There's still no consensus on whether those Unknown Deutschland records are authentic products of the 70s or 90s pastiches. My thought is that, at minimum, there was overdubbing and remixing done to older tapes. In more than 25 years, no-one has come up with a single copy of the supposed "original LPs" that were supposedly pressed at the time.
I have one of the Virgin CDs, and the track by Fuerrote is a worthy atmospheric guitar-feedback Amon Düül II type exercise.

I had volume 1 and I remember it being pretty unlistenable

Experimental Electronic and Acoustic Soundscapes 1961 - 88

Brand new edition of this Soul Jazz Records long out-of-print classic album available now as a new limited-edition one-off pressing triple yellow vinyl album (plus download code), and limited-edition one-off pressing special yellow CD edition.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Soul Jazz Records’ Space, Energy and Light is a collection of music by early electronic and synthesizer pioneers (from the 1960s through the 1970s), mid-1970s proto-new age gurus and 1980s guerrilla D-I-Y cassette-era electronic artists, spanning in total over a near 30-year time frame. All of these artists used electronic advancements in music technology as a means of exploring not only space and the idea of the future, but also of looking inwards to the soul and of creating music in harmony with the natural world.

From computer software and hardware experimentalists and sound pioneers such as Laurie Spiegel and Kevin Braheny, as well as Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company – the first synthesizer ensemble created in collaboration with Robert Moog – through to musique concrète experimentation, the album shows how technological advancements and creative artistic expression often went hand in hand.

In the mid-1970s artists Steven Halpern and Iaxos were instrumental in creating proto-new age music, experimenting in both the healing properties of sound and its relationship with the natural world. These artists also pioneered a new self-contained and underground D-I-Y approach to music, creating their own record labels, forming new distribution networks (with albums sold in meditation centres, health food stores and ashrams) far away from the commercialism of the mainstream music industry. In the early 1980s after the revolution of punk, these D-I-Y attitudes and ideas appeared once more in the growth of the distinctly anti-commercial and underground cassette-only careers of artists such as Germany’s Stratis and Carl Matthews in Britain.

Artwork includes some of the earliest photography of the Plieades star cluster dating from the 1880s.

REVIEWS

"Listening to Space, Energy & Light in one sitting is a bit like experiencing constellations exploding within constellations inside your brain." Record Collector

"Incredible collection of spacey electronics and meditative soundscapes dating from the early 60s to the late 80s here, lovingly assembled by the Soul Jazz team. This compilation has it all if you like your music deep. Big names such as Iasos and Laurie Spiegel feature, but even if you think yourself a bit of a nerd in this field, there are some lesser known pearls to be found." Bleep

"Quite simply an amazing mix of some quite bizarre and interesting pieces of music, no way to describe it other than to buy it, put on some headphones and drift off to inner space". Music

"New compilation charting almost three decades of experimental electronic and synthesizer music from the most influential and often unsung composers of their generation. Beginning and 1961 and following the story until 1988, Space, Energy and Light connects proto-new age gurus and DIY tape vigilantes who were equally inspired by the advancements of new technology and its potential to unlock utopian futures in both the music and the soul." Punk 45: The Singles Cover Art of Punk 1976-80
Edited by Jon Savage and Stuart Baker with a new introduction by Bobbie Gillespie
SOUL JAZZ BOOKS

rand new edition of Soul Jazz Records’ massive deluxe 400-page Punk 45s cover art book edited and compiled by Jon Savage (author of the seminal book on punk, England’s Dreaming) and Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records).

This new edition comes with a new introduction from Bobbie Gillespie, founder of Primal Scream (who has recently also published his memoirs Tenement Kid).

Contributors include Peter Saville, Richard Hell, Richard H Kirk, Seymour Stein, Geoff Travis, Martin Moscrop, Glenn Branca, Jamie Reid, Dave Robinson, Roger Armstrong, Martin Mills, Gee Vaucher, Savage Pencil, Dennis Morris and more.

This book is a revelatory guide to hundreds and hundreds of original 7” record cover sleeve designs – visual artefacts found at the heart of the most radical and anarchistic musical movement of the 20th century.

As well as the encyclopaedic visual imagery featured inside, the book also includes interviews with a number of significant figures in punk music: artists and groups including Richard Hell, Martin Moscrop (A Certain Ratio), Richard H Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire), Glenn Branca and David Thomas (Pere Ubu); record label owners including Seymour Stein (Sire Records), Geoff Travis (Rough Trade), Roger Armstrong (Chiswick), Martin Mills (Beggars Banquet), Dave Robinson (Stiff Records), David Brown (Dangerhouse); and the celebrated designers involved in creating punk’s original iconic imagery – Peter Saville (Factory Records), Gee Vaucher (Crass Records), Jamie Reid (Sex Pistols), Gee Vaucher (Crass Records) and Dennis Morris (Public Image Limited).

