladies man in public" kind of person. You don't have to believe me, but I think the wholesome validity he has is near impossible to fake. His outlook on life is much more pious and emotive than one might think someone in his position would have.
I'm going to assume you're a woman. That said, you can understand that a LOT of men are what you described above (putting on a nice little "sensitive male" front to get what they want) but unbeknownst to them...it's obvious and we can figure it out. I can't commit to memory any instances in which he seemed less than sincere than what his lyrics convey him as.
I really believe that he is genuinely writing his feelings, and I'm sure that if he thought a woman would take offense to those lyrics and get turned off to his music that he would have at least restructured the song.

Allison, Monday, 30 June 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Couldn't you just have responded "Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you," to each point, Alex?

Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Couldn't you just have responded "Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you," to each point, Alex?

*insert laughing Jaz-jester here*

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Couldn't you just have responded "Clearly a matter of opinion, but not an opinion I happen to share with you," to each point, Alex?

Well, no. Kara expressed those sentiments as absolutes, so I decided to respond in kind. That DMB is NOT the greatest band ever isn't just my opinion, it's a hard, cold, carved-in-stone F A C T. As to whether he's sexy or not, that more of a gray area. I don't find him sexy, but then you might.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Just like to say that I, for one, would rather consume an oversized, puss-filled, pickled aardvark testicle than take note of a certain person in NYC. He may be full of great musical insight, but if so, he does a fabulous job of suppressing it.