The revolutionary do-it-yourself ethic of punk was applied to the aesthetic of design as much as it was to music, and record sleeves acted as lo-fi signifiers of anarchy, style, fashion, politics and more with an urban and suburban invective courtesy of the 1000s of new bands - punk, post-punk, pre-punk, nearly-punk and more - that emerged at the end of the 1970s.

This book is an exhaustive, thorough and exciting celebration of the stunning artwork of punk music – everything from the most celebrated and iconic designs through to the stark beauty of the cheapest do-it-yourself lo-fi obscurities.

Early Independent Hip Hop, Electro and Disco Rap 1979 - 83
SOUL JAZZ RECORDS

https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/img/bDNuN243TlZKb2J1d2RIY1dYUkF5UT09/sjrlp530d-yo-boombox-sleeve-sticker.jpg

o! Boombox is the new instalment of Soul Jazz Records’ Boombox series on the early days of hip-hop on vinyl and features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of early rap and disco rap records made in the USA in the period 1979-83.

The album includes the first releases of seminal groups such as Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and The Funky Four Plus One through to a host of rarities and little-known obscurities such as the Carver Area High School band’s ‘Get Live 83’, an awesome record made at a Chicago high school.

The album is released as a deluxe triple LP complete with 3x full inner sleeves of extensive sleeve notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. There is also a very-limited one-pressing indies-only special deluxe version that comes with an extra bonus super-rare 7” single of ‘Magic’s Rap’ by Magic’s Trick, aka ex-marine Magic Fraga, a record that was only ever available on US military bases! The album also comes as a deluxe double CD pack with 30-page booklet and slipcase.

Yo! Boombox also features the stunning photography of Sophie Bramly one of a very select group of photographers (alongside Henry Chalfant, Martha Cooper, and Joe Conzo) who were allowed full access to document the exciting early days of hip-hop in New York.

These first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, party-on-the-block rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that first took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. Where the first DJs - Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa - were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache or Babe Ruth’s The Mexican, these first pre-sampling rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes. As Chic’s ‘Good Times’ was to ‘Rappers’ Delight’, the songs here feature then-current dancefloor hits such as the Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’, Cheryl Lynn’s ‘To Be Real’, MFSB’s ‘Love Is the Message’ while MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique new sound. In fact, the links between disco and rap date back earlier to the ‘party style’ MCing of figures such as the legendary DJ Hollywood or radio DJs like Frankie Crocker.

Zappa was joined in the studio by former Mothers member Ian Underwood (keyboard, saxophone, rhythm guitar), violinist and vocalist Don “Sugarcane” Harris, Wrecking Crew bassist Max Bennett and English drummer Aynsley Dunbar. With Frank also behind the board in the producer role, the five-piece rolled through new originals, interesting cover choices and free-flowing jams. “Largely instrumental, these recordings showcased the guitarist’s virtuosity, while offering what could have easily been the sequel to Hot Rats, had it ever been released,” noted press materials announcing the compilation.

Frank Zappa did pick his favorite takes and mixed the tracks for potential release before mothballing the project. Joe Travers and Ahmet Zappa chose those 11 cuts as the basis of Funky Nothingness. A three-disc expanded deluxe edition adds two discs of outtakes, alternate edits, unedited masters of songs from the era, studio jams and “other bonus nothingness.”

Funky Nothingness has been previewed with the previously unreleased track “Work With Me Annie/Annie Had A Baby.” The medley pairs covers of two Hank Ballard & The Midnighters’ 1954 hits: the Ballard-penned “Work With Me Annie” and its answer song, “Annie Had A Baby,” written by Henry Glover and Sydney Nathan. Don “Sugarcane” Harris provides vocals. Listen to the medley below:

To help introduce the project, today, Kramer shares his collaboration with Britta Phillips, "Nocturne," alongside an accompanying music video.

"'Nocturne' is a song possessed of deeply personal origins that must remain hidden. But I can illuminate the fictional parameters of its emotional birthplace, as follows, if you can imagine along with me…you have fallen in Love with a woman who is in Love with someone else. That 'someone else' then leaves her, and despite your desire to be the one who can now finally be near her, to hold her, to comfort her, you just can’t bear the thought of her being alone. And if she finds someone else, someone other than you, that’s good enough. So long as she’s no longer alone. It’s your knowing that she’s lonely that’s killing you, and as long as SOMEONE is there for her, at night, you know you’ll both be fine. That’s a Nocturne. And that’s Love."

Nocturnes (w/ Britta Phillips)
Psalms (w/ David Grubbs)
Preludes (w/ Eerie Wanda)
Elegies (w/ Jad Fair & Danielson)
Laments (w/ Paul Leary)
Hymns (by Rob Crow)

from Numero:

Back In Stock: Current - Yesterday's Tomorrow Is Not Today
In case you missed this the first go around last fall. We've restocked the in-demand hardcore piece.

Screaming suburban blues straight from the pages of HeartattaCk magazine, Current exploded out of the early-’90s Midwestern emo scene in a fit of D.C. hardcore-inspired rage. Spread across three LPs, Yesterday’s Tomorrow Is Not Today compiles the quartet’s lone album, two EPs, split 7"s with Indian Summer and Chino Horde, miscellaneous compilation debris, and nine previously unissued alternates, including the infamous KLXU radio show. Remixed and mastered from the original tapes, Current’s complete discography is annotated in Leor Galil’s exhaustive survey, illustrated with period photos, flyers, and cut-n-paste sleeve art across 24 pages.

Pre-Order: Helene Smith - I Am Controlled By Your Love.
Teenage melancholy from the original Miami Sound Machine. Backed by the infamous FAMU Marching 100 Band and Frank Williams’s crack shot players The Rocketeers, I Am Controlled By Your Love compiles sides from Helene Smith’s ’60s tenure with the Deep City, Lloyd, Reid, and Blue Star labels. A sweltering album of 12 deeply soulful, alternate universe hits from the First Lady of Miami Soul.

I recently found a couple boxes of the Eula Cooper LP so throwing up a bundle option available while supplies last. All 3 are necessary.

Helene Smith - I Am Controlled By Your Love
Barbara Stant - My Mind Holds On To Yesterday
Eula Cooper - Let Our Love Grow Higher

Expected to ship early May.

Trey Gruber - Herculean House Of Cards
A tortured songwriter and struggling addict who jolted the tired Chicago DIY scene with his own brand of primal despair, Trey Gruber and his band Parent were on track to join the ranks of Twin Peaks, Mild High Club, and Whitney. His death in 2017 at the age of 26 brought it all to a halt. In his final years Trey wrote and recorded hundreds of previously unheard demos, dandelions in the cracked concrete of 21st century disconnect, an alphabet’s worth of which have been compiled by his family and friends for his only album: Herculean House Of Cards.

one month passes...

"In a world insatiable for glitz, the music of Daniel Johnston reminds us that the human heart could really give a shit about all that. What it wants is a kind of robust humility, an integrity of purpose, and the love apparent in an artist that puts the all of their humble soul into their work. It’s beautiful in that way, and it’s rare."
- StereoEmbers
On February 10, Shimmy-Disc shared the first-time vinyl release of I Killed The Monster, an 11-track compilation of songs written by the celebrated American music legend, Daniel Johnston, whose classic LPs 1990 and Artistic Vice were produced by Kramer — the former at his legendary Noise New York recording studio and the latter at Daniel's home in West Virginia — and released on Shimmy-Disc in 1990 and 1991, respectively.

The compilation, originally shared as a CD-only release in 2006, features standout performances of Johnston classic by some of indie music's greatest talents, including: Danielson & Sufjan Stevens, Kimya Dawson, Dot Allison, Mike Watt, Jad Fair & Kramer, Jeffrey Lewis, LUMBEROB, R. Stevie Moore, and more. Kramer produced and mixed most of the songs on the LP, and he himself delivers one of the most startling tracks on this release, Daniel's great masterpiece, "Bloody Rainbow."

All of the songs included on the compilation were re-mastered by Kramer in 2022, and will be available on vinyl for the very first time, and on a limited edition cassette, which will also feature an additional 10 tracks (for a total of 21), from the original 2006 CD-only release.

To celebrate the recent release, today, Shimmy-Disc has shared a brand new video* for the track "Blue Skies Will Haunt You From Now On" by The Electric Ghosts (Daniel Johnston & Jack Medicine + Kramer). The video was directed by Nicholas Baranek.

David Bowie / Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture 50th anniversary edition
“The last reissue we’ll ever do…”
BY PAUL SINCLAIR

The ‘Motion Picture Soundtrack’ to David Bowie’s last gig as Ziggy Stardust will be reissued for the 50th anniversary in July.

Bowie retired his alter-ego on 3 July 1973, at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, and the show was filmed by D.A. Pennebaker who captured the evening’s events, including Bowie’s famous speech just before the final encore, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide’, where he revealed that he was retiring the Ziggy Stardust persona. The announcement shocked and surprised everyone, including members of his own band!

The film and the audio recording were mothballed for a decade as Bowie was keen to leave Ziggy behind, but once he left RCA for EMI in 1982 the label (RCA) were free to release it without worrying about was David did or didn’t want to do, and that’s exactly what happened in 1983. Suspecting this would happen, Tony Visconti and Bowie mixed the audio in 1981 so they at least had some input on how it would sound when released.

t took almost another decade for this live album to be released on CD, when Rykodisc issued it towards the end of their Sound + Vision reissue campaign of the early Nineties. Unlike most of Ryko’s other Bowie reissues, there were no bonus tracks.

Ten years after that EMI released what was then a 30th anniversary 2CD set, with audio newly mixed by Visconti. The concert film was also issued on DVD with a 5.1 surround sound mix.

For this new 50th anniversary reissue, the soundtrack has been newly remastered and finally includes the medley of ‘The Jean Genie/Love Me Do’ and ‘Round And Round’ featuring Jeff Beck. These additions have been newly mixed by Tony Visconti. The film has also been digitally restored by D.A.’s son, Frazer Pennebaker and will be issued on blu-ray and will be shown at over 1000 cinemas worldwide during July 2023.

Black Editions Group is reissuing the third High Rise album, Dispersion, as a 2LP set, fully remastered and sounding amazing, with two bonus tracks. You can pre-order it on Bandcamp here.

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1497304560_10.jpg

From the moment they emerged in the early days of the 80’s Tokyo underground, High Rise set themselves apart as radical outliers, shattering the limits of rock and psychedelic music with a ferocity unmatched even in that heady era. The group’s core duo of Asahito Nanjo on bass/vocals and Munehiro Narita on guitar had an explosive chemistry; they mutated, distorted, amplified the raw velocity, heaviness, and electricity of late 60’s / early 70’s rock into an entirely new, monstrous form. Running in similar circles, their approach paralleled that of Les Rallizes Dénudés, but with a more garage / proto-punk attack and the blistering intensity of a full-on amphetamine rush. While Mizutani’s guitar is what took Rallizes’s to another level, the same can be said for Narita’s guitar work in High Rise- rightfully placing him in the pantheon of psychedelic guitarists and for some to call him “the undisputed king of the motorcycle fuzz guitar”.

The band inspired the launch of the legendary P.S.F. label, giving it its first two releases which along with its third release, the debut of Keiji Haino’s Fushitsusha, signaled a new era in the world of Japanese undergound music. High Rise’s second album, 1986’s II, was a triumph and fully lived up to the group’s original “Psychedelic Speed Freaks” moniker, instantly raising the stakes for any band to follow. It carved out a new stream of rock music, rooted in an encyclopedic knowledge of the music’s history and an almost metaphysical understanding of its raw elements and spirit.

High Rise’s third album, 1992’s Dispersion, kept the group’s in-the-red intensity while pushing into new directions. Less grounded in speed, Nanjo along with drummer Dr. Euro build powerful, dynamic riffs that swing with crushing levels of heaviness. Slower pieces rife with blues infused tension appear alongside dissonant no wave inflected passages and rumbling biker rave-ups. All of which provide Narita with the room to create one of rock guitars most compelling high wire spectacles. Throughout the album he creates dizzying torrents of notes with a precision, control and endless inventiveness that crackles with chaotic energy. As P.S.F.’s own description proclaimed at the time “Munehiro Narita's guitar explodes!” this is “Killer-Fuzz-Wah-Wah psychedelic heaven!” Dispersion is “a masterpiece that should be a classic for all psychedelic speed freaks.”

Black Editions is pleased to present the definitive edition of Dispersion, remixed and remastered from the original master tapes by Asahito Nanjo and released in a deluxe gatefold double LP edition housed in a die-cut slipcase printed entirely with spot colors and featuring spot UV gloss and soft touch finishes.

From Real Gone:

We search for real gone releases in all genres, but 1995’s Chronicle of Two Losers by Ill Biskits is one of the real gonest! This lost classic from the Golden Age of Hip Hop barely even saw a legit issue before being deleted, which explains why even CD copies go for triple figures (this is its first authorized release on LP). Ill Biskits was a one-and-done, German-born, Virginia-based duo composed of Deeda and Kleph Dollaz (R.I.P.) whose undeniable abilities on the mic and introspective, deep rhymes were mixed into hypnotic beats courtesy of D.I.T.C. producer superstars Buckwild and Lord Finesse. This album captures hip hop really coming of age as an art form; Chronicle of Two Losers has lyrical and sonic layers that unfold with repeated spins. Highly, highly recommended…so grab our coke bottle clear vinyl pressing while you can. It’s limited to 1000 copies, and includes an inner sleeve displaying the original CD booklet’s dreamy artwork.

Is this good??

MOUNT WITTENBERG ORCA
EXPANDED EDITION NOW STREAMING
ON ALL DIGITAL SERVICES

The expanded reissue of the collaborative mini-album between Dirty Projectors and Björk, Mount Wittenberg Orca, which was initially released on vinyl for Record Store Day in April, is now streaming on all digital services.

" 'Mount Wittenberg Orca' might be my favorite thing from this chapter of Dirty Projectors. It feels like sort of a dark horse in the catalog. which I guess is kinda funny, considering it’s a collaborative record with Björk. We were overwhelmed with the hype around the band at the time and purposely under-messaged it. But I love these songs. And as a basically live-in-studio album, it’s the only official release that shows how this lineup really cooked as a band. The performances and engineering hold up really well. And of course Björk elevates us to a different level of protean majesty. I remember being spontaneously in tears during her vocal takes for “Sharing Orb.” I’m also excited to share the original Housing Works show, in its raw beauty, as well as the writing tapes and rehearsals that show how the whole thing came together. Thanks for listening."

D.O.A. ANNOUNCE "WAR ON 45" 40th ANNIVERSARY RE-ISSUE

LIMITED EDITION RED VINYL 500 COPIES ONLY

INCLUDES 12 PAGE WAR ON 45 BOOKLET and

7 BONUS TRACKS WITH CHUCK BISCUITS

n 1982, D.O.A. was ready to record a new album on the heels of their first two alums: Something Better Change and Hardcore 81, which are still both musical landmarks to this day. But their legendary line up had changed, as Randy Rampage was ousted from the band.

The older brother of Chuck Biscuits, Dimwit, stepped in on bass with Chuck still on drums, Joey Shithead on vocals and guitar and Dave Gregg on guitar. While this line up only lasted for 3 months, D.O.A. traveled to L.A. and recorded demos at Mystic Studios. Eventually Chuck quit, Dimwit took over on drums, and Wimpy Roy became the bassist.

So as a grand way of celebrating the 40th Anniversary of War on 45, which many a critic and fan hailed as one of the most innovative albums of it's time and on a par, quality wise with their first two albums, the band decided to add some bonus material.

First off, Sudden Death Records has included a 12 page booklet of unique photos, posters and an extensive history of D.O.A. at that time,. written by Canada's Godfather of punk Joey Shithead. In addition, they put all 8 tracks from the War on 45 1982 release onto Side A of the album and the 7 tracks from the pre War on 45 demos that were recorded at Mystic onto Side B. So you have the Montgomery brothers: Biscuits and Dimwit, two of the greatest drummers of all time (and not just punk rock, any kind of rock music) on the same LP.

ABOUT D.O.A.

D.O.A. was formed amidst a whirlwind of controversy and upheaval. In 1978, three guys fresh out of high school from the backwaters of Canada's suburbs heard about the punk rock revolution. In February of that same year the band formed and started playing shows. They soon realized that there were no record deals coming in any time soon.

Keithley (aka Joey Shithead) who was working towards being a civil rights lawyer before he found punk rock, concluded that the band had to take the "do it yourself" approach long before DIY became a popular concept. He formed a fledging record label called Sudden Death Records and the label released D.O.A.'s first snarling slab of vinyl, the Disco Sucks 7" EP.

Disco Sucks soon became an underground hit and the band started touring from Vancouver to their newly adopted "home base" of California five to six times a year. In 1980, Keithley coined the term "hardcore" and the band soon released their landmark album Hardcore 81. The album became a hit, the hardcore movement took off, and D.O.A. pushed that expression into common vernacular.

Over the last four decades, D.O.A. have released 18 studio albums, sold over a million albums, and played 4,500 shows on five different continents. The band's albums, shows, and attitude have won over three generations of fans and influenced the likes of Green Day, Nirvana, Offspring, Henry Rollins, David Grohl and The Red Hot Chilli peppers, to name a few. Keithley has also written two books: I Shithead: A Life in Punk and TALK - ACTION = 0.

From day one, D.O.A. has helped organize and lead hundreds of benefit concerts and protests for good and just causes like environmental issues, women's rights, food bank benefits, First Nations rights and they have organized and stood against war, racism and weapons proliferation, amongst others.

Joey Shithead Keithley - Environmentalist, activist politician, D.O.A. founder, writer and troublemaker

Keithley has been called a cultural politician, trying to change the world from outside the system. Well my friends, Joe got elected in October 2018 as a city councillor in his home town of Burnaby (one of the largest cities on the west coast of Canada). Joe ran as a Green and is now changing the system from the inside. He has worked to provide affordable housing, helping the disadvantaged. In other words, changing the system from the inside. Noted film maker Scott Crawford (Salad Days and Boy Howdy) is documenting Joe's journey through politics and music, with a release of the film in 2022, the year when Keithley will be running for re-election.

Many have compared Joe to a modern day Woody Guthrie and he is always looking for a way to push "grassroots democracy" and like his idols Woody and Pete Seeger, he and the band won't give up.

So that in a few words is D.O.A. When they take their wild, unbridled show live show on the road, it's a must see, because this is one of the last real punk rock bands that still gets out there and kicks ass and still tells it like it is. It's always an atmosphere of chaos, veering out of control, but somehow, at the last minute, D.O.A., manages to reign all of it back in. And in an indescribable way, you are not quite the same afterwards.

Hardcore 91 wins CBC Polaris Prize as one of Canada's greatest albums of all time

D.O.A.'s seminal album Hardcore 81 was recently names as one of Canada's all-time great musical accomplishments. Hardcore 81 was the searing piece of vinyl that influenced generations of musicians and spear headed the hardcore movement. In November 2019 the CBC Polaris awards named it as one of the best (punk rock fans knew this all along anyways! Lol) beating the likes of Sarah McLaughlin, The Band, KD Laing and other notable artists.

TIME TO FIGHT BACK AND CHANGE THIS WORLD
TALK - ACTION = 0

For me personally, I have been waiting around 40 years to hear some of this stuff...and some of it I didn't know existed (they re-recorded "Naked Eye" in 1971?!). The handful of tracks from the San Francisco show that I've heard are among my favorite recordings of anything by anyone ever.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 18 July 2023 13:52 (two years ago)

Tarfumes, if you search for the comics artist/writer David Hine on Facebook you will see him sharing lots of tasty photos of this box (David wrote the graphic novel that's part of the package). Apparently Townsend is a bit of a comics fan - and the comics writer Peter Hogan worked at Eel Pie Publishing for a while (Peter tells a hair-raising story about Vivian Stanshall pulling a knife on him at the premiere of Sir Henry at Rawlinson's End).

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 18 July 2023 18:35 (two years ago)

Wow, thanks for the tip! Just checked out the photos -- very interested to read the whole thing.

I remember the graphic novel was announced at least a year ago, maybe two, and had an entry on Amazon and everything. I wondered why it disappeared, but maybe Townshend decided it would work best as part of this box rather than as a standalone item.

Trumpeter Woody Shaw's 1971 debut, Blackstone Legacy, getting reissued. It's a double LP with a total running time of 82 minutes, so it's never been on CD in full form — two tracks have between a minute and 90 seconds shaved off. I'm hoping there will be a download option.

Yeah, I have the 1999 Contemporary CD version of that and it shaves a little off of both "Lost and Found" and "New World".

That's the same CD I have, and I've never bothered to seek out or download a vinyl rip. I assume I'm probably missing some rhythm section vamping and/or a bass solo.

Today, Shimmy-Disc announces their forthcoming posthumous reissue of Bruce Haack's 1974 record, Captain Entropy, to arrive on August 25.

Captain Entropy, described as "a participation journey for elementary and high-school people — through the soul of space-ship earth — from principles of thermodynamics to folks like the American eagle," was created and totally performed by Bruce Haack. It's an electro-surrealist musical journey from the mind of "The Captain," capturing his inventive genius musically in tandem with tapping into the voice of his inner child. It displays innovative story-songs inspired by Haack's diverse musical interests and a love of Science and explorations of the Natural World, songs to excite the imaginations of listeners, both young and old.

This forthcoming reissue of Captain Entropy was remastered by Kramer for this Archival Reissue. The free digital download that comes alongside purchase of the vinyl also contains an exclusive additional 20 minutes of previously unreleased bonus material. The LP was originally released in 1974 on Dimension 5, the artist’s own label. This new reissue will be on limited edition hand-numbered Black Vinyl (limited to 555 copies), and on Clear Vinyl LP for Retail.

Captain Entropy - TRACKLISTING

SIDE 1:
01. Captain Entropy
02. Army Ants in Your Pants
03. Music
04. Mallangong

SIDE 2:
01. The Universal Unicycle Show (pedal it)
02. Walking Eagle
03. The American Eagle
04. Metric Conversion
05. Catfish

To introduce the new reissue, today, Shimmy-Disc unveils the record's first cut, Bruce Haack's "Music." The narrative-song teaches about 'a beautiful soundwave language,' merging science and history in sound, his musical crystallization of abstract thoughts into concrete feelings. It describes humans creating 'magic switching systems that change the shape of soundwaves.' Haack's vision was always of the future, where 'music is made by just thinking about it.'

In the original 1974 liner notes, Haack described the track as such: "An early soul-beat plus electronic 'strings' gives a space-capsule insight into where music is really at. Believe it or not, people used to scrape strands of animal tissue with hair from a horse's tail to make it."

As Kramer wrote on the forthcoming reissue and this new cut:

"Captain Entropy is not simply a brilliant work of art and a pioneering ingredient in the history of electronic music. It’s also a unique ‘kids’ record and the ideal introduction to Haack’s work for
listeners previously unaware of his extraordinary creations. Like Fred Rogers, everyone loves
Bruce Haack. His spirit is universal, and his musical output is as wide and as far-reaching as
Creation itself.

Haack's work had always focused on tinkering, inventing, innovating, and creating, but at its very core, everything he has done, from start to finish, is about music, with a prime focus on how music can teach, inform, illuminate, and explain what life and what being alive is all about. His connection to kids - and in helping them to understand how the world works - couldn’t be more clearly articulated than it is in Ryan Hover's video for 'MUSIC', premiering today. Bruce Haack truly cared about kids, about community, about culture, and about everything he saw and felt around him. The entire world was his home.

Haack was the consummate musician, but he was a composer first and foremost, and Shimmy-Disc is proud to partner with his estate in spreading the word about the sounds and visions of his life's work. This reissue LP is only the beginning. Captain Entropy is no ‘novelty’ release made solely for kids. This record, like everything else Bruce Haack ever created, is for Everyone."

Little Richard: The Complete Atlantic & Reprise Singles LP
$ 26.99

ittle Richard’s one-of-a-kind career veered wildly from the sacred to the profane, but everything he did was profound; he was one of the greatest gospel AND rock and roll singers of all time. And you can scale the dizzying heights of both sides of the man’s mountainous talent on this 15-track collection, which brings his Atlantic and Reprise singles back to vinyl, almost all for the first time since they originally came out on 45s. Richard recorded and self-produced the Atlantic material in 1962 and leased it to the label for release the following year, right before his return to rock and roll with two triumphant UK tours. Only “Crying in the Chapel” has seen reissue since; the other three tracks (esp. the uptempo gospel numbers “Hole in the Wall” and “Travelin’ Shoes”) hit that glorious balance between spiritual fervor and emotional frenzy that only he could pull off. The Reprise material dates from 1970 to 1972 and was helmed by famed Specialty producer Bumps Blackwell as well as by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Quincy Jones (“Money Is” from the soundtrack to The Heist), with musical contributions by legendary Richard sidemen Lee Allen and Earl Palmer as well as folks like Travis Wammack. The non-LP side “Shake a Hand (If You Can)” is the rarity, but tracks like “Freedom Blues,” its B-side “Dewdrop Inn,” and “Mockinbird Sally” testify that Richard’s brilliance remained unabated. Mastered, like many of our Real Gone singles collections, by Aaron Kannowski, The Complete Atlantic & Reprise Singles features liner notes by Little Richard expert Bill Dahl, and comes in ruby red vinyl. A timely release to go along with the new Little Richard documentary!*

Hamza El Din: Al Oud (Limited Clear Vinyl Edition) LP Regular Version

It’s fair to say that what Ravi Shankar did for the sitar, Hamza El Din did for the oud (the short-necked Arabian lute): bringing a little-known instrument to the attention of the West and popularizing it. Indeed, he ended up playing oud with everybody from the Grateful Dead to the Kronos Quartet to his one-time roommate Sandy Bull. But El Din’s gifts went beyond that of an oud virtuoso; he was also an accomplished singer and composer, and you will hear all of those talents on full display on this seminal album, released on Vanguard in 1965 soon after his star-making appearance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival that attracted the attention of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Meditative, mesmerizing, and haunting, Al Oud features nine original compositions based on Nubian folk traditions; at first it’s the exotic sound of the oud that draws you in, but it’s the rhythmic pulse of the music and the expressive quality of El Din’s voice that keeps you riveted. Our first-ever American LP reissue of this classic record comes in a clear vinyl pressing limited to 900 copies, complete with original artwork featuring liner notes by Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, at the time Sudan’s Ambassador to the United Nations. A richly rewarding listen.

Deutsche Grammophon has reissued their Avant-Garde Series of LPs (1968-71) as a 21CD box.

Various Artists The Avantgarde Series
Release on: 08/18/2023
The legendary DG Avantgarde vinyl series (1968-1971) is turning 55! In order to celebrate this occasion, the series is now released on 21 CDs for the first time. The Avantgarde series serves as a historical document for a time of radical change in musical thinking and the breaking of artistic boundaries. The question "What is music?" confronted many of the composers and musicians involved in the series, and the anti-authoritarian spirit of the 1960s and 1970s was a palpable influence. Deutsche Grammophon's Avantgarde Series reflects all the currents that thus arose, without aesthetic demarcations and across genres and instrumentations: large orchestral works stand alongside chamber music and solo forms, electronic music and improvisations.

The edition is presented in its original colourful designs by renowned graphic designer Holger Matthies, accompanied by a 186-page booklet with original commentaries (available in English & German) by composers and experts as well as photos of the artists from the DG archive.

Highlights include canon works by György Ligeti such as his choral work "Lux aeterna," Luciano Berio's "Sequenza V" with Vinko Globokar on trombone, a simultaneous recording of three works by John Cage, and some groundbreaking and monumental electronic works such as Luigi Nono's "Contrappunto dialettico alla mente" and Leo Küpper's "Automatismes sonores."

More about the xpost original 1977 LP:

For those of you who already know this record, you’ll be surprised to learn its origin story. It was born out of a misunderstanding between him and the India Navigation producer Bob Cummins, and was recorded when he was at a crossroads in his career with a group so unlikely they were all never in the same room again. Among them was the guitarist Tisziji Muõz, who was in the process of becoming a spiritual guru, the organist Clifton “Jiggs” Chase, who would go on to co-write and produce “The Message,” and a classically trained pianist—his wife at the time, Bedria Sanders—who played the harmonium despite never having seen one. At times ambient and serene, at others funky and modal, Pharoah radically departed from his earlier work. And it became beloved. (You can read a little bit more about it on the site Pitchfork.)
We were working with Pharoah on this project last fall when he unexpectedly passed away. At first, it was hard to know what to do. We loved him, and the reason you do all of this is not solely for the music, but also for the person who made it. It’s their personality, their humor, and their wishes that drive you forward. So, we decided to go deep into the research. We set out to create something that showed Pharoah and his music in a new light.

Over the next few months, we’re going to share with you all the amazing things we found, many of which are the result of the extensive research we did throughout Europe and North America to support this release. We’re calling it The Harvest Time Project, and it will be based on his website at PharoahSanders.com/HarvestTime.

There, we’ll share the insights made by a dedicated research team, including essays by Harmony Holiday, Marcus J. Moore, and Pierre Crépon—whose writing appears in the box set—among many others. You can sign up to get updates.
As part of this, we’re also very excited to announce the live show The Harvest Time Project: A Tribute to Pharoah Sanders, a bespoke concert series featuring the original guitarist Tisziji Muñoz and a selection of different musical ensembles who will come together in different iterations to reinterpret the composition “Harvest Time.” Each performance will diverge from each other as much as Pharoah’s own wildly different performances.

The world premiere will take place at Le Guess Who? (Nov 12), featuring Irreversible Entanglements, Domenico Lancellotti, and special guest Tisziji Muñoz, under the musical direction of Joshua Abrams. And a special workshop performance will take place at National Sawdust (Oct 14), in honor of Pharoah's birthday.

In some ways, these live concerts will be a reflection of what Pharoah was able to achieve in the live versions of “Harvest Time,” which you find in this box set. Performed during a short but intense European tour that he took in the summer of ’77, they turn the original piece on its head.

Whether this album is new to you—or whether you’ve got a bootleg (or even an original) at home—Pharoah will never sound the same.

Love,

Luaka Bop

There's a Chick Corea box coming out in November (on streaming services now): The Chick Corea Elektric Band: Complete Studio Recordings 86-91. Five LPs/CDs of the most garish, tasteless, fuzoid splatter you'll ever hear in your life. I'm tempted to review them just for horrified laughs.

Our next release, “I’ll Show You How” by the Cinnamon Soulettes is by far one of the most beautiful love songs we’ve ever heard. Close to no information is available about it other than it was published and released in the 1970s as a private press through the late legendary Seattle producer Kearney Barton. Unfortunately, most information the estate had was lost in a flood and none of the collectors and music historians from the PNW area we contacted, nor the University of Washington State who inherited a large part of Barton’s tape collection knew anything about the band or its mysterious songwriter “L. Leavy”. We are still searching for the band, anyone who knows anything, give us a shout! Mrs./Mr. Leavy, where are you..?

“MEAT JOY were the DIY jewel of the Austin weirdo punk scene of the early 80’s—essential, uncategorizable, and entirely insane.” -Steve Shelley, SONIC YOUTH (US, 2022)

from Bandcamp: Meat Joy was difficult to categorize. They were a leaderless collective. Often
improvisational, they moved fluidly among many genres seeking joy and truth. Their sound was alternately queer and straight, dark and funny, heartfelt and biting. Loud soft fast slow beautiful ugly music, sometimes all in the same song.

Out October 13th, listen to "Another Pair" now:

10CD or 10LP box: The Complete Obscure Records Collection

** Limited Collector Edition of 1.000 copies. Includes hand-numbered certificate, 10 LPs in faithful replicas of the original covers and polylined inner sleeves, a 80-page LP-sized book in English, all housed in a custom lavish linen box. ** In a very special Soundohm exclusive, we’re thrilled to announce pre-orders for the first ever box set gathering the entire ten album collection of Brian Eno’s Obscure Records, originally issued between 1975 and 1978. Containing the debut releases of Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman, John Adams, David Toop, Max Eastley, Harold Budd, Christopher Hobbs, Jan Steele, and Simon Jeffes / The Penguin Café Orchestra, in addition to important works by John Cage, Tom Phillips, and John White, not to mention Eno’s seminal “Discreet Music”, the label’s output collectively amounts to a monument in the history of minimalist experimental music that has captivated audiences since it first appeared - a rare bridge between the avant-garde and popular realms. This remarkable collection, coming as a deluxe box set designed by Bruno Stucchi / dinamomilano, and issued by Dialogo in CD and vinyl editions completely remastered by Andrea Marutti - both including a book filled with rare photos, archival material and texts by, among others, Gavin Bryars, Bradford Bailey, David Toop, Max Eastley, Richard Bernas, and Tom Recchion - marks the first time this seminal series has received a complete repress on any format, with a number of the albums within having never been reissued on vinyl and/or CD since their original release. You can't get any better than this, simply a dream come true.

Mighty tempting... I have seven of those albums in one form or another already; it was one of those collector impulses that eventually subsided. Still haven't heard Machine Music, Ensemble Pieces or Voices and Instruments.

Think that the vinyl version comes with downloads?

Hmmm. Probably not.

one month passes...

Three early '80s Henry Threadgill albums — 1982's When Was That?, 1983's Just The Facts And Pass The Bucket, and 1985's Subject To Change, have popped up on Bandcamp, which is notable because Subject To Change was only ever available on LP. The other two were reissued on CD at one point but have been out of print for decades. You can get them all at https://about-time-records.bandcamp.com/ along with some other great records by trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah, percussionist Jerome Cooper, Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, and others.

Anyone hear the new Brinsley Schwarz box set? It's basically a reissue that collects all of their albums, remastered with bonus tracks. (The old CD's were really hit-or-miss in the mastering department, so I'm hoping these are done right.)
